THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Looks Set To Debut With Godly $300 Million At The Worldwide Box Office

Thor: Love and Thunder has already started rolling out in some theaters, and the latest box office projections point to the blockbuster earning as much as $300 million worldwide during its opening weekend.

Over the Fourth of July weekend, Minions: The Rise of Gru vastly exceeded expectations with a massive $125 million opening weekend (following projections of an $80 million debut). Now, Deadline reports that Thor: Love and Thunder is taking aim at an electrifying $140 million - $160 million haul in North America and $150 million overseas.

This puts the Thor: Ragnarok sequel on track to debut globally with a massive $300 million!

Back in 2017, Ragnarok opened domestically with $122.7 million, going on to ultimately earn $854 million worldwide. Whether Thor: Love and Thunder can top that number remains to be seen, especially with reviews that aren't quite as glowing as its predecessor.

As of right now, the blockbuster has 71% on Rotten Tomatoes, a far cry from Thor: Ragnarok's 93% "Certified Fresh" score. It's a long way from being deemed Rotten, of course, but it will still be interesting to see what fans make of the movie when it starts rolling out into theaters starting Thursday.

It's worth noting that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness scored 74%, but very nearly topped $1 billion. With that in mind, we're not expecting Thor: Love and Thunder to underperform. It is, however, pacing behind the Doctor Strange sequel, likely because there was so much anticipation for that movie in the wake of Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home

"In some ways, Thor: Love and Thunder feels like Ragnarok redux," reads the current Critics Consensus for Thor: Love and Thunder on Rotten Tomatoes, "but overall, it offers enough fast-paced fun to make this a worthy addition to the MCU."

Check out a newly revealed poster for the movie below:

The movie finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.

Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi, the movie stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Russell Crowe, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, and Sean Gunn among others.

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be released in theaters on July 8, 2022.

Five hours to go. I start feeling slightly nervous about the movie...

I enjoy movies so much more when I keep my expectations way down. Especially marvel and star wars because they're close to my heart. Anyone expecting more than a cartoon out of this will have some amount of disappointment I think

@ProfessorWhy - well, when the lead actor comes out and says it's like it was made by a 7 year old....that tells me all I need to know about it.

Complete and utter trash

could see it coming below expectations since it sounds like a bit of a dud, and minions just broke out pretty big. not to mention top gun seemingly refusing to have any big week-to-week drops.

Lol. It's not going to come anywhere near that number. It'll be lucky to do $150 million on opening weekend. This movie is going to flop so hard.

@Toblakai - It's not because you want it to fail that it will. That's not how it works. I assume you know that right?

@Toblakai - You're saying it'll be lucky to do 150 million worldwide?

Well it won't make a billion.

Shame though, if DS2 and Thor 4 would have reviewed amazingly and was top quality, the movies would have made a billion easily, closer to 1.5B. Hopefully this is a nice wake up call for Marvel to prioritize quality over quantity because lately it's just quantity.

@Typhoon20 - MoM had a worse GA reception than Dominion.
Is not about reviews, is about general audiences getting tired of the genre.
And the fact that MCU movies hasnt been that good since Endgame.

@TheHumanSpider2 - No Way Home proves that people aren't tired of rhe genre....they're tired of woke garbage being peddled and forced into everything.

See the success of Top Gun and Minions and the disastrous failure of Lightyear and other films for clarification.

@Urubrodi - I actually think it's going to exceed that number. Doctor Strange MoM did $187M, more than double what it made in the first film, and Thor is far more popular and has a much more kid friendly movie (and Hemsworth will draw a female crowd as well). Ragnarok did roughly $123M opening weekend. I think it does well over $150M and even pushes towards $200M.

Not sure where these estimates are from, but Disney tends to lowball their opening weekend estimates.

@thewanderer - Dr Strange 2016 was promoted as a, well, Dr Strange movie, this was promoted as an event movie, with Profesor X in the trailers, it was promoted as the sequel to NWH.
Now people like to pretend they never expected anything big from the movie, but they expected Superior Iron Man, Tobey's Spiderman, Nic Cage's Ghost Rider, and the Illuminati playing a big role.
