THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER's Rotten Tomatoes Score Has Been Revealed! THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER's Rotten Tomatoes Score Has Been Revealed!

The review embargo for Thor: Love and Thunder has lifted, and that means we have an all-important Rotten Tomatoes score! How does the God of Thunder's latest adventure stack up to past efforts? Well...

UPDATE at 12.30pm ET/9.30am PT: Thor: Love and Thunder's Rotten Tomatoes score has now dipped to 68% based on 97 reviews.

You may not like Rotten Tomatoes, but its importance cannot be underestimated. These days, a "Fresh" or "Rotten" score can be pivotal to a movie's success, and a dreaded green splat can ruin its chances of making an impact at the box office.

There's a good reason studios have started using a "Certified Fresh" rating as a badge of honour on social media and in TV spots, but will Thor: Love and Thunder ultimately be among them? It's looking good for the Marvel Studios movie, but based on the first 57 reviews, it's not the critical darling Thor: Ragnarok was back in 2017.

As of right now - and this score will definitely change over the next few days - Thor: Love and Thunder sits at 74%. We don't have a "Critics Consensus" yet, though you can find a spoiler-free selection of review excerpts by clicking here

For comparison, Thor: Ragnarok has 93%, Thor: The Dark World sits at 66%, and the movie that started the God of Thunder's journey in the MCU, Thor, is scored at 77%. That currently leaves Thor: Love and Thunder right between the 2011 movie and its sequel, so it should be interesting to see where it stands by the weekend.

Either way, it sounds like a fun ride, and it will ultimately be down to the fans to decide whether this direction is one they want to see Thor continue to head in.

The movie finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor.

Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi, the movie stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Russell Crowe, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, and Sean Gunn among others.

Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be released in theaters on July 8, 2022.

Not promising.

@DrReedRichards - That's true. I think even Dr Strange MoM had a higher rating in it's first few days.

But lets be fair the critic score isn't where it's at, it's the audience rating.

@UniqNo - I will always trust critics over an audience score as I'm not on that anti-intellectualism BS.

@Magus -

It's almost the very definition of arrogance, to watch certain folks hail their own personal opinions as infallible and somehow greater than that of people who do this for a living and have actually studied the subject at hand.

UniqNo - 7/5/2022, 12:19 PM
@Magus - I hear you. But for me, there's been countless movies on there rated rotten that I've quite thoroughly enjoyed, and movie's that are highly rated by critics that I found to be quite bad, but to be fair there's often ones I agree with.. so neither here nor there.

Edit:

Though for me I was always skeptical on another Tiaka entry. I got Batman and Robin Vibes after they let Schumacher go nuts after the success of Batman Forever. I may wait for it on Disney+

@DrReedRichards - Im Sure based on these critics today, If they had Changed Thor for Love and Thunder to a Female POC and kept everything the same they would have given it 100%

@UniqNo - eh idk. Audience rating is even worse, with no requirements to actually see the movie and rotten tomatoes just deciding your review was too harmful and deleting it. Not to mention both sides can just bombard it with reviews.

@DrReedRichards - While I agree to an extent, I think there's a balance that needs to be hit between utterly dismissing critical consensus and hailing it as gospel.

There are plenty of films for which discourse has shifted with time, either to greater appreciation/acclaim or to take films down a peg as flaws are more widely recognized.

Even setting aside the matter or time, critics are not a monolith. You can have two equally experienced, studied critics who completely disagree with each other. This is still a subjective matter in which taste and personal biases come into play. A critic isn't necessarily bad, wrong, or a contrarian because their assessment is in the minority. By that same token, a non-critic isn't necessarily wrong for disagreeing with critical consensus.

That said, I do trust critic scores more than audience scores, especially in this era of review bombing. And I agree that when taken to the extreme of assuming your own opinion's infallibility and utterly dismissing opposing viewpoints, it's often blinding arrogance.

@BIGBMH -

I'm by no means supporting blind following of those reviews as said gospel. If anything, I strongly encourage reading elaborately through some (if not most) of them, in order to gain a more accurate perspective than a simple score of one or two digits. What I am adamantly against, however, is this modern hailing of our personal opinions as said gospel instead.

Plus, and I'm honestly tired of saying this for years now, I am disappointed in seeing how many people fail to realize the difference between personal preference and quantifiable quality. We no longer see the diffeence between liking or disliking a film and knowing whether it is objectively good or not.

Honestly I’m shocked. I for sure thought it would’ve started higher. Like in the 90s. I’m still excited to see either way.

@TheFireForce - maybe critics are realizing they'll begin to lose credibility if they keep championing every "new" addition to the MCU to kingdom come?
EZBeast
EZBeast - 7/5/2022, 11:13 AM
@McMurdo - agreed, people give crap to rotten tomatoes but it’s still a relatively reliable source for a general consensus of a film (even if there is some favoritism at play) and now we live in a time where marvel movies aren’t quite the “new amazing” films they used to be and now the way we view them is more critical as they aren’t meeting our new expectations.

Seeing this weekend, I hope I like it. Doctor Strange: MOM didn't do it for me... The only movies from phase 4 that made me left with a smile were Shang-Chi & No Way Home.

@TheShellyMan - I'm with you. I really didn't enjoy Strange 2. The story wasn't tight enough. It seems all over the place and while that is understandably part of the Multiverse I think they wasted the perfect opportunity to take us on a solid journey through the Multiverse.

When I saw that Waldron wrote it that pretty much explained why it was so disjointed. Loki was written in a smilier fashion.

@TyrantBossMedia - Man DS2 pissed me off so much. It made me hate Wanda and I didn't even care one way or the other. They really should have given Wanda her solo films if they cared that much and let us have a Strange focused multiverse movie at worst. That would have been a million times better. Focusing so much on Wanda took away not just from the movie, from the direction but also Strange himself. It sucks when something sucks for you even though it's your fav character.
