Previously, Marvel's Red Guardian actor David Harbour teased the 'funny and complex' relationship his character has with Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova in Thunderbolts and now, he's providing a little more detail.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Harbour stated, "So they have a lot of unexplored history. There's a lot of details that the director, Jake, has gone into the great care of what their life was like in the Midwest when they were doing all that spy stuff. And then, a lot of that comes up in really fun, interesting, beautiful ways, which, like in the Black Widow movie came up with that song, American Pie. And there's just a lot of complexity between me and Florence's character, which I love."

"And also they're two people that... she can't stand him, but she needs someone because she's incomplete in a certain way that he may be able to help her with. I think that's always so beautiful. Because I feel like our relationships are always so... Sometimes we don't get to choose the people that complete us. The people that we really need. I think that they exemplify that in their own way. It will be fun to bring that to life in the movie."

Thunderbolts is currently slated to hit theaters on July 25, 2025. The film is currently wedged between Fantastic Four (May 2, 2025) and Blade (November 7, 2025). Phase 6 then closes out the Multiverse Saga with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (May 1, 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (May 7, 2027).

Contrary to Harbour's comments above regarding Thunderbolts' callbacks to Black Widow, director Jake Schreier has previously stated that it would be a big mistake to view Thunderbolts as a direct sequel.

"I wouldn't look at this as a sequel at all. And we don't talk about it that way," said Schreier back in August, prior to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

Confirmed members of theThunderbolts team include Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko). Steven Yeun has also been leaked as portraying The Sentry in the film.

Additionally,  Ayo Edebiri has an undisclosed role and Harrison Ford's Thunderbolt Ross is expected to appear.

The project is a reunion of the creative team behind Netflix's Beef as Schreier directs from a script co-written by the series' creator, Sung "Sonny" Jin Lee.

What a f*ckin shit take on The Red Guardian. He is meant to be the Russian equivalent to Captain America and they made him a complete joke.

@dragon316 - Yeah it's crap, Captain America is the only character they got pretty accurate to me.

Steven Yeun - Great addition to the cast. He is a very good actor.

Steve Yeun as Sentry - Stupid casting misstep driven by DEI agenda nonsense.

The post Endgame Disney still doesn't get it. Representing many ethnicities is a good thing. Doing such a bonehead job of it is a bad stupid thing.

@DocSpock - They should have added Radioactive Man to the team, who is Asian.

@DocSpock - Should have been Amadeus Cho, I think it would have been obvious if anyone that works at Marvel Studios was an actual comic book reader.

@Matchesz - i agree. Would have been top casting for Amadeus!
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 11/29/2023, 8:20 AM
@DocSpock - Very well put. They should just focus in writing good stories. Diverse characters already exist in their comics, X-Men for example is full of them, so there isn't a need to keep changing characters to fit an agenda. But they only listen when it hurts the wallet, so soon we should hopefully see changes.

That makes too much sense.

That is a good idea. That's why they won't do it.

@DocSpock - I don't think Steven Yeun's casting was down to DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion for those who don't know the acronym). I think it was down to Jake Schreier (the director), Lee Sung Jin (the co-writer) and Yeun all having been involved in Beef.

Anyway, Yeun is a good actor. Sentry is a cool character. This will not be the Sentry character from the comics, but an alt universe version. I hope this new version is as interesting in his own way.

I agree, but like a dog with a wound, they just won't stop licking it.

I hope you are right, but I doubt it.

@DocSpock - if it turns out that Steven is playing Sentry before he gets his powers, and they vfx him to be bigger once he has them, would you be okay with it then?

I'm hoping that's the case and that they size him up once he gets dosed. Not that I have a huge issue with him playing the character even if he is still the same size as his actual self. I think throwing in some vfx magic to make him more imposing would certainly be a benefit.

Good idea. That would be better than a shrimpy Sentry.

Hot on the heels of Iman saying we need characters to care about, we have this quote from Harbour confirming what I suspected... that the thunderbolts movie is all about the characters and their relationships and interactions. I hope we get spectacular action along with it. But I do care about Bucky and Yelena. And US Agent is a delight to see on screen.

Also I guess they have their scripts already otherwise how would David know all this? Or did they start filming?

bkmeijer1 - 11/29/2023, 8:59 AM
@Vigor - seeing how production was supposed to start this past summer before all the delays, I bet they scripts are definitely past the draft phase atleast.

But I'm not sold yet. We do indeed characters to care about, but the current roster isn't that interesting to me. They're all kinda similar, so I can see no interesting characters dynamics/relations come from them. I don't expect a lot of tension honestly.
Matchesz
Matchesz - 11/29/2023, 8:22 AM
Character interactions are important but damn would it hurt to actually have action set pieces that dont look fake and that actually is cool and makes sense ? by that I mean no over the top cgi battles if they cant even get the cgi right or keep it consistent with the rest of the film. I mean stuff seems like a no brainer. If you cant get the action right then whats even the point? I dont want to pay $15 to listen to some jokes
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 11/29/2023, 8:27 AM
@Matchesz - With The Sentry involved it will be hard to escape the CGI.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/29/2023, 8:56 AM
@Matchesz - I agree. And I think they don't even need big action set pieces. Think especially Civil War is proof of that. There were very high stakes in the third act, yet it all ended with a fist fight at the bottom of an abandonded Soviet missile base
Metan
Metan - 11/29/2023, 8:41 AM
Cautiously hopeful for Thunderbolts. I haven't liked most of the recent MCU output (granted, I'm yet to see The Marvels or Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania), but the creative team is good, and maybe as more of a b-level project in terms of the overarching Multiverse saga narrative, featuring throwaway characters, it will escape executive mandates and meddling a little more than some.
Metan
Metan - 11/29/2023, 8:59 AM
Also: given a lot of the lineup for the team are effectively non-characters at this point, due to pretty thin characterisations in previous projects and where those projects left them, it will be interesting to see how this one develops and defines them.

What Harbour and others have said sounds promising. But, hopeful as I am, not gonna get those hopes up too high lest I just be disappointed again, ha.

Out of the six movies we're getting before Kang Dynasty, I probably look forward to this one the least. We already saw this relationship explored in BW, and the rest of the characters don't seem that interesting either (aside from Bucky and Ghost).
Vigor
Vigor - 11/29/2023, 11:14 AM
@bkmeijer1 - being that this is the end of a phase, they have a lot riding on this one. This is the biggest team up since endgame. This will set the tone going into the battle against Kang and the eventual xmen. For that reason alone, I'm expecting an event movie
LSHF
LSHF - 11/29/2023, 1:47 PM
@bkmeijer1 - understandable. I suspect that the characters will be more interesting if they are written that way, so hopefully we get that in the film.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 11/29/2023, 2:01 PM
@Vigor @LSHF - how the characters are written and play off of each other is definitely gonna make or break it. Got a lot to proof this one

@bkmeijer1 - Yes, the writing is of extreme importance.

Fingers crossed.

"said Schreier back in August, prior to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes."

The WGA strike started in April, and it wouldn't matter anyway, since director's guild members were free to discuss anything they wanted during both strikes.

I'm betting they end up dropping this, and most of their slate. People are just tired of mediocrity and worse.
