THUNDERBOLTS: It's Now Been Confirmed That Steven Yeun Will Play Sentry

After persistent online rumors, Robert Kirkman has let slip that Invincible star Steven Yeun will indeed play Sentry in Marvel Studios' upcoming Thunderbolts movie...

Back in June, we learned that Steven Yeun had joined the cast of Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts movie, and while his character wasn't named at the time, several online scoopers claimed that he would be playing Sentry.

The Walking Dead alum has dropped a few vague hints in interviews since, but nothing particularly character-specific, mainly focusing on how he ended up landing his MCU debut role.

"It kind of came together in a weird way. Jake Schreier, who did episodes of Beef, he got the gig to direct it and he kinda saw me for this role, and I read the role, and I was like 'This is actually a really interesting role, I’d be down to explore this.'"

"I think it’s less about now checking things off a bucket list and more looking at an experience," he continued. "It’s more like ‘Do I want to experience that?’ Putting it out is a whole other thing that I’m gonna have to prepare for afterwards, but in the immediate, I’m just down to just experience that experience."

Though nothing has been officially announced, it looks like we now have confirmation that Yeun will indeed portray Robert Reynolds, aka the Sentry.

While speaking with comic artist David Finch, The Walking Dead and Invincible creator Kirkman came right out and said: "My good friend Steven Yeun is playing the Sentry in a movie:"

“Yeah, he called me, he went in for a costume fitting. I hope I’m not… I don’t think this is a spoiler or anything that will get anybody in trouble. I don’t know, maybe. We’ll see. I don’t care. I don’t work for Marvel. What are they going to do to me? He called me and he said, 'I just came back from a costume fitting for the Sentry. I guess I only do superheroes that are yellow and blue.' He said he was at the costume fitting and was like, 'Aww, crap. I forgot Invincible was yellow and blue.'"

So, there you have it - and it sounds like he'll be sporting a comic-accurate costume!

Though other characters might well be added, the Thunderbolts roster currently consists of Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).

Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) will put the team together, and may also be partially responsible for Sentry's creation. Harrison Ford will replace the late William Hurt as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, who may wind up transforming into the Red Hulk.

Bear breakout Ayo Edebiri is also on board in a secret role.

Jake Schreier (Robot and Frank, Dave) is set to direct, with Black Widow scribe Eric Pearson penning the script.

Thunderbolts was recently pushed back to July 25, 2025.

@Shivermetimbers - Think it is likely going to be a loose adaption of Sentry and be more a Goku like version of the concept so going from Black hair to Blonde could work if going a duality route for the whole Void thing (Blonde for evil, black hair for good more than likely if so just cos...). Makes sense to make him more Super Sayan than another direct Superman type having already done that with Eternals and Homelander still around in the Boys and a new DC Superman film on the way etc.

I already knew and trusted the scoopers that leaked it, so not much surprise from my end.

Good luck to Steven Yeun!

Remember the days when MCU was actually good with casting actors to play the characters? When was it, ten years ago?

Yeah, sure, a scrawny 40-year-old short-haired dude is my perfect casting for Sentry.

At least cast someone who's young and has the required physicality.

@URCOMMENTSUCKS - good thing they invented wigs a couple centurys ago and weights a few thousand before that.
Arthorious

@Itwasme - im not too savy on my knowledge on Sentry but doesn’t he transform similarly like Shazam? It would be of little consequence of who portrays him if he does
URCOMMENTSUCKS
URCOMMENTSUCKS - 11/17/2023, 12:54 AM
@Arthorious - That's like saying Thor doesn't need to be played by a blonde muscular guy because his default form is Don Blake.

FinnishDude
FinnishDude - 11/17/2023, 2:15 AM
@URCOMMENTSUCKS - Remember when people were mad that they got some unknown Aussie to play Thor, instead of heavily rumored Triple-H, or that guy who was Human Torch in two terrible Fantastic Four to play Cap?
URCOMMENTSUCKS
URCOMMENTSUCKS - 11/17/2023, 2:29 AM
@FinnishDude - this has nothing to do with my comment, dumbass. Nothing you have mentioned has anything to do with their appearances. Also, that's a strawman argument, because I don't recall anyone being ''mad'' at Hemsworth's casting, let alone wanting a wrestler to play the character.

@Itwasme - It's wild to me that people think hair s a necessity for accuracy but race, one of or most defining traits as humans...

"nahh it'll be fine".
Origame
Origame - 11/17/2023, 6:21 AM
@Chaos200 - yeah. They'll b!tch about details like superman wearing his red trunks, but race? Nah, he can be as black as the void for all they care.

At least supermans costume can be changed in sequels.
