THUNDERBOLTS: Rumored Details On Sentry's Role And The Movie's Real Villain - Possible Spoilers

Some more (rumored) details on the role the Sentry will play in Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts movie here, along with the character who'll reportedly be pulling the powerful villain's strings...

Though nothing has been confirmed, the "Superman-level" threat the Thunderbolts will face in the upcoming Marvel Studios movie is believed to be the Sentry, and we may now have a better idea of how the mega-powerful character will factor into the story.

According to insider @CanWeGetToast, Sentry will indeed serve as the main "physical antagonist," but the real mastermind pulling his strings will be Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus).

Yes, Val is expected to put the titular team together, but based on what we can gather, she will ultimately be revealed as the real big bad - which probably shouldn't come as a major surprise after witnessing her duplicitous methods in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Val will reportedly play a hand in Sentry's "creation" (in the comics, it's a meth addict named Robert Reynolds who gains the power of a million exploding suns), and, if we had to hazard a guess, attempt to use him to secure Wakanda's Vibranium reserves.

Where the Thunderbolts themselves fit in remains to be seen, but there's a chance Val will either use them as scapegoats or as a way to maintain her cover.

As for potential casting, there's still some internet scuttlebutt surrounding Ryan Gosling (though we hear they're looking for someone a little younger), and Alexander Ludwig's (Vikings, Heels) name has also popped up.

As with any rumor, it's best not to put too much stock in this until we hear something official.

Though other characters might well be added, the Thunderbolts roster currently consists of Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), John Walker/U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).

Harrison Ford will replace the late William Hurt as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, who may wind up transforming into the Red Hulk.

Jake Schreier (Robot and Frank, Dave) is set to direct, with Black Widow scribe Eric Pearson penning the script.

Thunderbolts is slated to open on July 26, 2024.

And she'll be working for Kang. Or will be Kang.

@bobevanz - One of the main complaints that people had about phase 4 was that "it was all over the place", "no clear goal or overall arc", "nothing is connected" and now apparently we are back to the old everything is too connected debacle.

@ObserverIO - She might not be working with Kang, but I feel as though Kang may want Sentry on his side, or see him as a threat to his goal of multiversal conquest.

@comicfan100 - The Sentry could become a weapon of the illuminati.
If the MCU Sentry is connected to the power of the void, he could be weaponised against other universes in case of an incursion.

@GreedoSarducci @Urubrod - Imagine working at Marvel Studios and having to deal with this shit every day. I imaging that Kevin has a button on his chair in his office that opens up a tunnel under his desk like in "Batman Beyond". But instead of taking him to the Batcave it takes him to a day spa. One with gurgling waters and acupuncture. And women who walk on your back wearing bamboo shoes. And "happy endings". Because, hey, Big Kev deserves it.

So Ross will figure out what’s going on and realize that sentry is mopping the floor with the thunderbolts team and that will be the impetus for him to become a hulk and help defeat Sentry. Doesn’t feel like the red hulk transformation is earned yet. Hope they wait.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 1/24/2023, 12:24 PM
@Shivermetimbers - Or it's all a game Val plays. She forms the Thunderbolts to attack Sentry but uses Sentry to gain vibranium. She's playing every side to get what she wants.
Shivermetimbers
Shivermetimbers - 1/24/2023, 5:51 PM
@SonOfAGif - Or, maybe Ross is responsible for creating the Sentry in the MCU and he is the big bad. Maybe in the process of trying to become superpowered himself, Ross uses the guy as a test subject, creates the Sentry and then uses the test on himself and turns into red hulk. Then the Thunderbolts turn Sentry to their side and they all fight red hulk at the end. Could be cool.

I'm not really a fan of this idea. Much rather just see Red Hulk and Zemo be the villains in this. Rather see them keep Sentry for a World War Hulk movie.
Humperdink
Humperdink - 1/24/2023, 8:14 AM
@bkmeijer1 -

Who's to say Val is working alone and that Sentry couldn't be cast in more than one film with this one setting him up?

Seems like everything you're talking about could still happen anyway.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/24/2023, 9:00 AM
@Humperdink - that is very true.

It's just that if there's already Red Hulk, Zemo and Val, another antagonist might make the movie feel to crowded. Could do without Sentry.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 1/24/2023, 7:27 AM
Both The Sentry and Thunderbolts were great concepts when they first came out. Completely unique and novel. Then they degraded into cheap empty archetypes. Just another OP Bad Superman and cheap Suicide Squad-esque team.
Taonrey
Taonrey - 1/24/2023, 7:46 AM
I dont know much about sentry, isn't he marvel Superman? Can a team of super soldiers and regular humans even fight him? also if u can created a dude like him why would u even bother with vibranium.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/24/2023, 7:57 AM
@Taonrey - there's probably something that only allowed them to make a dude like that once, just like with Captain America.

That said, you make a good point. Sentry is quite powerful, so he would indeed mop the floor with a bunch of super soldiers.
TheRose
TheRose - 1/24/2023, 8:11 AM
@Taonrey - Can they kill the Sentry? Unlikely, he has the power of "a million exploding suns."

Can they subdue him long enough to let Sentry's madness become a losing condition for the Sentry? Difficult, deadly, uncertain--but I think it's possible.

I think that @Shivermetimbers is on the money with their Red Hulk prediction being a great equalizer in this matchup. I'd still like to see Zemo factor as part of the plan as well--if there is someone who knows how to remove super-powers as an element in a fight, it's Baron Zemo.

bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/24/2023, 9:03 AM
@TheRose - whether Red Hulk or Sentry is gonna be the villain, it does indeed make sense to bring in Zemo to help figure out how to take them down.
TheRose
TheRose - 1/24/2023, 9:18 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Man, do I love me some Zemo!

I appreciate the Superhero-Silver-Bullet role that Zemo has taken in the MCU. He's less the Punchable-Sock-Face his was for the majority of his publication and more a Master Planner. Zemo is tactical and pragmatic (well, other than the convoluted Civil War plan). His motivation is resentful, vengeful spite, and yet he is more often than not calm and collected. And despite how bonkers the Civil War scheme was, you can't deny that Zemo actually won--an exclusive club with Farmer-Thanos.

He's a much better "Lex Luthor" than we've gotten in most live media, haha.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/24/2023, 9:21 AM
@TheRose - the first time I saw Civil War, his scheme did feel a bit convoluted. But that might also be because I was too focused on Tony vs Cap.

As for the rest, yeah he's a great master planner. Like it when a character is so calculated and righteous (according to his own beliefs).
TheRose
TheRose - 1/24/2023, 9:39 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Hey, a lot of the best villain schemese are convoluted. Zemo in Civil War, Joker in the Dark Knight, Palpatine in the Star Wars franchise, etc. Sometimes, that 4-D Chess pays off! It's certainly entertaining.
