Speaking with Forbes, director Michael Bay talks more about his fourth Transformers film, which he calls the first of a brand new trilogy and will begin shooting in May.. He reiterates prior comments on the sequel, saying that it's a completely new take on the series despite being in continuity with the previous trilogy. "We’re going to start off smaller. There’s a brand new cast. To freshen the franchise, we’ve redesigned everything from top to bottom. The history of the first three movies is still there, we start four years later and there’s a reason why we’re meeting a new cast. Mark [Wahlberg] is really excited about it and it’s a great redesign. I said that 3 [which grossed $1.1 billion] was going to be my last one. Paramount was letting me do Pain & Gain and the Transformers ride was opening at Universal and it was bittersweet to think of passing it off. I wanted to set it up on a really sure footing and to bring someone else in on that, it would have been overwhelming." Despite Wahlberg previously saying that Transformers 4 was a reboot, Bay says otherwise, confirming that the redesigns are for broadening the franchise. "No, that’s wrong. We keep the Transformers the way they were, it’s just four years later. There’s a reason the Transformers are redesigned. We’re trying to broaden the franchise and give it more places to go." Transformers 4 stars Mark Wahlberg and Jack Reynor. The film is set to hit theaters June 27th, 2014.

i care. Michael Bay is a GENIUS, a VISIONARY. he gave us both Megan Fox AND Rosie Hunting Whitely. as a red blooded man, how can you NOT appreciate that???

sure the movies suck but lets take it for what it is. 2 hours of fanservice.

i have high hopes for this. i really want it to be good. i enjoyed the first one alot but the second had a bad story. the third was better but didn't match the first one. in my opinion my favorite part of the whole franchise was the military aspect.

@TDK1939

did he really ruin it though?

i wont front. i'm too young to rememember the original cartoon series so i dont know if it was some sorta animated masterpiece on the level x-men, btas or avatar. but i do know about the transformers series i saw growing up, and it was nothing special at all. i liked it but it wasn't a classic. it was just decent.

"The history of the first three movies is still there..."

That's why people keep forgetting that Transformers exist in every movie.

for this fourth movie I'd say, lessen the jokes especially the perverted ones, lessen the saturation, and make the redesigned transformers at least 80% close to the generation 1 versions. oh yeah, and have Han Zimmer score it.

The series from the Late 80's early 90's were very good imo. With that said, the Transformer movies are bad in general, relating to the show or not. I enjoy the action a lot but it can't take away from the stupid/annoying parts.

2 and 3 are abominations.

The first is actually good to be honest. Shia is decent and Fox is bearable.

This sounds like the first, but its Bay so who knows.

Its sad when we have a fantastic show in Transformers Prime, fantastic video games in Transformers Cybertron, and a complete shitfest in film that is Bayformers.

Ehh, could be worse, look at Green Lantern.

What Revenge of the Fallen did to the Transformers is what Batman & Robin did to Batman.

The Transformer films are part of my biggest guilty pleasures.

I like that they're redesigning everythin', like that the Transformers will look like Transformers and not a bunch of metal scrapped together.

I have no faith in this film to be good, but I do think that this'll be another VFX-porn fest. The VFX just look damn stunning in every movie.

I really hope Bay is going to use IMAX once more, but more this time. It really benefits.

I always pictured a live action transformers to be a bit like platoon. Character driven, emotional, action packed with a good plot. The transformers not interacting with each other that much in the last movie is what frustrated me. It was ok for the first film, but after that they were just the background characters you have a hard time caring for. And im a fan!

Everybody who complains about it is going to go see it then wonder why it made money.

@Asterisk- These movies are more than just a pet peeve to me. Their existence just hurts me. These films started at the time where movies didn't need good stories or engaging characters to attract viewers. They just needed good visual effects. It looks like that time is coming to an end because people won't pay to see any mediocre crap with cool visuals in it. If that isn't true, then movies like Green Lantern would have succeeded.

Once Bay is done with Transformers, a new age in the blockbuster will be ushered in. In this economy, people aren't going to blow their money on just anything. Studios will be forced to put effort into their products or face the consequences.

I'm not the biggest Michael "BOOM BOOM" Bay fan, but I'm hopeful for this one. 1&2 were ok, but 3 I thought was really good. I'd love to see Nemesis Prime, or have Megatron transform into Galvatron.
