It looks like Michael Bay didn't learned he's lesson last time when every critic who viewed 'Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen' took him to task for the racist caricatures embodied in Skids and Mudflap, two robots who spoke in hip-hop slang and constantly bickered as a form of comic relief.

Now it seems 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' looks set to feature a new character named Topspin, who's a blue racer from the NASCAR circuit. who sports a mullet.

Then again, Topspin may not even speak or do anything other than assist his fellow Autobot Wreckers. However, this description from Wikipedia isn't all too promising:

Topspin likes hard jobs that leave him dented. He is very tough, but has below-average intelligence.

So what do you guys think is Michael Bay offend various social groups with he's "comic relief" and do you think it's funny ?Or just messed up?

Why be offended, now people with mullets world wide
have someone they can get behind and cheer for. I don't
think Joe Dirt did the mullet community any justice.
at least the transformer has a mullet and lots of guns.
sounds like a nascar fan to me.

@themanwithaplan: It's stereotype racism. Especially once you include the producers of that commercial and their target audience.

The mullet thing shouldn't be such a major factor. The two retarded robot twins from Transformers 2; that shit was racist. One of them said a line that "they can't read", and they spoke ghetto. Obviously Mr. Bay was implying stupidity amongst n*ggaz that wear gold caps and talk with slang.

Good grief.
So what if a Transformer has a different 'hair' style than any other? *sigh*

@earzmunbdo: I'm not looking for any place to spark an argument. This topic, however, enticed it. I called them retarded because their characters are; it's what Bay implied and I don't like it. You must not realize that hollywood has power and connections throughout everything. Tyrese sold out and he happens to be the only black person in the movie. Coincidentally, he says "you gotta wonder... if GOD made us in His image, who made them?" Clearly his role is to confuse a percentage of the masses. He is a puppet like everyone else in power. Bay not getting static for these occurrences ain't beyond me; he has the elite backing him.

Since when did stereotyping someone, based on racist rhetoric, become anything other than racism?
Oxion
Oxion - 2/26/2011, 5:28 PM
Soooooo no complaints when they had Jazz in the first transformers, although they did kill him, the hip hop robot wit mo' swagg than the other robots. But the twins bring offense cuz they ghetto actin, which some black people are, and now the "redneck" Autobot who acts just like alot of real NASCAR fans. If people don't like looking in the mirror, than don't see the movie but remember the robots learn from us, the humans in the movie and how we act is how they act so GET THE [frick] OVER IT! and Im black in case anyone wants to talk shyt. :)

1) It's not racist because Michael Bay is white and most rednecks with mullets are white.

2) The grammar in this article/editorial is horrible.
Fonzieismypal
Fonzieismypal - 2/26/2011, 6:09 PM
I really don't understand how the twins were racist...

Were they super ghetto? Yes. Were the characters dumb? Yes? Were they intended to offend African-Americans? No. Were they intended to offend ghetto, gang-banging, tools? Yea probably. It wasn't a social commentary on African-Americans. If anything, it was a social commentary on America's huge population of underachieving, wannabe-thugs, some of which are white.

If the twins were racist, then by that logic this new NASCAR character is racist as well. The character looks like a redneck, and most rednecks are white so apparently, based on this post-modern American assumption that making fun of different stereotypes reflects one's feelings about an entire ethnicity, this character is incredibly racist.

This is Frakking stupid, what is not stereotyping then? Is the "Q" but a job at nerdy types then? People need to grow up and just except the people who like NASCAR most likely have a mullet. Alot of younger children talk and act like the twins portrayed. Everyone is just sensitive, oh and if your afraid of your 5 year old being influenced by these movies then don’t let em watch it. that’s why its rated PG13

@earzmundo: Smith and Lawrence are sellouts, meaning modern house negroes. Ms. Union, I don't know.. I understand what you're saying.. I don't think Bay is flat out racist, but I think in a majority of Caucasians, racism traces are there. All it takes to throw people off is to work with a black person. I don't follow the media, and hollywood is guaranteed racist. The movies that 'do' have a black person in them(which are scarce) seems like an affirmative action scenario. Maybe I'm going too deep into this, and Bay's racism is up for speculation, so I'll withdraw my assumptions for now. However, my logical mind does deem over 90% of hollywood as racist, so it's obviously not a long stretch for me. Not by opinion, but moreso the proof being in the pudding. In any case, no offensive intent taken, I hope. I'm just cynical. O_o

So anyone who doesnt agree with Jer3miahs view of Bay as a racist, or any black actor who acts in a movie that in some whay shape or form underminds the image of a black person is obviously a sell out and a tool of white racist hollywood. So then assuming that we use that mentality it would be safe to say any asian person in a movie is automatically assumed to be a grandmaster of some form of martial arts, owns a dry cleaner business or is highly intelligent. i guess it means that since I am covered in tattoos that I am a felon whos done hard time or a merchant marine or soomething. lets face it, White people are rich KKK card carrying racist and black people are just victims of society and prejudice. Listen to your self as you sound friggn retarded. Get over it and stop reading in to it. @ Earz we can argue with certain people until we turn blue in the face. That being said though no matter how much sense we make some people are just going to see and believe whatever they want despite how much the facts conclude the opposite. In the end the only thing that we can prove from this is that Bay is a friggn moron who relies more on effects than plots for his movies and put a set of balls on the damn Devastator robot.

Hair cuts on robots?
Is it just me or is the idea itself just lame without labeling it as anything else?
For the most part I have enjoyed the Transformers franchise. The truck nuts were more offensive imo than the stereotypes of the mudflap and skids characters.
But then again that's just me.

@fanboy76: So perhaps I am a bit too taken by the idea of racism. I'm sure it comes off as much more than cynical, but understand that... through research and experience, my view on the world was shaped. Racism is the least on my plate. In all honesty, the entire planet and all it's inhabitants can rot for all I care. Humans, in general, are scum bags, so despite a stereotype or racial slur, the fact still remains that human's flaws outweigh anything and everything. But then again... if you don't know about Los Illuminados, then we're on different playing fields, my friend. Heh.
