THE BOYS Animated Anthology Spinoff Series DIABOLICAL Coming Early 2022 To Prime Video

It sounds like we're getting a lot more of The Boys in 2022 as Prime Video has announced a new animated anthology spinoff series titled Diabolical, which is set to debut sometime early next year.

While we await word on a premiere date for The Boys season three, Amazon Prime Video has made an unexpected, but welcome announcement, as the streamer has ordered another spinoff series set in the same universe.

Diabolical is an eight-episode animated anthology series that will further expand the Vought Cinematic Universe with original stories by Awkwafina, Garth Ennis, Eliot and Ilana Glazer, Simon Racioppa, Justin Roiland and Ben Bayouth, Andy Samberg, and Aisha Tyler. Executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who are also behind Invincible, contributed as writers on this as well.

In the official announcement video below, The Boys star Karl Urban says, “There is no question that you guys are the greatest fans in the world. As a special way of saying thank you to you, we’ve got a little surprise for you which is going to drop early next year. While we've been hard at work on season three, Eric, Seth, and Evan have asked a few of their celebrity mates to cook up eight deliciously unique, twisted, animated episodes set in the world of ‘The Boys.'

With the series set to arrive Early 2022, it's fair to assume it may hit the streaming service ahead of the long-awaited third season premiere of The Boys, although that's yet to-be-determined.

Speaking with Deadline, executive producer Eric Kripke said “Surprise! We’re almost finished with eight episodes of our animated series, ‘Diabolical.' We gathered together some incredible creators and we gave them one rule… just kidding, there’s no rules. They blew the doors off it, delivering eight completely unexpected, funny, shocking, gory, moist, emotional episodes. You think ‘The Boys’ is nuts? Wait till you see this.” while fellow EPs Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg added, “Ever since we saw the animated film ‘The Animatrix,’ a series of short animated films set in the universe of ‘The Matrix,’ we’ve wanted to rip it off. Today that dream has come true.

Check out the announcement video below:

The Boys is an irreverent take on what happens when superheroes, who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods, abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It's the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about "The Seven", and their formidable Vought backing.

That lineup is nuts. This is going to be a ridiculous romp, going after the new animated KING: Invincible.

They quote The Animatrix being their inspiration but considering this is being announced and coming on the even of those anthology Star Wars Vision animated show it would not surprise me if they were inspired by this as well.

I'll have to make a mental note to check this out.

Can't wait for season 3 but this animated show sounds fun. Sure they are kind of overkilling it with spin-offs but that's the way the streaming game works. If something's a hit you stretch it out as much as you can to create maximum profit.
