THE BOYS Showrunner Eric Kripke Describes Jensen Ackles' Soldier Boy As "Homelander Before Homelander"

Season three of The Boys will feature Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy, and showrunner Eric Kripke has now weighed in what fans can expect from the character. As you might expect, he's not exactly a hero...

We've known for a while now that The Boys season three will introduce Soldier Boy, and that Supernatural star Jensen Ackles will play Him. What we don't know is how this version of the character will differ from the one in the comics, but showrunner Eric Kripke has now shed some light on that.

"I think anyone expecting Jensen to show up and be a good guy, they will be disappointed. I’ll say that! [Laughs]" Kripke revealed when asked about reteaming with the actor for the Amazon series. "In the comics he’s mostly just kind of bumbling and subservient to Homelander, I would say. As we’re writing him in this, we’re getting to really talk about the history of Vought because he’s like John Wayne: He’s one of these guys that’s been around for decades of Vought history."

"And he was Homelander before Homelander, so he’s from a different era, but he’s got the ego and the ambition — it just comes across in a different way because he’s from a different time."

There were three versions of Soldier Boy in Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's series, but it sounds like Ackles will be playing the original in season three of The Boys (who, like Captain America, may find his way into the present day reading between the lines here). It's hard to say for sure what we should expect, but he's clearly going to be a pivotal part of where this story goes next.

How excited are you to see Ackles' Soldier Boy in action?

I hope this show encourages an uptick in quality for other comic book shows. My expectations are higher because of this and Watchmen.

@InfinitePunches - this show has a generally crazy level of quality. Not only superhero shows should latch on to that standard but TV in general.

Excited for season 3 and I'm glad that Ackles is joining a established series rather than going for a pilot.
Usually successfull actors tend to jump onto shows that really end up taking the piss (wich I'm afraid Jared Padalecki's new show "Walker" will).

So Supes don't age?

@Kumkani - it feels like certain ones don’t age. Idk. It’s something they should define more concretely.

I’m guessing he’ll be like Ultimate Captain America. Seemingly quiet & polite in a charming old fashioned way but hiding a lot of discriminations that were befitting the times he was born in?

One thing that doesn’t make sense in the TV version of Boys is that despite having a sprawling Supes community with teams like G-men, Seven & presumably Payback there have never been supervillains before Homelander released Compound V in season 1 so all those movies about Black noir & G-men etc. who were they fighting against & even in this universe I imagine it’s going to be immensely boring to see a movie about your favorite Supes easily crushing their opposition with little difficulty.

@Sonata92 - they may have had normal people and gave them super powers through effects? While obviously the seven had real powers 😄 just my guess

I hope he's not just a morally corrupt Captain America, to go along with Homelander's morally corrupt Superman. If they give him a little more nuance, that would be great. And also, the show needs more villains, next season. The last few episodes were entertaining. But other than people's heads mysteriously blowing up, the conflicts felt a bit small.

Hope he sticks around more compared to Shawn Ashmore

After all the mistakes Homeland made, I think Soldier Boy will be on a mission to keep a close eye on Homeland. He will be assigned as a sidekick, but he will really be the one to watch over the vigilante. xD

Something tells me his is going to be WORSE than Homelander. Wonder what he’s been up to all these years.

It really doesn't sound like he's gonna get to the present the same way Cap did. I see this as more of a Stormfront deal where he's just been alive all this time. The only way I see them doing the Cap story is if its being subverted, like maybe the boys find a frozen supe thinking he's alive but really he's been dead the whole time.

Hope they don't make him too overpowered. We need weak villains too (Boys couldn't defeat even Black Noir and the only who can withstand a supe is Starlight).

Given from what time period he is, maybe he'll be racist? But that might be a bit too similar to Stormfront, so who knows.

@DARKSIDEIS - well there is a reason for that for plot wise

@RegularPoochie - I get it. But don't you think it'll get a bit repetetive?
I love it when the Boys lose, but after a few seasons it gets boring. So far the only time, they had an upper hand, was thanks to a phone call to Edgar or thanks to the video from Maeve.

I hope they'll get to do more, than to just call for help.

My theory is he is just like homelander, but a little less psychopathic. I think the Boys will try to manipulate him to help them take out Homelander because they see him as less of a threat.

A scene between Soldier Boy and Homelander needs to happen in order to see what goes down.

Clearly the only good supes are still Starlight, Queen Maeve and Kimiko. (And at least Lamplighter had a conscious of sorts like Maeve)
