AMC Execs Update The Status Of THE WALKING DEAD Spinoff

"[The Walking Dead spinoff] is not as far along [as the Breaking Bad spinoff, Better Call Saul]," say AMC's network chief and programming head. Is the spin-off in fact not 100 percent green-lit?

The Walking Dead spinoff tv series

Here's what AMC network chief Charlie Collier and programming head Joel Stillerman told Vulture regarding the status of The Walking Dead spinoff that currently aiming for a 2015 release:

[The Walking Dead spinoff] is not as far along [as the Breaking Bad spinoff, Better Call Saul]. Robert [Kirkman] has some things on his plate. He continues to write every issue of the comic and hasn’t finished season four of The Walking Dead, which he is very intimately involved with and will continue to be. That’s really in the incubation stages. The one thing that I’ll share is just an anecdote that Robert shared with us. He has such a specific vision that he laid out really clearly in the first issue of the comic book. And I encourage anybody who’s interested in the show to go read the note that he wrote in the first issue of the comic. His motivation for telling that story was so clear and so powerful, and it served as such a great north star for the show. We kicked around a few ideas, but primarily what he’s working on is, what is the idea that gives [him] as clear a mandate to make another version of this show as [he] had for the first one? What is going on [now] is a more philosophical discussion over why there should be another version of the show. Once we answer that, we’ll zero in on the specific creative.

Back in September '13, AMC issued an official press release announcing a spinoff of cable's most watched program, The Walking Dead. Subsequent soundbites from Kirkman and other AMC affiliated individuals have hinted that the spinoff will be a prequel, set in an entirely different locale and will feature an all new-cast of characters not encountered in the television show or comic book. But the clock is currently ticking and it appears that Kirkman and co. haven't exactly zeroed in on a definitive narrative for the spinoff. Vulture followed that line of reasoning, asking Collier and Stillerman if the spinoff is not 100 % green-lit; to which they replied, "It’s in development. What we want to do is not diminish the mothership. What we want to do is find something that everyone involved feels as passionately about as being a unique vehicle and unique enterprise as compared to the original series. We’ll take our time, and we’ll do it right." Do you think the spinoff should follow a new cast? Should it be a prequel? Will the spinoff damage the original or enhance it? There's currently a lot of questions surrounding the project and not many answers. Most of these questions should be answered as we move deeper into 2014 but the most pressing question at the moment is will they be answered in time for the spinoff to stay on track for its 2015 release date?

Kirkman is basically trying to fix/re-do all the faults with the show so far.

If I were to name a few - 1x06, Season 2, Season 3 and Season 4. I'm sure I'm missing something.

Love the comics but the TV series is very hit and miss. The writing is really poor at times. Very frustrating. And we certainly don't need a spinoff.

In a perfect world it would be like 5 episodes per season, last 90 minutes each and adapt the Telltale's game.

I love The Walking Dead but even i think this show does not need a spin off. Season four has been my favorite season so far and i'm looking forward to more Walking Dead.

If a spin off was not green lit then i would not care but you have to admit this show still remains to be awesome.

more pockets of people against other pockets of people... but with a new cast! throw some new elements into the formulae like evolving the zombies into something different or forget it. this show is basically a soap opera nowadays

@Desrow

No Morgan spin-off... But hell Lennie James could do it if he wanted. Low Winter Sun was cancelled - his schedule is (kinda) freed!!!!! He's still doing another TV show I believe, but he films those episodes at the end of each year while TWD films in May to November. He can join the recurring cast in Season 5 and the show can follow the comics for the first damn time in years.

There are so many people on this site that seem to hate successful shows or movies that are adapted from books. I swear it is like they enjoy stuff that flops over like a hipster would but when it goes main stream they absolutely hate it.
The Walking Dead is the most watched show on TV. It clearly isn't "shit."

I love the show and I hope they do make a spin-off. I see what Kirkman is saying though. They shouldn't rush it. If they rush it just to get more viewers and money then it will be worthless. There has to be a good story to tell.

GageHarts. You talk rubbish. Justin Bieber sells millions. Would you then say he's also not shit?

I like the show but it's far from perfect. It could be much better.

This is a series that I could see being shot as a feature film to both tie up existing cast members story lines and introduce new ones all in the context of a nice "R" rating. It would also be a nice jumping off point to another series. Stay tuned!

@Slider, "feature films" are the worst way for a TV show to go out. It is so pointless to do! It would most likely flop because no one wants to go finish a show they can watch at home for free at a theatre for $12! Remember how the show "Dead Like Me" tried to go out with a film? Straight to DVD & Netflix streaming. Lmao.

@Kurne

Yes, you are indeed missing something. They seriously [frick]ed the character andrea from the comics up. In my eyes, the greatest mistake they ever did. But still, it's fun to watch.

Remember in season 1 when the CDC building was said to level everything in like a 200ft radius or something then they just hide behind a car parked at the sidewalk of the CDC building and are fine? Or in season 2 when they hide under cars to avoid the zombie horde even though in the first episode of the first season they show that the zombies can smell you, thats how they know you're alive and also will chase you under cars? Yea this show has such good continuity and writing.

Btw I've only seen up to the first episode of the second season so who knows how much more bullshit has happened.
