The Cast Of THE WALKING DEAD Share Their Thoughts On Season Two Criticism

Season two of The Walking Dead came under fire from some fans and critics due to its slow pace and a few storylines (the hunt for Sophia) which REALLY dragged. Here, the cast of the show all share their thoughts on such criticisms. Check it out!

The third season of The Walking Dead will air on October 14th later this year on AMC and will include such fan favourite characters as 'Michonne' and 'The Governor' as well as locations like 'The Prison' and 'Woodbury'. Fans are hoping it will be more exciting than the second season which, while still a damn good TV show, was more than a little slow in places as the survivors found themselves on Hershel's farm. In a feature over at Entertainment Weekly, the cast of the show have shared their thoughts on such criticisms. Be sure to click on the link below to read comments from Sarah Wayne Callies (Lori Grimes) and producer Gale Anne Hurd.

Robert Kirkman - Writer/Executive Producer

I know that we’re all very proud of season 2, and we’re very happy with how it turned out. I think that once you see it all as a whole, you see how the first half — that some people said was slow — kind of built to a cool moment and really facilitated what happened in the later faster paced episodes.

Andrew Lincoln - Rick Grimes

I don’t watch the show, and I don’t read reviews. I stay out of the equation. All I knew is, I always had a sense that they wanted to play it out as a big movie. They always wanted to say that it’s a big story we’re telling and if you stick with it you will be rewarded. That was always Frank’s intention and Glen’s too. I shot it, so I was like, ‘I know what’s coming.’ I remember doing a lot of press for Spain, and Spain was going, ‘More Zombie.’ And I was like, ‘Please believe me, there is more zombie killing coming.’ Of course we want to get the balance right. We’re still learning what works and what doesn’t work. You can please some of the people some of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time. You can’t please all the people all the time. That’s just taste, and that’s cool. What I keep saying to people is that there is a very vocal, very extreme group of people that want a certain thing from this show. And they will watch this show. They will because it is extreme — more extreme than any f—ing thing I’ve ever been on. And the stuff we’re doing this season is out of the ballpark — it’s crazy what we’re doing this season.

Norman Reedus - Daryl Dixon

People are going say whatever they’re going to say anyway. If we killed a zillion zombies last season everyone would say, ‘There’s no storyline, they don’t talk enough.’ So f— ‘em! I’ve been trying to get into Game of Thrones. I can’t tell if it’s the future or the past, but those motherf—ers talk the whole time. Do I gotta bitch about it, or am I going to watch it and enjoy? I’m going to watch it and enjoy. People are going say whatever they say. You have to talk to tell a story. It’s not a cartoon. The pace this season is definitely amped up. We’re just talking faster.

Laurie Holden - Andrea

It’s not a Glen Mazarra – Frank Darabont thing. It’s storytelling, and I think that, first of all, you can’t please everybody — there’s always going to be a hater. But it needed to develop slowly in the beginning for the story — to get to know the characters, to really set up the conflict so you could go quickly and just have this tornado of action. But it can’t be like that all the time. I think it all ended up the way that it was supposed to.

Steve Yeun - Glenn

You take it personal in a way because this is something that you’ve worked hard at — and as a group, as a collective, you feel like you put your blood, sweat and tears into this. But at the same time, you realize that the arts are subjective. You accept what they give you, and then subsequently laugh when they say, ‘I can’t wait for the next season.’ And you’re very thrilled and happy about that. We know how this plays out by virtue of us filming this. So for me, it was always just like: Wait for it; wait for it. There’s a plan; we’re all here. There’s a solid checks and balances system of not letting something go too far one way. It’s a beautiful group dynamic, and I think it’s a testament to the cast and crew and writers and producers; everybody has their gear that they work. We get it, we’re not perfect, and obviously, last season wasn’t perfect. But you tweak, you stay consistent as well. You hope that people come back and watch.

Eh, Game of Thrones has 10x better writing than The Walking Dead, so I don't get why Reedus even compare the two shows.

I don't think he was saying it's worse then TWD, I think he was just making a point that just because himself would like to see GOT be more action packed, it's not gonna sit around and bitch about it, he'll wait to see how it all plays out

Season 2 was a bit frustrating watching it week-to-week but if you go back and watch it straight through, it all ties together quite nicely.

he was just saying that game of thrones can be really slow at points, lots of talkative story with little action. Just like season 2 was for walking dead.

The problem is that people will always compare it to the comics.
And there is no way that the show will ever get that good.

@ MarkJulian i concur!

i have only ever watched this show in large marathon chunks. Never had to wait a week between each hour. that being said, watching 4hours+ in a row, i thought it was a phenomenal season.

i remember Lost fans hated certain seasons for pacing problems, or time spent on or off story lines, but once again, i didn't have to wait 1-12 weeks between episodes.
same goes for my consumption of graphic novels or omnibus collections as opposed to monthlies/weeklies.

Great show. I was completely unaware there was any criticism about it--nor do I understand where it could be coming from. Again: Great show. Lots of fun.

I thought Season 2 blended together quite nicely. It had it's slow parts (substance) and it's awesome parts (style). It was a great season overall.

Also, anyone else read Norman Reedus' quote in his voice? It sounded EXACTLY how Daryl would respond to that type of question in the show. lol.

The funny part is that the entire cast ignores the possibility that the "slow parts" or "substance" just wasn't very good. I hate to look for realism in a TV show about a Zombie Apocolypse, but the character interactions were a little forced and didn't always tie together all that well. I'd like them to to develop characters, not caricatures.

All and all though, I'll still watch. I'm not ready to bail yet just because 4 or 5 episodes left me annoyed. Maybe if they stay on that road, but not yet.

I don't have a problem with slow TV shows, but the slow parts of TWD are absolutely horrible. Boring dialogue and basically just the characters arguing about the same stuff over and over again.

Season Two...

gave us a few really good moments that will be in my mind for a long time.

Shane sacrificing a fellow survivor to zombies so he could escape, when we already knew how shady his soul was, was so cool, for it wasn't in the comic. I remember sitting up yelling Holy Shit, he just didn't do that!!!.. that was sooo cool. we knew he needed to die.. Was going to die.. we were just waiting for him to die... as much as we were waiting for the hunt for Sofia to be over.. but, Shane was a great actor. I'll miss hating him. lol (Maybe Carl can act like a teen now after killing the zombie version.)

Dale's death was great. It was the first time his face didn't have that look of that someone just farted. I'll miss that look.

and for me, the BEST Zombie of the WHOLE season was Sofia. it's a shame you only saw her walk out and get shot. She moved soooo cool and looked fantastic!!! Not since the first episode when that lil girl zombie in slippers carrying a lil toy has there been as a cool looking zombie!

Was Season 2 worth just these facts? eh. I would have loved it if all of the shows were as exciting as the last episode. but I dream alot about zombies. LOL

The funny thing is, with the exception of maybe 1 or 2 people, anyone who had a problem with season 2 ( maybe even HATED it?), I guarantee will be right there watching season 3. So bitch all you want, you know you'll be right there.

I never watch week to week. I prefer to wait until a season is over and view it all at once. That is really how you can tell what works and what doesn't for the overall story. I personally thought season 2 was awesome and they got it right. Still I can see, if you were waiting a week between episodes, how you might feel a lil frustrated by the beginning of the season.

I disagree with most of you.

I liked the pacing of the story. When you watch it all together, like when they do the marathons, it all fits together nicely.

Its one seamless narrative that pieces together a bigger picture and grows the characters. I loved the whole Sophia story line...but whatever, to each his own.

I have read the entire comic series, after having first been introduced to the show, and I think the show is far superior and has the potential to be even greater.

I've also watched game of thrones, and although many of you have misrepresented what Norman Reedus said, game of thrones is not all that great. Its fantastic political intrigue with a lot of naked people.

Frankly, If I want pornography--theres this thing called the internet.

Wait, this has to be said. I agree with the guy who said the Carl kid needs to be killed.

The kid playing Carl is a terrible, terrible, terrible actor. There's no way he can live up to the standard set by comic book Carl. He is just awful.

Every time he pops up on the screen...just awful. In this regard, Game of thrones is infinitely better than walking dead. The level of talent between the child actors of both shows is just monumental.

Carl=bad.

@NorrinRaddical-I agree. I don't have the patience to watch a series week by week. Tried this with Breaking Bad and it wasn't working out to well as far as me being able to wait for the next one.

Same goes for comics. I hate waiting for each issue so therefore, I much prefer the graphic novels, so I can read it all in one chunk.

S2 was frigging incredible... any statement otherwise is folly. It had great...I mean GREAT moments that culminated in an extremely powerful scene...Sophia. I did watch it back to back, as that's the only way I can see it in the sand box.The developement of Shane alone, and his willingness to ANYTHING to survive was worth it.
