DOCTOR WHO Former Showrunner Steven Moffat Believes The Doctor Without Comedy Is "Terrifying"

Showrunner Steven Moffat had an eight-year stint on Doctor Who and has now shared his belief that, without comedy, the iconic Time Lord would be nothing short of "terrifying." Find more details here...

There are a great many layers to Doctor Who's titular Time Lord, regardless of which version we're talking about. Every actor has brought something different to the role and showrunner Steven Moffat was at the helm of both the Eleventh (Matt Smith) and Twelfth's (Peter Capaldi) stints in the TARDIS.

His eight-year run was considered a success among fans and, considering the fact he also contributed to the series during Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant's respective runs, it's fair to say he has a pretty good grasp of what makes this Time Lord tick.

During an interview with The Times (via SFFGazette.com), Moffat shared his belief that there's a dark side to the Doctor which is often - and needs to be - masked behind the character's comedic nature.

"If you write funny then you have to be in the present tense," the writer explained. "I was writing studio sitcoms like Coupling, then Doctor Who came along. Suddenly, people were saying I write serious drama. What are you talking about?"

"Even the Weeping Angels had two sitcom characters with funny names, Sally Sparrow and Kathy Nightingale. Russell [T Davies] writes like that, too. If there's a page without a joke in it, it feels wrong."

"If you take the comedy away, the Doctor is terrifying," Moffat shared. "This guy’s running into the middle of every fight he can find and deciding who should win. People get one chance, then he exterminates their species."

There's been speculation about him potentially returning to Doctor Who in some form and last year, Moffat responded to rumours he might be back to write an episode or two. "It's really very recent that I quit Doctor Who. Look, I love, I absolutely adore Doctor Who, it's the most wonderful show. But it's in very safe hands with Russell [T Davies]."

"I always stay in touch with Russell and ask him what he's up to and so on, of course I do," he continued. "That doesn't mean I'm dashing off to Cardiff on the train tomorrow - unless I am..."

Doctor Who is the longest-running action-adventure television series in the world spanning 60 years and winning over 100 awards. This quintessentially British show has a massive global following, with 9.6 million fans across social platforms/channels and 100 million video views on YouTube in the last year alone.

Following last month's Christmas Special, it was confirmed that Doctor Who will return with new episodes on BBC and Disney+ this May. You can watch the teaser below:

He's not wrong.

Look at "Heaven Sent", "A Good Man Goes to War", "Midnight" or "The Curse of Fenric".

The Doctor can be a dark and unforgiving character.

He often puts on a facade (as we all do) to cope with his demons.

@Ginley - Yup, when the Doctor goes full dead pan serious without any quips, rapidly becomes a scary character even if in context in a good way, too much of that the Doctor could come across darker than the Master.

So yeh, oft puts on a facade or go into manic mode when the convo's get too serious/emotional and can be argued after his trial decades back plus the Time War stuff in part down to running/scared of who and what he could become.

@Ginley - One of my favourites was with ending for the family of blood!

The fact that he'd essentially run away and turned himself human out of mercy, giving them a chance to live out their lives naturally, instead of killing them or dooming them with immortality, but then he ultimately gives them the immortality they wanted, just not in the manner that they wanted it.

And when you write it full of woke shit it’s a joke. Go figure.

Agree to some extent. When it comes to Universes / Multiverse ending threats, a little bit comedy here and there is pretty much "necessary" in MY opinion. But just make sure don't go full haha! style like Marvel Comedic Universe.

That's why The Doctor is such an incredible character; they're always trying to be nice, kind, compassionate, humorous, but just below the surface there's a lot of pain and rage, and seeing the conflict between those two sides of the character, and the rare moments when that rage comes out are what make them so fascinating and engaging.

@AC1 - The fact that he carried the guilt of what he thought he'd done to the timelords for a hundred years or more, until we got the three doctors together in The Day of the Doctor.
I thought that episode did well to show the underlying rage, anger and sorrow that the Doctor had been carrying.

Dr Who is supposed to be terrifying, at least for kids, that was the whole point of it….

That explains why I thought it would was a horror show when I was watching it without the volume.
