PEACEMAKER Star Viola Davis In Talks To Return As Amanda Waller In Her Own Spinoff Series

We finally know what that next The Suicide Squad spinoff will be as Peacemaker star Viola Davis is set to get her own show on HBO Max. Find more details on that, and the creative team, right here...

After returning as Amanda Waller in The Suicide Squad, Viola Davis briefly reprised the role in Peacemaker as well. At the end of that show's first season, her daughter exposed her mother's role in creating Task Force X, setting the stage for a major status quo shift with the character down the line.

We expected that to be touched on in Peacemaker's upcoming second season, but Variety is reporting that Davis is now in talks to star in her own spinoff series for HBO Max.

No plot details have been revealed, but the trade's sources tell them that "the show will build off of Waller’s appearance at the end of [Peacemaker]." Davis is set to executive produce the series, while Christal Henry (Watchmen) has been tapped to write and executive produce. James Gunn, meanwhile, will executive produce alongside DC Extended Universe vet Peter Safran.

Davis is no stranger to television after earning an Emmy award for her role in ABC's How to Get Away With Murder, while she's also starred in Scandal and The First Lady

This is presumably the spinoff Gunn has talked about in past interviews, and while it's definitely surprising to see a character as hateful as Waller get the spotlight, there was once a time we couldn't figure out why Peacemaker was getting his own show on the streaming service (and it ended up being one of the best stories told in this world).

Hopefully, this planned spinoff will follow Waller assembling a Task Force X made up of some real D-Listers, as The Suicide Squad proved how much potential an approach like that has.

Stay tuned for updates.

@BO31 - Man Sony and WB are really trying to out do each other. Sony makes a bad decision and WB decides to make an even worse decision.

I doubt Discovery is allowing this.

Announce Suicide Squad 3 already, damn it!

@TheHumanSpider2 - Loved The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, but after the movie's performance, is there really a chance at a third movie

Could get more spin offs. We need Ratcatcher

@TheHumanSpider2 - Shouldn't they announce Suicide Squad 2 first?

@Reeds2Much - The Suicide Squad was Suicide Squad 2...right?

@dracula - Yeah, it bombed like a MF, even without the pandemic, giving $180M to an R rated movie was already extremely risky.
A third movie would either have a smaller budget, or a PG13 rating...

@TheHumanSpider2 - The Suicide Squad being a second movie implies there was a movie before it, and as far as I can recall no movie exists in any timeline with Jared Leto as the Joker.

@TheHumanSpider2 - if it got us a sequel id be fine with either of those

Not every suicide squad movie needs to be massive in scale

The suicide squad is an r rated property but if a g rated version could work, with a good director pg 13 would work fine

@Reeds2Much -

@dracula - I think Gunn just asked for an insane budget, and then used it when Warner told him "yeah, sure, whatever, just do your Guardians thing".

A PG13 Suicide Squad movie can be done for less than $150M, and we know James can push those PG13 limits.

@TheHumanSpider2 - agree

@TheHumanSpider2 - I have a feeling Suicide Squad 3 may fare better than Suicide Squad 2, as a lot of the reaction to the second movie was "man the first movie sucked, I'm not going to see it." But the people that did see it, really enjoyed it. That said, word of mouth didn't save it, but the taste of the first movie did start to wash away.

However, Suicide Squad is a really risky property. The 2nd movie is basically its own movie, killing off the majority of the first movie's cast, and it's definitely tough doing that for each movie...

Or absolutely genius, almost in a "its the same concept but its a different situation with a different cast" kind of way. Like the opposite of American Horror Story.

Either way, there's no question doing a 3rd movie is a gamble, and I'd even go as far to say if they did, they shouldn't just give to James Gunn, even though he saved it. It's almost more interesting if they brought in a new director every time. A good product however? Not so sure.

@KelvTwelve - Having a different director for each movie could be an interesting gimmick...however, I would keep James Gunn, as "interesting" as it might be, I would play it safe (or as "safe" as you can play it with James Gunn).

I agree with everything else you said, calling this movie "The Suicide Squad" was a bad idea, because most people though it was a direct sequel, and since the previous movie was one of the worst cbms ever made, they just skipped this one...add to that the pandemic, the R rating, and the absurd budget, of course it was going to fail at the BO, but I didnt expect it to fail that hard.
I think Warner (or Discovery, or whatever) should re-release the movie on theathers, to taste the waters, most people who saw the movie on HBO Max would more than likely pay for a ticket.

We'll see, after what happened last week, I dont expect Discovery to greenlight a sequel...best case scenario, PG13 and a $100M budget, which I dont know James Gunn would agree with, he was already complaining about Disney giving him a "small" budget for Guardians 3 a few months ago (I guess Warner spoiled him with TSS, lol)

Waller is cool but...is she really a character worth giving a full show too?

she is a behind the scenes character, she doesn't get in on the action

Will it be a work place comedy about ARGUS with her as the straight man. That could be funny

The less you know about Waller the better. That is not to say you don't know certain things about her (her south side roots, political origins) but I really like her as a shadowy supporting character. You're in the dark about her motives.

Not sure if the character really warrants this but I will watch Viola Davis act her ass off for 8 hours.

One of the writers of Watchmen is promising, and Davis is a powerhouse, but this project is so weird lol

hopefully this is something nobody has faith in but surprises us.

like really Gunn made Peacemaker work, so this could work out

but REALLY don't see how Waller can support a show

Great actor, bad idea. Why won't they just let the DCEU die and start fresh in a few years?
