After three seasons, Stargirl brought its acclaimed run to a close with a show-stopping finale that delivered arguably one of the finest, if not the finest hours in the entire history of DC TV.

The episode followed the shocking reveals of last week's penultimate chapter, where we learned that the Ultra-Humanite had been inhabiting the body of Sylvester Pemberton (Joel McHale) for the past nine months and had also been working in tandem with the very much alive Icicle (Neil Jackson) and Dragon King (Nelson Lee).

We then pick up with Courtney (Brec Bassinger), Beth (Anjelika Washington), Yolanda (Yvette Monreal), Rick (Cameron Gellman), and Barbara (Amy Smart) beginning to suspect that something is off about Starman, but just when they start to piece it together, they're interrupted by a call from Cameron (Hunter Sansone), who invites them to the junkyard for a meeting between his family and the Justice Society of America.

At the meeting, they learn that "Starman" and Icicle have mended fences and want them to join forces in an effort to take down the Ultra-Humanite, and it seems like their plan is working when the young heroes learn about Pat Dugan's (Luke Wilson) apparent death. Fortunately, however, Pat shows up - in his S.T.R.I.P.E. armor - right on cue and reveals to everyone the deception before the JSA throw down with the Mahkents and the true Ultra-Humanite.

It's a thrilling battle between the two evenly matched sides, and once Courtney reclaims her staff, ultimately results in the defeat of the resurrected Injustice Society of America, costing Jordan and his mother Lily (Kay Galvin) their lives while the Ultra-Humanite is left brain-dead after being defeated in battle by the combined efforts of Stargirl and Stripesy.

Cameron and his grandfather Sofus (Jim France) - who was tired of the constant fighting - manage to survive, but the unimaginable loss of the day forces them to retreat and mend to their wounds alone, leaving Courtney heartbroken.

Meanwhile, the Young All-Stars of Cindy (Meg DeLacy), Mike (Trae Romano), Jakeem (Alkoya Brunson), and Thunderbolt (Seth Green) find themselves in their own final battle as they take on the Dragon King in a gorilla body, and just when all hope seems lost, Jakeem comes through with the wish of a lifetime that ends the Dragon King's reign of terror once and for all.

The final twenty minutes or so essentially serve as an extended epilogue, as we get to see the immediate aftermath of the battle, which leaves us with many intriguing teases for a promising future - that, unfortunately, we won't get to see unfold.

To recap all of the final moments,

  • The real Sylvester Pemberton is actually still alive and his brain has been kept in a hidden lab in the mountains.
  • Courtney is successful in tracking down The Gambler's daughter Becky and delivers her the note he left her
  • Rick and Beth both apologize to Beth's parents before the latter formally asks her parents to be her sidekicks.
  • Yolanda reaches out to her mom and promises to tell her the actual truth to strengthen their bond.
  • Pat and Barbara take Mike to reconnect with his mother Maggie.
  • Rick visits Solomon Grundy's grave one final time to bid farewell, disappointed that so many evildoers were able to come back from the dead, but not his friend. However, just as he gives up hope, Grundy punches through the ground, to Rick's delight.
  • Courtney is walking by the Mahkent house at night and finds Cameron there waiting, who asks for her help before they hug and that's a wrap on our series lead.
  • Jordan Mahkent is alive and well, hiding somewhere in Europe, but finds himself in a sticky situation when Artemis (Stella Smith) finally tracks him down and burns him alive.

To end the series, the show takes a ten-year time jump to 2032, where we catch up with The Shade (Jonathan Cake), who is now leading tours at the new JSA museum. Through his monologue, we learn:

  • Courtney is now Starwoman
  • Jade (Ysa Penarejo) and Obsidian (Tim Gabriel) have formally joined the JSA
  • Cindy is now Dragon Queen
  • Mike takes on the S.T.R.I.P.E. 2.0 mantle while his best friend is officially Jakeem Thunder
  • Cameron joined the JSA and is now going by Icicle
  • Artemis returned and is now a member of the JSA
  • Sand and Damage have joined the JSA
  • Wildcat, Hourman, and Dr. Mid-Nite are still active
  • Rick and Beth are getting married - with The Shade officiating their nuptials.
  • Solomon Grundy is also now a member of the JSA
  • The team retrieves Sylvester's brain and they're successful in bringing him back to life.
  • They saved the Seven Soldiers of Victory by defeating the Nebula Man.

Then, just as we think the story is over, Jay Garrick (John Wesley Shipp) zips into frame, telling The Shade, "Our adventures are not over," with the latter retorting, "Are they ever?

The Stargirl title card appears and we're left with a final message reading, "Never The End," and that's all she wrote. A premature, but satisfying and fitting conclusion for a pretty terrific series.

Relive the epic final battle and a few key scenes below:

Brec Bassinger headlines the series as Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl, with a supporting main cast featuring Yvette Monreal as Yolanda Montez/Wildcat, Anjelika Washington as Beth Chapel/Dr. Mid-Nite, Cameron Gellman as Rick Tyler/Hourman, Trae Romano as Mike Dugan, Hunter Sansone as Cameron Mahkent, Neil Hopkins as Larry Crock, Joy Osmanski as Paula Brooks, Amy Smart as Barbara Whitmore, Meg DeLacy as Cindy Burman/Shiv, Luke Wilson as Pat Dugan/S.T.R.I.P.E., and Joel McHale as Sylvester Pemberton/Starman.

The recurring cast consists of Jonathan Cake (Richard Swift/The Shade), Ysa Penarejo (Jennie-Lynn Hayden), Stella Smith (Artemis Crock), Alkoya Brunson (Jakeem Williams), Tim Gabriel (Todd Rice/Obsidian), Seth Green (Thunderbolt), and Keith David (Mister Bones).

Stargirl is now streaming on The CW and HBO Max.

Stargirl was honestly one of the best superhero shows on the CW. It respects the source material and never tried to appeal to anyone other than fans. It's a shame more people haven't seen it. I'm sad it's over, but better to end on a high note than have the quality suffer over time.

I’m glad they were able to come up with a satisfying ending, though with the forthcoming final lap of the Arrowverse with the last season of The Flash, it’s a shame we won’t get to see a cross-dimensional team-up between the ‘Justice League’ and the ‘Justice Society Infinity’.

Show deserved better. Came off much better than most of the CW stuff.

I haven’t seen this show yet but with DC films and shows being axed left and right, I’m glad it got to conclude on its own terms.

Somehow they managed to have a better finale just filming an alternate ending to their season finale, than any of the shows that actually got time to prepare a true finale.

Seriously

Smallville’s ending sucked, supergirl’s ending sucked. Arrow’s was pretty strong.

Hopefully season 3 isnt the end of superman and lois, that shows end will mark the end of my time watching cw/wb which i started back when smallville first premiered

@dracula - I remember Smallville's ending being the best thing I had seen on TV, but I was high on the hype. Looking back on it, it was rushed and super cheesy, even for 2011's standards. Arrow left me satisfied. Supergirl could've been better. I felt like they cheeped out on that last fight, but we gotta take the pandemic into account on that one.

@dracula - The alternate ending wasn't actually that much different except there were minor changes in the final scene's dialogue between Jay Garrick and Shade as Johns revealed in TVLine interviews and with TheFlash Podcast.

https://tvline.com/lists/stargirl-recap-series-finale-ending-explained-geoff-johns/ultra-humanite-starman-reveal/

https://theflashpodcast.com/interviews/exclusive-interview-brec-bassinger-geoff-johns-stargirl-series-finale/

The way he was talking about being sure the 2nd ending will one day leak or they will do it and talk about it more is almost like code for that he still has intentions to revive somehow the show. Which I'm all in.

Considering Jay, a speedster that can travel through time and dimensions but mostly time, showed up in the future (2031 is more accurate though, sorry on that KingPatel) asking for Shade to get ready and how Johns backed up Brec Bassinger's comment on the "insane" level of the S4 pitch, I got wibbly wobbly timmey wimmey vibes of Per Degaton.

Seeing that this show got a proper ending and judging from the comments on this site, maybe I should start watching this show.

Countless things got in my way in the last 6 months from posting my final thoughts about this series finale, mostly bad time management, but finally here I am. There was no way I was gonna let to end this thread possibly end up closing six months after it was created and the last Stargirl one ever (for now at least, plus I know it usually takes half a year for these to be wrapped and thus not letting someone post) without leaving my review about the S3 finale.

The opening flashback confirmed that Icicle was pretty much alive and going around for the last 9 months within the story's compressed timeline. Meaning that it didn't really take him that much of extended time to recover and regain his shape and form as well as his consciousness because in order to get to the S1 cliffhanger of "Sylvester" looking for Pat, which was on Christmas, and before Season 2 which happened 6 months afterwards and S1's final battle was in November. Thanks to that masked healing suit (courtesy of Dragon King likely since he was there with Jordan digging up Starman out from his grave) must've been how he quickly recovered. TDLR; this guy probably regenerated within some weeks before S1 ended, probably in the same month (November) when he was "killed" and had been planning all of this since December in order for "Starman" to show up in the show's freshman S1 cliffhanger.

Poor Sylvester with that said. Was awakened in good state thanks to the cosmic energy his body was imbueded with for the constant exposure to the Cosmic Staff (McNider did nail it with the theory) just to his cranium profaned and have his brain placed in some lab in the mountains (unlikely in Nebraska, must be somewhere else) in a loop of mental torture endlessly asking about Pat's wellbeing.

Liked how each of the JSA draw upon on each of the things Ultra-Humanite set out to do w hen he was "advicing" them: to distract them (Beth pushing her parents away), break them apart (Yolanda continuing to scrutinize Cindy who could've caught up on him), to weaken them (Rick developing an addiction to the limitless hourglass) and take Courtney's self-esteem as the owner of the Staff.

For setting out a dark mood in the first scenes with thunder and storms in the skies in the end it was just to make Pat's surprised return from his grave more dramatic. :P

Ultra-Humanite and Icicle's endgame was all about the power behind words and from those that say them. Anyone would believe and follow behind what Starman says and that proved to be right when he gave bad advices veiled as good intentions to the JSA. If that kept unchecked they surely could have turn him into "President Pemberton" as they mused back in the beginning. Using Sylvester's influence on the public to achieve all their goals.

And just in case Stargirl wasn't gonna buy anything that they were saying about how Pat "died" for refusing to work with them and going solo after Ultra-Humanite they did their homework and brought up plan B: Cameron's voice repeating their lies (while also being lied to) to convince Courtney that it was all true and they needed unity more than ever. When in doubt of your gaslightning not getting through the hero, use their significant other to get the job done.

Too bad that Pat showed up in S.T.R.I.P.E. to dispell all that bullshiet and rat out the secret of "Starman".

Ultra-Starman vs S.T.R.I.P.E. turned out to be so much fun. The new creative ways in which the Cosmic Staff was being used was bonkers: from a spinning wheel that served as a shield to block the rocket fist and later as a destructive disk to cut through a junk car that Pat threw at him really highlights how OP the Staff has been re-imagined thanks to the show to be one of DC's strongest and most versatile weapon. It truly does feel it is a cosmic tier artefact.

This sure wasn't Rick's best fight since he began to experience more drawbacks of using the hourglass without the limiter, pretty sure his slowed down movements felt like as if he was a rusty clock due to the sound effects during that scene. Long story short by the end of S3 is Cameron: 2, Rick: 0. :P

Beth and Sofus refusing to fight again and realizing they had to stop the fight was very in-character. Pretty sure that going forward in Season 4 they would've become very close allies/friends.

Lily's hatred to the JSA and thirst for revenge was her undoing that led her to die like the Wicked Witch. But I'm sure Sofus felt heart broken when she was threatening to kill him if he continued to refuse to fight.

Barbara honoring Tigress with using her crossbow to save Rick and Courtney from Icicle makes me think that she'll never leave the house without it, even when she's going to the American Dream. Heck, might as well have it under her pillow, yup.

The entire fight must've been all kinds of confused for Cameron and the more the battles raged on the more his world and the allegiances he believed in and thought that he could trust in began to shatter. First he relunctantly shows up with his family and "Starman" to convince Stargirl they had to work together in honor of her step-dad's memory, said step-dad then shows up in a huge mecha much to his bewilderment and "Starman" starts to fight Pat, his family then starts to fight Court and her friends with no sign of the albino ape called Ultra-Humanite nearby which they were supposed to team up in the first place, Hourman tells him he's being a tool of his dad who ice-chokes his ex-girlfriend asking her to pledge loyalty to him and finally her mom, whom her dad worked together at the American Dream, shows up shooting an arrow at him who then starts to go on the most impassioned yet creepy fixation ramble he's ever heard him spout while preparing to kill her for not returning his feelings.

No wonder Cameron right there turned against his old man after listening to all of that and seeing how unhinged his true colors were. Got a good look of what his grandpa said of how his anger and grief killed the person he was. But as fan of his character it was rewarding to finally see Icicle Jr. rebel against Icicle, which is staying true to the comic book counterpart. Plus I love how the first thing Cameron did at the start of the series was stand up for a female character was being harassed by painting on her locker a flower to cover up the mean word on it (Yolanda) and in the S3 finale that is what he once again did. Chivalrous till the end.

I sure would've liked to see more of Cindy vs Dragon King in Humanite's body but the budget was wisely spent more on S.T.R.I.P.E. but Jakeem's wish was actually nicely worded and Ito got what he deserved. But Jesus for a moment I thought that Thunderbolt had Beebo-fied him. Closed enough still. XD

The moment Courtney reasserted her command and worthyness on the Cosmic Staff was a nod to a cover as a matter of fact, it landed well.

Pat won by a brutal K.O. against "Starman" with that rock, damn.

Stargirl and Icicle Jr taking turns to beat up Icicle had to be the definition of power couple goals until Cameron went to deliver the final blow on him to make him retreat with his tail between his legs. How I wished they hadn't cancelled the show because the amount of tag team these two teens could've had going into S4 and forward as teammates would've been nothing short but epic.

Although the fact Jordan could actually flee like that after his physical form was destroyed just made me wish more to know about the Mahkents and the roots of their ice powers because that family was definitely not metahuman enhanced, so to speak.

I totally got the decision Cameron made at that point of the story, he wasn't in the right place emotionally and in many other ways. Compared to the previous wrap ups in the battles waged in S1 and S2 finales, this one ended in a bittersweet note for Courtney for not being able to help him. Not much joy to bask in in the aftermath of victory.

Sweet moment betweent Pat and Court after in their basement after Cosmo happily went back to it's good ol' crate. In my mind it chose it over the pretty showcase because that crate was where Courtney always went to look after it when it was recovering from it's first encounter with Eclipso. Pat sharing he survived thanks to a tip the real Sylvester taught him back in the day was a good way to honor him after everything. Plus the reveal that he did listen to all that she said in standing up for him against the fake one was a good S3 way to end their story, since it's still hard for Court in that age to be completely honest with him of how she feels about him, but it works.

And what I dislike so much about the unfair and tone-deaf cancelation is how as S3 wraps up several character arcs from the start (whether they felt rushed or not) is that it was also leaving the same amount of doors open for new journeys to begin: when and how did they find Sylvester's brain in one of Dragon King's labs and restore him? What was it gonna be now that Grundy came back to life and what role would the zombie have in the JSA as that 10 years sneak peek into the future showed us? (I bet Grundy in S4 could utter some words in the 1st person) How would Rick's rehab be like after he finally put down the hourglass in the end? Yolanda's leap of faith in giving her family a 2nd chance? How would Cindy handle her still on-going transformation since the sneak peek also had her take the mantle of Dragon Queen? That only means she had to embrace her scales and with Dragon King in Ultra-Humanite's body trapped in a plushy toy the chances of finding a cure are gone. How would Artemis be like after killing Icicle? We already saw what taking a life did to Wildcat so no way we would skip over how emotionally-wise she was post murdering him. Would Beth's parents at last stick to the landing in helping her?

So yeah, tons of new stories and character arcs were presented to us as Season 3 was concluding because the fact is that it's in the final scene itself between Shade and Jay that there was supposed to be a slight change in the dialogue that was going to launch us to S4. An alternate ending that hasn't yet been released but I hope Johns can one day share it with us especially if it's possible to bring back the show under the DC Elseworlds label. Gunn would have to be obtuse and tone-deaf to not let it happen.

Especially now that in last month it was confirmed by the cast what exactly would've been the S4 storyline and the whole reason why that Titans cameo/small crossover was done in the first place. The story Johns pitch them that Brec Bassinger described as "insane" and would "be on another league" (I'm paraphrasing in this part) and why they all really wanted the show to be renewed so they could tell that story: Multiverse crossovers.

Goddamn you Nexstar AND Zaslav for selling The CW broadcast network to fellow penny pinchers that were never interested in at least not completely ditching their entire audience until this show was ready to properly go. Sigh.

And last but not least: how would the dynamic would've looked like for Courtney and Cameron going into S4 as he finally accepted her help to heal. They really wanted to pull on our heartstrings at the last sec, but it sure worked.
