THE SANDMAN Featurette Gives Us A First Look At Some Behind-The-Scenes Footage

A full teaser was probably wishful thinking, but Netflix has released a behind-the-scenes featurette for its adaptation of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, and it's a must-watch for fans of the comic series.

We were promised a first look at The Sandman as part of Netflix's "Geeked Week," and the streamer has now released a brief behind-the-scenes featurette which opens the door to Neil Gaiman's incredibly detailed world.

Though we don't get to see any of the main cast members in costume, the video does feature plenty of concept art and props, including a first look at the designs for Morpheus' helm, pouch and ruby, Matthew the Raven, and more. If you look closely, you'll also spot a first glimpse of the character design for the Dream King himself on an artboard.

Check out the featurette below, which also includes interview snippets with stars Tom Sturridge (Dream) and Gwendoline Christie (Lucifer).

The 11-episode first season of The Sandman is expected to adapt the first arc of the Vertigo comics series, "Preludes and Nocturnes," which finds Dream captured by a black magician and held prisoner for the better part of a century. When he finally escapes, he sets about recovering three very important items, encountering Lucifer, John Constantine, Doctor Destiny, Martian Manhunter and more on his travels.

Gaiman is developing the show along with David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg. No premiere date has been set.

This looks fantastic and Gaiman is right, those sets are intricate, huge, and they look amazing. Like he genuinely looks so happy to see his story getting made into film in this featurette

Exiting stuff. I hope this doesn't turn out like another Jupiter's Legacy because that too looked like a very promising adaptation.

Those set pieces and the detail they are putting into this have made me a lot more comfortable with this now. Can’t wait.

Waited a life time for this and the subtext is it'll be adapted with an adult edge at last.

Neil Gaiman is the anti-Alan Moore when it comes to adaptations of his work.

Two observations on the not-so-positive, not-so-overwhelmingly-ecstatic side of things:

1. Sandman had pants on in the concept art when he was naked in the comic (the one where they showed how accurate it was to the comics panel). This doesn't bode well for either Despair being naked or even the general adult nature of the Vertigo comic.
They want Sandman to be Game of Thrones level big (or even Breaking Bad before it) they can't be afraid to show it as it is in the comics.

2. They retroactively added gender pronouns to the first character sheet and Gwendoline Christie's Lucifer was "She/Her". Makes me wonder, do they mean the actress or the character?

I mean Tilda Swinton played a male Gabriel in Constantine. But Lucifer does look very female in the concept art. Don't see why an actress can't play a male character.

I stopped watching Netflix after they cancelled their Marvel shows I was furious, but this is definitely gonna bring me back I love Neil Gaiman's Sandman and hope this show lives up to the comics.

This getting Gaiman's approval is definitely a good thing. Hopefully it'll be just more than just a show ''by the fans, for the fans'', because I don't really consider myself a fan per se with this project.
