In January, it was reported that New Line was close to losing the film rights on Y: The Last Man, and now we can report that they did indeed lose them. Earlier today, Dan Trachtenberg ("Portal: No Escape"), who was hired to direct the project, tweeted a informative message when asked about its current status.

From there, Slash Film contacted Dan to see if he would provide some more details.

Dan Trachtenberg on his version:
Truly- I was excited to make an ADVENTURE movie, with swashbuckle, that was fun and funny but had something to say. Which is something that is distinctly BKV. Having real, true, honest ,people stuff amidst the big, fun, action stuff. We were in many ways quite faithful to the comic, though some characters were combined and some events re-arranged and some brief moments of action we dug into to create bigger action/adventure sequences.

On the script:
The script was essentially the first two trades. Taking inspiration from the original Star Wars (Episode 4)- we wanted to tell a complete story…but not the whole story.  Hoping that, in success, we could get tell the rest of our serialized adventure.

Influences:
Raiders of the Lost Ark was referenced a lot. Midnight Run and Big Trouble in Little China were referenced a lot.  Willow and Ladyhawke I may have referenced a little too often…

Any hope it gets made in the future:
I’m not sure Brian will ever want to do anything more with it and I’m not sure that he needs to.

Y The Last Man is the dystopian science fiction comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra published by Vertigo beginning in 2002. It focuses on only man to survive the apparent simultaneous death of every male mammal on Earth. The 60-issue series was repackaged in book form and the series won five Eisner Awards.

The film is being produced by Benderspink and David Goyer, with Sam Brown and David Neustadter overseeing for New Line. Trachtenberg is separately attached to helm Crime of the Century, the Universal film which has Chris Morgan producing. That’s being scripted by Daniel Kunka. - Deadline

Good riddance. Let's hope the same occurs with Shazam. These properties deserve more than the mediocrity that is known as New Line Cinema.

Ya'll do know that New Line made all of The Lord of The Rings and Hobbits movies right, so just wanted to put that out their before anyone says something they'll regret.

@Batman52

New Line was also behind Blade and Blade II which MANY people on this site hold in high regard.

This is sad news. My only hope is it will come out on HBO instead of being turned into a movie. Y: The Last Man is ripe for an incredible live action story and I hope it will become a reality soon.

Y? The Last Man to work on this project (Dan Trachtenberg) sounded dedicated. Oh well.

Sadly not gonna happen, but it's hard to sell the story anyway. It's a masterpiece but it's really dark sometimes, with the pussyfication of the studios on make everything PG13 it probably would lost their essence.

Damn, love the comic series so far (I haven't finished all of it yet). I would rather see a mini series on HBO or Netflix

At least the rights are with the creators and considering Shia LaBEouf went insane, probably a good thing he never ended up being in it.

MAybe they could make a really cool TV show out of it now instead... THen they wouldn't have to try cram everything into a movie.

Man that sucks. I guess

I really hope Brian lets someone else take a crack at this.

Personally, I've always thought this would make a better TV series.

Didn't Seth Rogen say months ago in an interview that if he and Evan Goldberg couldn't nab the rights to Preacher that they were going to pursue Y: instead?

If only it was Spidey of F4. I'm fine with X-Men and Avengers being separate I also think it's a bit too late to introduce them into the MCU.
