The tradition on HBO's Game of Thrones is that each season's penultimate episode is the one which receives the biggest budget, has the most plot revelations and typically has the highest body count. One of the series' greatest penultimate episodes was the siege of King’s Landing in the second season which was helmed by Neil Marshall. The penultimate episode of the forthcoming season 4 will once again be directed by Marshall, who spoke with Irish Film & Television Network about what that ep has in store for viewers. It's a very lenghty interview so below you'll find just the highlights but if you wish to read the entire transcript, you'll need to click the link above.

-"What I can say is that it’s a huge episode - a huge production. As far as I know the episode hasn’t been named yet but someone online suggested it might be called ‘Castle Black’ but all I know is that it’s called episode nine! It’s kind of the same as ‘Blackwater’, in a sense, in that these episodes are bigger than most of my films! They’re on the same scale as something like ‘Centurion’, if not bigger."

-"There are a few beheadings in there, as is my wont! And yeah, we got to blow some people up, set people on fire and do quite a few high falls. There’s a lot of very physical action and a lot of fighting - sword fights and physical fights. We pack quite a lot of stuff in there."

In the interview with IFTN, Marshall also discusses his work on the Troll Hunter remake and Michael Bay's pirate drama, Black Sails. Again, you can read the full transcript at the Irish Film & Television Network.

"Season 4 of Game of Thrones was formally commissioned by HBO on April 2, 2013 after viewer ratings showed a substantial increase between the second and third season openers. Due to the sheer length of the third novel, which is roughly 1.5 times the size of the first novel, the events of "A Storm of Swords" was split between season 3 and the upcoming season 4. However, Season 4 may also contain some material from the fourth and fifth books as some of those events happen concurrently to events taking place in "A Storm of Swords." In the wake of the Red Wedding, how does the North pick up the pieces and with their greatest enemy seemingly crushed, where does that leave the Lannisters. Daenerys Targaryen now has an army but is she ready to take back her homeland. Does Jon Snow turn south to seek revenge or remember his duty along the Wall?"

Absolutely one of the best shows on TV right now, if not THE best. Can't wait til next season, it feels so far away

Season 4 will be different from previous seasons in a lot of ways. Lots of big things happening with lots of implications for the future.

Having only recently seen all 3 seasons, after the Finale of Spartacus I was expecting Joffrey to be a lot worse, since people said he was even more despicable than Tiberius, whenever i see Joffrey on-screed I LoL at how pathetic he is

Its going to suck when they run out of books and have no ending because George has been too busy working on the series to finish the last two books.

@MAC, I loved that battle but to say it's better than any battle in LotR is ridiculous. The ONLY reason we get those battles in GoT is BECAUSE of the LotR books and movies. Besides, the LotR movies had a much bigger budget which led to fully-realized, immersive, well-structured battles that set the bar high for any fantasy-epic battles in the future. The Battle of Blackwater in GoT was like 1/5 of what it was in the books because they didn't have enough money to make it look like it did in the book.

I hear what you're saying MAC.

But The Silmarillion will never be made into a movie or trilogy of movies with PJ at the helm. 100% guaranteed. They'd be better off adapted into a TV series like GoT. There's just way too much material to cover.

The Tolkien family despises what PJ did with LOTR and especially the Hobbit, and while I (mostly) disagree with them, it's ridiculously hard to blame them. I mean, of course nothing is going to live up to what JRR Tolkien wrote, but PJ did take a lot of liberties and changed things that became completely at odds with the spirit of the books.

@MAC I love Westeros and Ennos but Middle Earth by far. I also like Shannara which is another Fantasy series better then Westeros and Ennos.
