The tradition on HBO's Game of Thrones is that each season's penultimate episode is the one which receives the biggest budget, has the most plot revelations and typically has the highest body count. One of the series' greatest penultimate episodes was the siege of King’s Landing in the second season which was helmed by Neil Marshall. The penultimate episode of the forthcoming season 4 will once again be directed by Marshall, who spoke with Irish Film & Television Network about what that ep has in store for viewers. It's a very lenghty interview so below you'll find just the highlights but if you wish to read the entire transcript, you'll need to click the link above.
-"What I can say is that it’s a huge episode - a huge production. As far as I know the episode hasn’t been named yet but someone online suggested it might be called ‘Castle Black’ but all I know is that it’s called episode nine! It’s kind of the same as ‘Blackwater’, in a sense, in that these episodes are bigger than most of my films! They’re on the same scale as something like ‘Centurion’, if not bigger."
-"There are a few beheadings in there, as is my wont! And yeah, we got to blow some people up, set people on fire and do quite a few high falls. There’s a lot of very physical action and a lot of fighting - sword fights and physical fights. We pack quite a lot of stuff in there."
In the interview with IFTN, Marshall also discusses his work on the Troll Hunter remake and Michael Bay's pirate drama, Black Sails. Again, you can read the full transcript at the

"Season 4 of Game of Thrones was formally commissioned by HBO on April 2, 2013 after viewer ratings showed a substantial increase between the second and third season openers. Due to the sheer length of the third novel, which is roughly 1.5 times the size of the first novel, the events of "A Storm of Swords" was split between season 3 and the upcoming season 4. However, Season 4 may also contain some material from the fourth and fifth books as some of those events happen concurrently to events taking place in "A Storm of Swords." In the wake of the Red Wedding, how does the North pick up the pieces and with their greatest enemy seemingly crushed, where does that leave the Lannisters. Daenerys Targaryen now has an army but is she ready to take back her homeland. Does Jon Snow turn south to seek revenge or remember his duty along the Wall?" | |
