GAME OF THRONES Showrunners Talk Candidly About Issues With HBO; Hoped To End Series With Movie Trilogy

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have reflected on clashing with executives at HBO over making smartphone-friendly episodes and share their dashed hopes to make a movie trilogy...

Game of Thrones' final season was nothing if not divisive, leading to petitions for a remake. While it remains unclear how much George R.R. Martin's last book in the Song of Ice and Fire series will differ, he is thought to have given showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss a rough outline of his plans.

Even so, the death of Daenerys Targaryen and Bran Stark's ascension to the Iron Throne remain among the show's least popular decisions, and new details on Benioff and Weiss' original hopes for Game of Thrones could go some way in explaining why season 8 didn't work.

A new Wall Street Journal profile (via SFFGazette.com) confirms the duo did indeed plan to end the story with three movies instead of 13 episodes split in two. You may recall Martin first mentioning this way back in 2020.

According to Benioff, HBO executives had no interest in bringing Game of Thrones to theaters as their goal is to bring more eyes to the cable network, not earn box office revenue. He was reminded of that when they curtly told him HBO stands for "Home Box Office" and not "Away Box Office."

The piece sheds new light on Benioff and Weiss' decision to walk away from HBO for a deal with Netflix.

"Benioff and Weiss, who have been friends since grad school, weren’t crazy about HBO’s then-owners, AT&T, whose executives once asked whether 'Game of Thrones' could be shot vertically so it would fit on your phone. The company also openly discussed the idea of snackable mini-episodes of the series."

"Dysfunction kills more projects than anything else, whether it’s interpersonal dysfunction or institutional dysfunction," Weiss told the publication. Benioff added, "When you sign a five-year deal with a company, you want that company to be stable so you can be left alone to do your work and not have to worry about it being bought by the phone company. Finding the smoothest ride in the ocean was key."

We're not exactly shocked they wanted out with executives pushing them for episodes of Game of Thrones made specifically for smartphones, not television or theaters.

Earlier this year, Benioff and Weiss were asked if they'd have done anything differently with the hit series which has since spawned a prequel series in House of the Dragon. Their answer was undeniably unexpected.

"One thing I know I wish we could have done is there’s the character Mord the Jailer," Benioff said. "It was a mistake not bringing Mord the Jailer back into it," Weiss adds. "We always talked about doing it.”

"And we had the scene for it. There’s a scene set in a tavern. Was it Brienne or The Hound?" he continued. "But we realized too late that Mord could have owned the tavern. We could have had that actor in the background acting exactly the way he did as a jailer, except now as a small-business owner. It was just such an obvious, no-brainer, day-after idea."

Do you think HBO should have made a Game of Thrones movie trilogy in place of season 8? And would those have really been any better if the ending was unchanged? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

So because they asked them to shoot the show so that it would fit on a smartphone they said f@ck you and this made them ruin the show? Nothing said in this interview should be a reason why they could not have done a good ending. Just two a-holes.

So it could've been even worse? Good to know. Three movies instead of 13 episodes would've rushed it even more, and being shot vertically would've made it unwatchable altogether.

Think they made a good point about HBO and what it stands for. Now if only they just took the time to make two (or even three) 10 episode seasons.

@bkmeijer1 - I don’t think there was a chance of more seasons regardless, wasn’t the cast also ready to move on?

@Taonrey - I don't know actually, but it wouldn't surprise me. Although maybe that was due to the already mediocre season 6

@bkmeijer1 - show was running its course and a couple actors were getting other roles so I wouldn’t be surprised. Actors in general seem to want to move on or take a break from tv. Probably because it’s more time consuming than movies.

@Taonrey - yeah, that does make sense. Think Game of Thrones, both on- and off-screen, probably took its toll on a lot of the actors.

I think they should've just streamlined the story if they wanted to wrap it up, because season those last 13 episodes told three seasons worth of story imo.

I'm sure zaslov would have somehow made it even worse. Two terrible owners back to back..

It’s very rare that I agree with executives over creative but finishing the show in a movie trilogy would’ve been terrible. As far as I’m concerned these guys owe their entire careers to Martin. Everything they’ve made without his source material has been terrible to mediocre at best. They’re hacks.

@BreakTheCode - I agree, it works better narratively as a show even if it is cinematic.

They are responsible, nobody else.

Starting a story adaptation before the source material had reached its conclusion was a risky move. It’s not surprising that the worst aspects of the series came after they ran out of source material.

@NoAssemblyReqd - I get what you’re saying but game of thrones source material is never going to end. Also WB did it with Harry Potter so maybe they thought they could do it with Game of thrones. Now obviously the difference is JK did finish HP before 4 years before its theater conclusion.

Yeah...nothing these clowns say will ever excuse the terrible mess of a series finale they delivered. Why were they so stuck on three movies anyway as opposed to 2-3 more seasons containing 10 episodes to wrap up the story?

The issue for the show is not backroom politics, it's on screen decisions, narrative missteps because they chose to rush the series.

Considering HBO is still trying to reach into that Game of Thrones well, i get the feeling they would've wanted another season which is what the show needed.

Season 8 should've ended the Night King conflict and then season 9 should've been the fall of Dany.

Good grief can they make themselves any less more face punchable!?

I've seen fan videos with better outlines to concluding the story properly that worked better than what they two chuds produced in the later seasons.

A trilogy of films would at most be 9 hours. Season 6 and 7 is around 14 hours. Considering how rushed and poorly written 6&7 were, I doubt less time dedicated to the characters and story would’ve been the way to go…

They ran out of runway.

It's not a coincidence that the stuff adapted from the books was good and the stuff adapted from notes was not.

Simple as that really. Biggest TV show on Earth had to make an emergency crash landing.

Translated: We didnt get to do whatever we wanted so here is a bunch of excuses.

Does that explain the literal drop in quality year over year without the source material? These guys were never it. Sadly, if Martin got his book done, it probably would have been better. Just a tragic end for one of the best pieces of TV ever made. Just goes to show, you can never rest on your laurels. HBO probably should have just gotten someone else to continue the series. I cant recall if there was any contractual issue that it could only be them or not but Im sure that could have been worked out one way or another.
