There's been a big shake-up in the House of the Dragon, as co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik has parted ways with the Game of Thrones prequel series just two episodes into its first season.

The first episode was HBO's most-watched series premiere of all time, and the second instalment drew in even more viewers. This prompted the network to announce an early season 2 renewal, but the show will go on without one of the people who's been integral to its success.

According to THR (via SFFGazette.com), Sapochnik decided to move on after "pouring an exhausting three years of effort" into the project. Co-creator Ryan Condal will now serve as the show’s sole showrunner and continue to work closely with co-creator George R.R. Martin.

“Working within the Thrones universe for the past few years has been an honor and a privilege, especially spending the last two with the amazing cast and crew of House of the Dragon,” Sapochnik said in a statement. “I am so proud of what we accomplished with season one and overjoyed by the enthusiastic reaction of our viewers. It was incredibly tough to decide to move on, but I know that it is the right choice for me, personally and professionally. As I do so, though, I am deeply comforted to know that Alan will be joining the series. He’s someone I’ve known and respected for a long time, and I believe this precious series could not be in safer hands. I am so glad to remain a part of the HBO and House of the Dragon family and, of course, I wish Ryan and his team success and all the best with season two and beyond.”

This is sure to be a big loss for House of the Dragon, but HBO has enlisted another Game of Thrones vet in Alan Taylor, who will serve as an executive producer and direct multiple episodes season two episodes.

“It’s a pleasure and an honor to be back at HBO, immersing myself in the world of the Targaryens. I look forward to working closely with Ryan as House of the Dragon grows into its second season. Ryan, Miguel and George have launched an extraordinary story, in a rich and fascinating world. Returning to Westeros will be a huge undertaking and I’m looking forward to the challenge," said Taylor.

The third episode of House of the Dragon airs this Sunday. VFX shots are still being completed for season one, but scripts for season two are currently being written.

I still haven't seen the first two episodes but I heard it isn't bad.

@marvel72 - you should watch them and form your own opinion and not rely on Internet strangers to dictate personal decisions (insert: irony of statement)

Well this is for the next season which was confirmed not too long ago, so I guess with seeing how the rest of this first season goes could determine how much a loss this is.

First two episodes have shown that he's done a really good job so far. Alan has some shoes to fill.

@Kumkani - Alan Taylor has directed some pretty great Game of Thrones episodes, like the last two episodes of Season 1, so the show should be fine. Plus Miguel Sapochnik is staying on as a producer, so it’s not like he’s completely leaving.

First two episodes were good, but surprisingly, I enjoyed the first two episodes of Rings of Power exceedingly more.

@PlusUltra - I can see it. This is happy to try and follow the grooves already carved by Thrones, including using the same opening music. It's all high-quality stuff but it hasn't pushed the envelope yet, and it needs to have some decent long-term plotting in place other than just "surprise you're dead." At least Rings is going its own thing and, well, in terms of visuals that series is already schooling movies.

Ryan Condal wrote both the first two episodes whilst working hand in hand with George RR Martin. Hes still the showrunner on this show. I'm not too concerned over this. Sounds like a power struggle more than anything. Shows been awesome thus far.
