HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Viewership Up From Premiere As Controversial "Courtship" Scene Faces Backlash - SPOILERS

More people tuned in for the second episode of House of the Dragon than they did for the record-breaking premiere, but "The Rogue Prince" featured a scene that made a lot of viewers uncomfortable.

Almost 10 million people (9.99 million, to be exact) tuned in to witness the beginning of the end of House Targaryen last week, officially making the first episode of House of the Dragon the network's most-watched series premiere of all time.

According to Variety (via SFFGazette.com), the second instalment, "The Rogue Prince," actually drew in more viewers with 10.2 million, but many of them took issue with a scene that's been deemed "creepy" and "uncomfortable."

The premiere shocked viewers with a graphic, disturbing birthing sequence, and this week's episode has also come in for some backlash for a scene which showed King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) taking a little stroll with one of his new suitors.

What's wrong with that, you may ask? Well, the girl in question is 12-years-old!

Viserys’ cousin Rhaenys (Eve Best) offered the King the hand of her daughter, Lady Laena Velaryon (Nova Foueillis-Mose), in an attempt to strengthen her family's position. Viserys was visibly uncomfortable at the prospect of marrying a child, but even the mere suggestion was enough to stir up quite a bit of outrage online, and his actual choice of bride didn't help matters.

Towards the end of the episode, Viserys announces that he is to marry Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey), much to the dismay of his daughter Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock). Alicent is 15.

The episode concludes with Laena's father Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) forging an alliance with Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), which may not end well for the King or his daughter.

It's worth noting that George R.R. Martin's novels are set in a world where this kind of thing is common (Daenerys is quite a bit younger in the first book than she was in the show, for example), but many have argued that a fictional story set in a fantasy world shouldn't be beholden to the darker aspects of our own history.

@Humperdoo - it’s Woke to overlook the fact that the scene is MEANT to be uncomfortable, precisely because it’s highlighting how wrong the concept it is.

Wokeness is short sightedness

A lot of themes in Martins books are a reflection of things that were common practices in the real world. That being said, this is still a fictional story that doesn't portray anything inappropriate so what is the uproar here?

So it's controversial because game of thrones is being game of thrones?

Look, the whole point of game of thrones is to add realism to fantasy. I.e., reap people in a world of magic. And guess what? Pedophiles exist. And unfortunately they sometimes are in positions of power. Just presenting it doesn't mean the show condones this behavior.

Yeah, it was creepy and uncomfortable scene. That was kind of the point. If this franchise is meant to reflect historical medieval society, it can't ignore the negative aspects either. Showing something doesn't mean it's being endorsed (can't believe I have to specify this point in this day and age). As unpleasent as the thought is, eras of the past did not share the values and virtues of our time. Or have you ever wondered where the term 'progress' actually come from. If you look at historical depiction in media about far-past eras and think it's something we should aim towards, you're watching a fairy tale.

Gross, but it’s HBO. That’s what they do and it’s obviously working. People pretend to be offended but keep watching. Never liked GOT because of how it treated and depicted women. All for shock value to seem edgy.

This is all to do about Nothing! Incest and marrying very young still continue to this day in some countries. Has anyone ever heard of the medieval times and the inbred family in England as well as other royals in other countries? yeah....this is so stupid. After 10 years of GOT...they want to bitch and complain. Go smoke a joint! You'll feel better!

Are you [frick]ing serious?

The Variety article that you use as a source is only a short piece talking about the increase in viewership and doesn't even mention this 'controversy' anywhere. The words "creepy" and "uncomfortable" where completely made up by you and are never used in the source.

What is the point of this article? If you wanted to do an episode recap or opinion piece about how the episode creeped you out, then do just do that.

Can you just report the news as it is?

I just searched Viserys on Twitter and only saw memes.

@RorMachine - So where are your sources for this then? You had a source for the viewership numbers in the Variety article. Where are they for the social media reactions.

I'm sorry but I have to question your intentions. The SFFGazette.com article also mentioned here mostly talks about viewership, but when it addresses this so-called controversy, it's just another SFFGazette article with no source.

Which tells me its really one of two things:

1. You know this site has an "anti-woke" crowd problem nobody wants to deal with, so you're trying to engage them (which is working according to some comments on this very article.

OR

2. You're just trying to drive traffic to SFFGazette.com

@regularmovieguy - OK, well here's just the first article I saw when I searched Laena.

https://screenrant.com/house-dragon-season-1-viserys-laena-fan-reactions/?utm_content=buffer0ab27&utm_medium=Social-Distribution&utm_source=SR-TW&utm_campaign=SR-TW

That has some of the reactions, there are many more.
Kumkani
Kumkani - 8/30/2022, 10:52 AM
@RorMachine - None of those reactions point to the episode being controversial. They're all reacting accordingly because they understand that the scene was meant to depict an outdated and predatory societal norm. Using the word "controversial" implies that people disliked the episode because of that subplot, which isn't the case according to the reactions in the Screenrant article.

Even Screenrant acknowledges what the scene was meant to represent, as evidenced by this quote:

"This unsettling Laena subplot [...] ties back to House of the Dragon's biggest themes. The series' creative team has repeatedly explained the fantasy show intends to explore misogyny and the patriarchy on a grand scale, and Corlys pushing Laena forward only highlights how eager some men are to further their own interests at the expense of the women around them."

Your own article can't even reach that conclusion, and states that many have argued that a fictional story set in a fantasy world shouldn't be beholden to the darker aspects of our own history" (again, with no source).

At the very least, I'm asking you to do your due diligence as a news writer.

@RorMachine -

Dude, looking for the first random article you can find after getting called out just proves @Kumkani’s point here more, especially since half of the Twitter reactions in the very article you just mentioned are basically memes about the scene, not outrage.
