THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER: Read Sam Wilson's Incredible Speech From Today's Season Finale

Today's episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier served as a bold step forward for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we thought you'd like to read, and be inspired by, Sam Wilson's speech in full...

As expected, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier ended its first season with Sam Wilson becoming Captain America. Now, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a Black man wielding that iconic shield, a bold step forward for this shared world that promises to be a game-changer for Phase 4 and beyond.

After the Flag-Smashers are defeated, Sam meets with the members of the GRC and is thanked for his role in stopping Karli Morgenthau and her group of "terrorists," the Flag Smashers.

"You have to stop calling them terrorists," Cap responds. "Your peacekeeping troops carrying weapons are forcing millions of people into settlements around the world, right? What do you think those people are going to call you? These labels...terrorist, refugee, thug. They're often used to get around the question, 'Why?'"

When it's pointed out that Sam has no idea how complicated the situation is, he responds: "You know what, you're right. And that's a good thing. We finally have a common struggle now. Think about that. For once, all the people who've been begging, and I mean literally begging for you to feel how hard any given day is, now you know. How did it feel to be helpless? If you can remember what it felt like to be helpless and face a force so powerful it could erase half the planet, you would know that you're about to have the exact same impact. This isn't about easy decisions, Senator."

When the Senator reiterates that Sam doesn't understand, it's then the hero really strikes a chord.

"I'm a Black man carrying the stars and stripes. What don't I understand? Every time I pick this thing up, I know there are millions of people out there who are going to hate me for it. Even now, here, I feel it. The stares, the judgement, and there's nothing I can do to change it, yet I'm still here. No super serum, no blonde hair or blue eyes. The only power I have is that I believe we can do better. We can't demand that people step up if we don't meet them halfway. You control the banks. Shit, you can move borders. You can knock down a forest with an email; you can move a million people with a phonecall. The question is, who's in the room with you when you're making those decisions? Is it the people you're going to impact? Or is it just more people like you?

"I mean, this girl died trying to stop you and no one has stopped for one second to ask, 'Why?' You've gotta do better, Senator. You've got to step up. Because if you don't, the next Karli will and you don't want to see 2.0. People believed in her cause so much that they helped her defy the strongest governments in the world. Why do you think that is? Look, you people have just as much power as an insane God or a misguided teenager. The question you have to ask yourself is, 'How are you going to use it?'"

We think it's fair to say the shield is in good hands with Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson/Captain America.

If you've not watched the finale of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier yet, we strongly recommend watching this speech as the atcor's delivery is absolutely phenomenal.

It was a bit long and overdone, but I felt the show earned something like that.

@KWilly - it needed to be said.

@Spidey91 - Most definitely. One of the deepest moments the MCU has ever had.

@KWilly - Yeah a few seconds too long, but agreed that it was needed. Here here!

I hope he gets his own movie.

@Jaykay21 - I don't even need a movie. I just need a S2. 6 more episodes can tell a story more fleshed out, than a 2 hour movie.

@KWilly - this feels far more earned than Scarlet Witch's ending!

@KWilly - well if there's a season 2 it won't be Sam Wilson's falcon..if he's now Captain America. Also I get the feeling Bucky's no longer going by his moniker.

But yeah a second season with those characters would be nice.. but I'm still not used to digesting the Marvel stuff on a weekly basis.

@elcapitan - I believe SW’s ending was drastically changed by Covid. Listening to interviews with the director, looks like a lot of stuff was removed. Monica & the kids were supposed to take on Fietro, & a demonic Mr Scratchy. He mentioned Covid delays. Wouldn’t surprise me if it comes out the final episode had to make a lot of sacrifices to hit the deadline

I still feel that if characters sympathized with Karli, they also need to sympathize with Ultron. Both were extreme on what they wanted to accomplish but both wanted to eliminate the bad people of the world and rebuild one with a One world and One people concept.

Sam Wilson really is a great Captain America. He’s got the right combination of strength, compassion, and being inspirational. John Walker was a very shaded of grey anti-hero character but Sam really does carry on the legacy of Steve Rogers very well.

I liked his relationship with Karli. Because yes, she’s a terrorist, but also she’s got the sad backstory and is really just a child so her story was tragic to see. Like Sam thought he could save her and kept trying but she was just continuing to descend and spiral down worse and worse as more of her friends died and the pressure kept getting worse until we’re at a point where she knows she’s going to die by the time this is over and it’s made her completely stop caring about others and only about how she’s going to be remembered.

John Walker’s arc in this episode is interesting.

He came in as a anti-hero, wanting to get cold blooded revenge, but in the end he made the choice to save people and be a hero and let go of his rage, which has been one of his two biggest flaws on the show: rage and ego. He seemingly after watching the speech Sam gave has decided Sam will probably be a better Captain America than he ever was.

Walker has always been a character who is really good at following the orders of the government. Last episode he had his big courtroom speech about how his superiors made him. He had some real resentment for his superiors. He was a free agent for most of this episode . But, he gets to work for the government again at the end of the episode as a literal “USAgent”. So he sees getting a government job back as a big win for himself and his wife, hey, maybe he got his benefits back too. But he’s being set up, most people think, for a Thunderbolts/ Dark Avengers type thing. So he’s gotten himself in a role that’s totally more suited for him than Captain America. USAgent doesn’t have the pressures and baggage the Cap title does, there’s less pressure to be perfect, and following orders is what he does best and it’s right in the name. He seems to have what he wanted, but I’m wondering, once he’s on the Thunderbolts/ Dark Avengers surrounded by former supervillains and shady characters is he going to be following the orders of nefarious Norman Osborn or Secretary Ross or is he going to try to do the right thing outside of that? He’s being set up for an interesting story.

It was a bit long and repetitive, but given current events, not a surprise. Still a good message.
Was anyone else hoping for Sam doing one of these at the end?
