INHUMANS Cast Respond To Negative Reviews; Claim The Series Is Only "Loosely" Based On The Comics

Early word on Marvel's Inhumans is not good and now the cast has weighed in on that claiming that it's been blown out of proportion and that the series is only "loosely" based on the source material...

Inhumans finally reaches IMAX screens this Friday and with early word on the show extremely mixed/negative, it's no wonder that the cast of the ABC series is being asked for their thoughts on that. Fans have not responded well to the trailers, the first review was overwhelmingly negative and the TCA panel for the series was turned into a laughing stock by members of the press. So far it's not looking good for Inhumans...

"We are kind of just loosely based on the comics," says Ken Leung, who plays Karnak in the series, says below. "The source of some of the mixed reactions to the little that people have seen so far [is] that a lot of people love the comics, they have been around for decades and it remains to be seen how people will accept something that is its own iteration of something that’s already beloved."

Anson Mount, who plays Black Bolt, adds: "I think that the quote-on-quote awkwardness at the [TCAs] was blown out of proportions. There was all this news that we ended the Q&A early, which we did not. It was actually scheduled to end at that time. I think people should just see the thing." Whether or not they will remains to be seen but all is going to be revealed this coming weekend.

@Ha1frican - Exactly! I'm not too versed on the Inhumans, but the show looks bland and boring..

@Ha1frican - In that case, I'm only loosely interested

@Ha1frican - Yeah, it's the Inhumans, not the X-Men. Nobody really cares about them. This show just looks bad.

@DomoAgamotto - I'm versed in the comics and this looks like a train wreck waiting to happen. It actually looks worse than the Fox-Men films to me. I was planning on seeing it on Imax... that's not happening. I'll watch it on TV and make a decision from there, which will probably mean I won't be watching.

Marvel has its first spiralling flop and watching it unfold and seeing marvel fans (me) coming to terms with that has been amusing to me in ways that I can't convey.

@PBIRD - Technically, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was Marvel's first flop, until the end of Season 1, when Sif arrived.

@Luminus - AOS season 4 (just binged it again in the last 4 days) is one of televisions great shows! It is solid. Ghostrider, LMDs and then MADAME HYDRA Framework ending in a cliff hanging of being in space? I mean.... solid!

@DomoAgamotto - @DomoAgamotto - Yea it is. And now with the latest review, I'm really saddened. I blame Perlmutter and Scott Buck though. Perlmutter needs to be fired and Scott Buck needs to be band from directing all things comic book related. This show had the potential to be epic and now its just going to be another failed TV show. This is going to hurt the genre bad!!!

@SanFranLand - Me too I watch all CB TV SHOWS and drop it after the 1st or 2nd episode if it sucks or not interesting. I dropped all CW shows and ABC shows but Marvel netflix and Legion.

@mastakilla39 - You should really give SHIELD a second chance. Got so much better after Winter Soldier came out during the first season. Up until that point they were kind of just treading water while fleshing out the characters a bit.

More like softening the blow of bad reviews and criticism they know is about to come their way. That's purely damage control.

@L0RDbuckethead -

i feel you but, "that thing you love that we're trying to sell you IMAX tix to go see... yeah, we're not *really* doing that" is a sparkling slice of awful on what's already a sh!t sandwich of a situation.

@DAGuess - "Oh, well that will certainly make people feel better."

Well, it depends upon the persons' attitude. It will help them to feel better once they QUIT having unrealistic expectations and preferences (which usually leads to disappointment) and just enjoy what they are actually getting. But this is a difficult for people to do when they have a habit of doing otherwise.

But at least Marvel tried to warn people. Marvel has many times, warned fans that they are NOT making these films/show for the hardcore fans, but fans still, despite having no control over the films/shows, come up with expectations, preferences, hopes, and other things that ultimately lead to their disappointment.

And, naturally, instead of taking the blame themselves for their own attitude and behavior, they blame the studios. It is learned behavior.

Anyway, people usually "feel better" when they have better attitudes.

I hope that makes sense.

@L0RDbuckethead - "That's purely damage control."

No, not "purely".

Marvel has been telling fans for years that their stories and many characters are loosely based. And fans keep expecting more, so they have to keep telling them over and over again to STOP expecting the characters looks/dress/etc to be exactly like in the comics, so I doubt that they are saying this just for "damage control".

Marvel has been trying for years to get cbm fans to stop doing this shit, but its like they read these statements, and then forget about them, and get disappointed over and over again. It never ends for many fans. They just don't seem to be "getting the memo" despite how many f'ing times Kevin and many others have explained to them the same thing, over and over.

No, it's NOT "purely damage control".

@SHFL - I see what you are saying but if that was the case, why are they just now choosing to use that as an excuse? If that was the issue that should've been mentioned ONCE before this trainwreck went into production. But it wasn't mentioned about the Inhumans once. Find me an interview where someone from the cast/crew/Marvel says that before this one and I'll eat my words.

I want Inhumans to be good. I actually really like the Inhumans. But that doesn't mean I can't be upset about how Marvel TV has handled this whole situation.

LSHF - 8/31/2017, 11:52 AM
@L0RDbuckethead - Yes! I agree. They "should" make those statements.
VERY public. Before each release. More than once. It would help. It seems they only mention is when it is addressed, so it sounds defensive.

Zemo ("Civil War") is a decent example of a character not being like the comic book. They did mention they more-or-less just used his name (they weren't planning on ever using the actual character) so they thought they for the comic book fans. And they probably should have made that clear several times before the film came out.

I want to like the Inhumans, and I know that I will, because I know how to enjoy things that I want to enjoy, and avoid negative thoughts/feelings/etc. that might come to mind. I've been doing this for years, so it really gets easy. It's an attitude many people use for many different subjects; I've just adopted it for films/shows/entertainment. It's up to me.

I hope you enjoy the Inhumans. Just please accept it for what it is, and enjoy it on those terms.
L0RDbuckethead
L0RDbuckethead - 8/31/2017, 12:39 PM
@SHFL - I agree with you about all other Marvel films/tv shows, but I'm specifically talking about how they said nothing about "loose adaptations" ANYTIME before/after Inhumans went into production. Zemo is a great example, because he was almost Zemo in name only in AOU, but it still remains to be seen how truthful his MCU version will end up being from the comics. I have heard that he will be getting his mask in his next appearance. And based off unused concept art from AOU, he was supposed to have the mask in the first one. But yeah man, I totally agree and get what you're saying. Things just simply don't translate from page to screen that easily in this day and age.

However, I personally don't have any problems with them straying from the source material, as long as they throw some familiar stuff in there and stay true to the depiction and the roots of the character. Make the characters what you take from the comics and use their motivations/goals/hopes/weaknesses to create an original story. It sounds so easy in text, but we all know it is not, as evidenced by the many CBM failures, not just the MCU and DCEU.

Thank you, I've enjoyed this convo and I hope you enjoy the Inhumans as well, my friend.

@L0RDbuckethead - "Thank you, I've enjoyed this convo and I hope you enjoy the Inhumans as well, my friend."

Same here.

P.S. I did enjoy the film (saw it last night). I think it could do well if (like many TV shows) enough people "give it a fair chance" (which doesn't always happen).

At least ABC TV are trying it, as the film studios gave up on it. I think the Inhumans we are getting it better than not getting them at all.

They still have time to just cancel all showings and make a movie. Then they can at least make their money back.
