Its hard to realize that WandaVision came out almost a full three years ago on January 15th, 2021 when you consider the fact that the collector's edition only just landed in homes this weeek. In the time between the show's launch on Disney+ and it's home release this week the Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced a bevy of new projects among the likes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, I am Groot, What If...?. Werewolf by Night, Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Thor: Love and Thunder, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnes, Loki Seasons 1 and 2, Ant Man: Quantumania, Hawkeye, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and The Marvels.
With that many projects already released since the show came out it would be easy to understand confusion towards wanting to revisit this part of phase four, but with Agatha: Darkhold Diaries on the horizon and those new rumblings of a Wanda-centric movie over the last few days these branches of the sacred timeline look to be far from finished spreading their roots. When we spoke with set decorator Kathryn Orlando she shared with us her excitement of wanting to be involved in bringing Wanda's story to the big screen in a major way especially with her having begin her work on Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first film, before returning for their first streaming service. It would be interesting to see this talent return to the big screen side of Marvel's doings and to see what she may take with her creatively from the Disney+ sandbox.
The WANDAVISION Collector's Edition hit 4K Ultra HD Steelbook and Bluray Steelbook in time for the holiday on 11/28 and to celebrate and promote its release we got to pick set decorator Kathy Orlando's mind on the series and her other work within the body of the MCU.
When it came to touching on her other work within the Marvel Cinematic Universe Orlando had the following to say. "Iron Man was a movie and that was a long time ago and my title on that was The Buyer so I wasn't the department head but I was the only one and I was shopping for all of the elements. And decorator, which is my title now, is the department head. Ms. Marvel is more similar because they're both the streamers. They were totally different, the sets were so different that there could be an easter egg in there but I don't think so."
Going on, the set decorator details their research process into the sitcoms that prepared them for WandaVision. "Every show is different becasuse the material is always different but for WandaVision is was a lot of research into the sitcoms. Most of them I remembered but in my office I had a continuous loop, I was watching those sitcoms every day all day long. Just to kind of absorb the material and stasrt to understand the difference between the eras and the furnishings and the colors and my staff and my buyers were younger so it was good to have for them, there was just a lot of research to make sure that we got it right. But we didn't want to copy the sets verbatim it was more of a nod as if Wanda has made this from her memory."
Although Orlando worked on both WandaVision and Ms. Marvel, she was not involved in the set decoration for the recent The Marvels. Still, she made sure to share her excitedment at the prospect of a potential wanda film down the line. I would love to do a Marvel movie. You never know. I rewatched WandaVision yesterday and today and I'm with you, I'm ready for more. I wanna see what she does next. If I get the big Wanda movie I'll definitely bring something in and it'll be an easter egg for us."
