COWBOY BEBOP Cast Members React After Netflix Prematurely Cancels The Anime Adaptation

Last night, the news broke that Netflix had decided to cancel Cowboy Bebop after just one season, and main cast members John Cho, Mustafa Shakir and Daniella Pineda have now shared their reactions.

"Whatever happens, happens."

We found out late last night that Netflix has decided not to renew Cowboy Bebop for a second season, cancelling the anime adaptation just three weeks after its premiere on the streaming service.

The show didn't seem to be embraced by many fans of the classic anime series, and critics were decidedly mixed (we enjoyed it, for the most part). This probably didn't factor too heavily into Netflix's decision, however, as plenty of worse-reviewed shows are still on the air. No, it's all about the numbers, and even though Bebop was reportedly among the top 10 TV shows on the streamer the week after its debut, it posted a steep drop-off in viewership the following week.

This obviously won't bother anyone who wasn't invested in the show, but for fans, it's a shame we won't get to see the story continue after the finale left things wide open with the introduction of Eden Perkins' Radical Ed (the fan-favorite hacker would have had a prominent role in the second season).

Perkins has yet to comment, but fellow cast members John Cho (Spike Spiegel), Mustafa Shakir (Jet Black), Daniella Pineda (Faye Valentine), Elena Satine (Julia) and Mason Alexander Part (Gren) have shared their reactions via social media.

What did you guys make of Cowboy Bebop? Were you surprised by its cancellation? Drop us a comment down below.

A shame, actually.
The finale indeed set up a very exciting storyline for the next season.

“I read the initial concept and provided my opinions,” explained Watanabe. “But I’m not sure if they will be reflected in the final product. That’s why I have no choice but to pray and hope that it will turn out good (lol).” - Shinichirō Watanabe

It was enjoyable, but neither stylistically or narratively impressive or memorable. I won't miss this show, but I hope to see the leads in more stuff

What do you mean by "prematurely"?

@Kumkani - I think the title was trying to shorthand how quickly the cancellation happened, but yeah, it doesn't make much grammatical sense.

Netflix should stop making series that setup stuff for the next season, their catalog is getting filled with more and more unfinished stuff.

Most Netflix shows barely make it to season 3 so not suprised at all.

Good. This show deserved to be canceled for the writing... what they did to Vicious alone... this show was well made in just about every respect, but if the writing is trash... well... you get trashed.

I wish Tarantino worked on this. From what I've seen of the live-action series thus far, Cho, Shakir and Pineda seemed like really good choices for the parts the more I thought about them despite the BAD dialogue and workmanlike direction they were given. With Tarantino at the helm, I believe he would've done wonders with them in terms of writing, dialogue and direction.

Plus, he's similar to Watanabe with how both of them are in love with genre fiction and adore making obvious homages to them in their projects while still having something that make 'em more than surface level tributes.

I really wanted to see what was going to happen in season 2. I feel that they wanted to be authentic but the show felt like cosplay actors. The did have some good moments and the fight scenes were cool but it’s felt like it could have been more. The effects were good and space scenes were really good. Maybe they should have done a movie instead of a series to see how it would go.

@bobbo68 - The original show has so many cool cinematic influences. The live-action series ignored all of them and only focused on the fact that it was an anime.

If there was ever a bigger let down then the talent in show.......I mean if you get hired and you're a nobody and these actors are nobodies act your fingers bleed b/c you're not getting another shot. Like read in another post can always watch the anime. This show was dead on contact and never should have been made.

Netflix is really annoying with cancellations.. they should just stop making so many shows instead. I’m still upset with the Dark Crystal series being cancelled. I haven’t seen Cowboy Bebop yet, I was so excited for it.. I know a lot of people here hated it which made me sad but was there any space for improvement? Or is everyone glad it’s gone. I really hope this doesn’t happen to the live action Last Airbender series.

Not unexpected that the show would not be renewed, but it is odd that they announced it so soon. Gotta wonder if one Netflix exec is trying to stick it to whichever other exec greenlit this thing.

Reminds me of when Disney announced that JOHN CARTER has lost millions just a couple weeks after it opened. It was a big f-u to exec Dick Cook and everyone else who worked on it.
