STRANGER THINGS Creators Scoff At Popular Fan Theory About How The Series Will End

There are lots of theories surrounding how Stranger Things will end when it returns for its fifth and final season, but the Duffer Brothers have just laughed off when of the most popular suggestions...

Stranger Things has generated fan theories since the very start, though with season 4 split in two, fans had more time than ever before to start coming up with their own ideas. Thanks to the lengthy gap between that and the upcoming fifth and final season, there are once again plenty of crazy theories to be found online.

One of the most popular suggests we'll learn that the events of the entire series have simply been one big, long game of Dungeons and Dragons. It would be a wild note to conclude this story on, though it makes at least some sense given the parallels between the game and Stranger Things' story.

Talking to Metro (via SFFGazette.com), creators Matt and Ross Duffer were more than happy to shoot down the idea.

"That is correct," Matt joked. "That is the ending...No." Ross added, "That would be the equivalent of, “That’s all a dream”. No, I assure you that is not how we’re going to end the show. We’ve known where we’ve been going for a while. And we feel comfortable with it; hopefully, it satisfies everyone. We’ll see."

This was to be expected, but it's also something of a relief. While a memorable note to end things on, it would also be an underwhelming way to wrap up this story, though we're sure Dungeons and Dragons' influence will continue to be felt during the final stand against Vecna.

Stranger Things premiered on Netflix in 2016 and is set during the 1980s in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. It follows a group of kids who encounter supernatural occurrences, including the disappearance of their friend Will Byers. The series blends elements of supernatural horror, government conspiracy, and 1980s pop culture references, paying homage to the works of Stephen King and Steven Spielberg.

The show has gained widespread acclaim for its nostalgic atmosphere, compelling characters, and suspenseful storytelling, becoming a cultural phenomenon with a dedicated fan base and one of Netflix's biggest draws.

It's previously been revealed that the first season 5 episode will be titled "The Crawl," with Prey director Dan Trachtenberg at the helm. Shawn Levy will also step back behind the camera, but production was forced to come to a halt back in May due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike.

Both of those have since ended, though we still don't know when Stranger Things will return for its fifth and final season (2024, however, is looking increasingly unlikely). What we do know is that Linda Hamilton has been added to the cast, so there's plenty to be excited about when the show does eventually return.

@Batmangina - Eddie Munson, best new character, they are so stupid for killing him

@Batmangina - I love that the nerdy guy, who was unpopular and many people assumed was a killer, ended up being the hero and sacrificing himself for others. Would I like more Eddie? Sure. But his arc was amazing. Sometimes a short lived character can make a bigger impact than one who stays for a long time.

@mountainman - His arc was fantastic and I completely get where you're coming from. Ironically, the Brit playing Eddie was the most authentically 80s thing in that show - I know because that was me - minus the D&D plus a ton of weed. 🤣

@Batmangina - Yeah dude did a great job. I was really young during the era presented on the show, but I did know older kids (including cousins) that were similar to Eddie.

I trust the Duffer’s. This show has been an exercise in excellence, and I”m looking forward to the final season.

That said, I wish we could have gotten more time with Eddie (though he had a satisfying character arc).

The end is just Dustin playing Dungeons and Dragons by himself and talking to his imaginary friends. 11 is really his pet poodle. Fade to black.

Why do we keep getting these theories where it turns out the amazing story we've been seeing was just imaginary? Do we not like having fun?
JustAWaffle
JustAWaffle - 12/20/2023, 9:41 AM
@Origame - it’s the same effect as the multiverse on story telling. When you spread out the creative world in fiction to either non existence or a lack of significance, you empty it of meaning. There can be some fun stories within, but dropping “it was all a dream” on it, or “this is just one of infinite realities,” you cut the legs off its purpose.

Like what was the point of it all? Why rewatch it if it doesn’t satisfy with a conclusion?

This show should've never went past season 1. Season 1 was lightning in a bottle.

@GhostDog - Indeed.

@GhostDog - yet its still successful and wildly popular spawning 5 seasons on netflix of all platforms who cancel shows in a heartbeat. too bad YOU dont like the ride it provides.

@supermanrex - I wouldn't have necessarily ended. I thought the anthology route would've been interesting.

@GhostDog - An anthology series could’ve been interesting too. But I don’t think that would have had the popularity it has.

This show has been excellent. It's had its ups & downs like any show, but SCREW the nitpickers. It's a cool teen coming of age horror show you can watch with your kids & Grandkids.

I trust these guys and look forward to an epic conclusion.

Loved seasons 1, 3, and 4. 2 is the only one that meandered around and couldn’t find what it was about.
I was fine with season 4 being the end but I’m okay with one last season.
