STAR WARS: UNDERWORLD Test Footage Leaks Online, Finally Revealing George Lucas' Scrapped TV Series

Remember when Star Wars creator George Lucas was developing a TV series called Underworld? Well, some test footage from that has been leaked online, and you definitely need to take a look at this...

The first live-action Star Wars TV series came our way last year in the form of The Manalorian, but that's not the first time Lucasfilm has considered a small screen take on this Galaxy Far, Far Away.

Before Disney purchased the studio for $4 billion, George Lucas was working on Star Wars: Underworld, a show that was going to be set between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope which chronicled the rise of the Empire. Fifty scripts were written and the initial plan was for there to be 100 42-minute instalments. Thanks to budgetary concerns, it never ended up happening.

It's clear now that there are no plans for Star Wars: Underworld to see the light of day, but some test footage has now leaked online giving us an idea of what the show would have looked like.

There's also a behind-the-scenes look at how all this was put together, and it seems fitting that it's leaked now, especially after we recently got to see Colin Trevorrow's original plans for Episode IX

Check out the footage below:

concept art from Colin Trevorrow's Star Wars: Episode IX!

Kylo Ren was going to seek out an ancient Sith master who taught Emperor Palpatine much of what he knew, and his name was Tor Valum. Well, here he is, and it's fair to say that he would have been a terrifying sight to behold.

Luke's Force Ghost would have continued to train Rey in this version of the movie, and they can be seen here on a planet called Koralev. This arguably makes much more sense than him leaving Leia to pick up the slack in his absence.

It appears as if Captain Phasma was going to be included in Colin Trevorrow's Episode IX before Rian Johnson killed her off in The Last Jedi, and she's shown here executing Resistance traitor Bisc Kova  on Coruscant as the masses look on.

The Millennium Falcon flies to a planet called Bonadan where Poe Dameron would have reportedly led the crew to his grandfather (what role he would have played isn't made clear).

We've been hearing a lot about the Knife-9, a ship which would have been piloted by the Knights of Ren. Well, here it is in all its glory as it chases down Poe and Rey as they pilot a Razer Sail through Bonadan waters.

Using her newfound double-bladed lightsaber, Rey has taken the fight to the First Order's Stormtroopers aboard a Star Destroyer, but it definitely looks like she might be giving into some of her darker impulses based on how she's dressed!

Kylo Ren battles Darth Vader in this scene which was meant to be similar to the cave sequence in The Empire Stikes Back. After being scarred earlier in the movie, Ren was going to create a new mask using Mandalorian armour which we catch a glimpse of here.

The once proud city of Coruscant is now the stronghold for The First Order, and it makes perfect sense that they would set up shop there based on how Emperor Palpatine once used the capital as his home.

The driving force of Trevorrow's movie would have been the Resistance attempting to send out a beacon to the rest of the Galaxy, with a message from Leia rallying them to their cause to help them stop the First Order. Here, we see them trying to send it.

R2-D2 and C-3PO roam the streets of Coruscant and it's clear that the city has fallen into ruin thanks to the First Order. In fact, it's pretty much unrecognisable compared to the version we saw in George Lucas' prequels.

Finn was once going to lead a rebellion on Coruscant, giving him a vastly more satisfying story arc as a result. Here, we get to see him take the fight to the First Order, ending them once and for all with the help of those living in the city.

After Rey tracks Kylo Ren to Mortis, she comes face to face with a massive creature and no doubt makes good use of her new double bladed lightsaber (her original staff has been combined with the remains of Luke Skywalker's original blade).

Those living on Coruscant have taken refuge beneath the old Jedi Temple and the city's streets. Using old Empire weapons, they've created an army of old AT-STs in order to try and take their home back from the First Order.

Vukg8gzs o

And here they are in action! It looks like the citizens of Coruscant have actually donned old Imperial Stormtrooper armour, which does make sense as it offers them some protection against the onslaught to come from the First Order.

A battle like this would have been amazing to behold, and it's been said that Finn waving that flag would have been a huge character moment for him and likely quite a bit more exciting than him wanting to tell Rey something but never doing so.

R2-D2 was going to be destroyed during the final battle, and here we see an emotional Threepio bidding farewell to his oldest friend (don't worry, though, he would have been restored and brought back to life right at the end of the movie).

M3adjbmj o

Look closely at Kylo Ren here and we get our best look yet at the new mask he would have worn to cover his face after it was left horribly scarred by an ancient Sith weapon, which wouldn't have granted him access to its secrets due to him being so conflicted.

W4woblkv o

This is downright epic! As Luke appeared in front of his nephew, he would have used the Force to grab Kylo Ren's lightsaber blade in what would have no doubt been a powerful moment on screen.

Wfl4jyqa o

Upon realising that the First Order were fighting a losing battle, General Hux took the coward's way out and used one of the lightsabers in his collection (it would have been purple in the movie) to commit seppuku.

This was clearly meant to pay homage to A New Hope, as Leia would have recorded a message to send out to the wider Galaxy in order to let them know that they could rise up and help the Resistance end the First Order once and for all.

Disney and J.J. suck at Star Wars.

@Franshu - opinions and all... but he didn’t write anything good regarding Star Wars... I guess the overall idea is ok... but that’s about it. I think he had more interesting/fresh/creative ideas with the Indiana Jones character than he did with the pretty much (if we are being honest in any capacity) mediocre Star Wars stories.
But to each their own. 👌🏻🤸‍♂️

@CapnMurphy2021 - Lucas, the man who INVENTED Star Wars, is "bad at Star Wars"? Seriously? Lucas is a weak writer. He's a brilliant creative and LITERALLY NO ONE has a better understanding of the world than the man who created it. He needs people to craft his vision into good movies, but even his worse stories are better than Abrams' mess.

@SerKurtWagner - like I said... think what you want... it’s your right! I disagree with your logic tho... as I don’t believe that creator is always the best at telling the story. Look at most comic book characters,., a ton of writers tell stories of the character far better than the creators.

I also acknowledged that the man was talented... even though I don’t think Star Wars is all that impressive...
I also think the all caps stuff is pretty funny 🤸‍♂️🤸‍♂️🤸‍♂️

I remember Lucas talking about this back in the day. Lucas and Ron Moore, of Battlestar Galactica fame, were working on this together and completed some 50 scripts that are now just sitting on a shelf somewhere. The problem they grappled with was they didn’t want to sacrifice the special effects the scripts required but couldn’t justify the necessary price per episode for a tv show.

This wasn’t a Disney [frick] up it’s just that straight to streaming hadn’t happened yet and the price couldn’t work with the economic realities of television at the time.

Damn shame though...

I imagine this could work now with budget concerns. It's a lot less expensive now a days. I'd love to see more. Has anyone seen the anime Tie Fighter? so good

Man, that is a hard thing to judge. The look of it was decent and FX heavy, yet pretty different from what we’ve usually seen in Star Wars. The scene itself was pretty bad, with horrible acting, but it was presumably filmed only as test footage, so the repetitive, dragged-out nature of it all that killed any tension wasn’t indicative of actual quality.

Even with everything that they packed into that scene, it became very clear they had one tiny bit of city dressed out for filming, which cut down on the expansive feel I think they were going for. In a shorter sequence, it would have been less noticeable, but you quickly see how expensive this would have been to do.
