The 3rd episode of Bates Motel deals with multiple plot points, all important to the overall story. Norman passes out in class for no apparent reason, and even though the doctor wants him to stay over night, Norma checks him out. It is revealed that Norman's older brother is working with the drug dealers shown in the last episode. The cop that Norma is dating knows about the man they killed, and even has evidence, which he uses for blackmail. In the end, Norman goes into his house to steal back the evidence and finds a kidnapped girl being kept in the basement of the cop's house.
Now, when Norman passes out, he has very disturbing, erotic image of his teacher in his head. Now, in the movies, it is implied that Norman is into some pretty freaky stuff. I think that this is showing that he is getting closer and closer to becoming what we see in Psycho. It was some pretty creepy character development.
In the scene where Norma takes him out of the hospital, it shows just how attached she is to him. Even Norman's brother tells him that his mother is too attached. But Norman does not seem to care. Even though it is only 3 episodes in, Norman has been getting more and more attached to his mother. Now it is at the point where it is creepy and unhealthy. I can tell that we will see him murder somebody by the end of the season. Norman is descending more and more into madness, and Highmore is playing it perfectly.
Now, in the last episode, there were hints of a killer lurking in the town. Now that I know that the cop that Norma is dating is not a nice guy, I have a feeling that he could turn out to be the killer. Also, when Norman sees the woman chained in his basement, it is exactly like the drawings in the notebook Norman found. I think it was just a hallucination, and it is, again, showing Norman's underlying craziness. I think that between the disturbing notebook, the killer in the town, and everything going on with Norma, it looks like we could see Norman become the psycho we all know by the end of the season.
So all in all, a good episode with some very good and creepy character development, and some great set up for future episodes. I can't wait for episode 4.
