Sony Bosses Believe VENOM 2 Deserves Credit For TOP GUN: MAVERICK's Box Office Success

Yeah, this might be a stretch. In a new interview, Sony co-presidents Sanford Panitch and Josh Greenstein suggested that their studio deserves some credit for Top Gun: Maverick's box office success.

Top Gun: Maverick was one of the undisputed kings of the box office this year (Spider-Man: No Way Home might have something to say), earning $1.2 billion worldwide and counting. A number of factors contributed to the action sequel's success, but credit where it's due, Venom: Let There Be Carnage deserves recognition for paving the way for Maverick's box office dominance... apparently.

During an interview with Vulture, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group co-presidents Sanford Panitch and Josh Greenstein suggested that their studio deserves at least some credit for getting audiences back into theaters in bulk during the pandemic, thus setting the stage for Maverick to swoop in and clean up.

Greenstein cites the Venom sequel, which released in theaters last October to a $90 million debut, as a "gamble" which paid off and encouraged other studios to follow suit.

“When we first started releasing movies last October, there were really no other big movies,” he said. “Everyone had pushed their big movies to this year, to this summer. We took a big gamble putting ‘Venom’ in theaters. Then we doubled down with ‘Ghostbusters.’ Then our biggest bet was when every other tentpole had fled, we tripled down with ‘Spider-Man’ — our biggest, most important piece of IP.”

“There’s so much press about Top Gun right now. It’s like, ‘The movie business is back!'” Panitch added. “In a weird way, I would say ‘Top Gun’ is benefitting from us taking our shot. Venom is the start of that story that allows Top Gun to do the kind of business it did. These things don’t happen overnight. It’s a seeding.”

While there is some truth to this, the Sony bosses seem to be forgetting that other major studios beat them to the punch. Warner Bros.' Godzilla Vs. Kong made a big impact at the box office despite a simultaneous streaming debut, and Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was released a month before Let There Be Carnage.

So, we guess they deserve a bit of credit for Venom's success!

I agree. People decided to save up money by not going to Venom (and Ghostbusters) and spent it on Top Gun twice.

Otherwise I can't think of a reason that remotely makes sense.

@bkmeijer1 - not to mention that I think Shang-Chi came out before Venom 2 did.

@bkmeijer1 - Few people I know watched Top Gun Maverick a good number of times, they love it, and also bought a ticket for Maverick once more just to sneak into a Thor: Love and Thunder screening to see how terrible the film people thought it was. They thought it was terrible movie too and did not deserve their money. I think that is a great a idea, wish I done that IMO. Top Gun Maverick is a movie that deserves people's hard earned money for sure, a fantastic film. Will be watching Maverick again. 🍻👍

they deserve credit for showing people what a bad movie looks like so that they'd know what a good movie looks like when one came out.

TBH it was Kong Vs Godzilla..but okay. But like Chris Nolan said all movie studios have to work together to consistently release the big movies so they can get into a habit of leaving their house again. All films from all studios who got the box office up again helped.

But IMO it was thanks to WB for releasing KvG and Mortal Kombat because their opening weekends proved that ppl were still willing to go back despite a day and date release and then Demon Slayer Mugen Train (Funimation/Sony) came out as an exclusive and grossed 20 mil too.

I knew there would be a psychological toll to releasing shows like Ms Marvel and The Boys so close together.

The only thing I give Venom 2 credit for is ruining a sure thing with a horrible plot.

I was at a nightclub one night with my buddy and we got separated, and I had quite a bit to drink, so I was feeling brave. There was this smoking hot girl at the bar, so I figured I'd give it a shot and ask her to dance. I mean, what's the worst that could happen? She could say "no", right? Big deal.

So, I ask her to dance and she immediately tells me to "[frick] off" and throws her drink in my face. Her gf and many people surrounding her at the bar broke out into laughter. Dejected and stunned, I walked away to the bathroom, where I splashed cold water on my face and gathered my wits back together.

I cleaned up and wandered around the club for maybe another 20 minutes, looking for my buddy because at this point, I was ready to call it a night and head home. I couldn't find him anywhere and called his phone. There was no answer which I assumed was because he couldn't here it over the loud music. Minutes later, I spotted him in a large crowd on the dance floor.

He was dancing with the same hot chick who threw the drink in my face.

In a weird way, I would say my buddy benefitted from me getting that drink thrown in my face. Me getting a drink thrown in my face is the start of that story that allows my buddy to do the kind of business he did. These things don’t happen overnight. It’s a seeding.
