VENOM Secures China Release Date; Set To Open In Early November
As it continues its box office dominance, Ruben Fleischer's Venom has finally locked down a release date in China. The Tom Hardy-starrer should top $400 million worldwide before the end of this week.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Sony Pictures' Venom has officially secured a China release date, which could prove to be extremely fruitful for the Ruben Fleischer-directed superhero feature that at the time of this posting, has already earned over $378.1 million worldwide ($142.8M domestic; $235.3M foreign) on an estimated $100 million production budget.
The Chinese-based internet firm Tencent, which holds a 25% stake in the film, has confirmed to THR that the Tom Hardy-starrer will open in the Middle Kingdom on November 9th.
To prepare for the release, Tencent is expected to begin heavy promotions for the film sometime this week, which will be led by an aggressive digital marketing campaign that will utilize China's most popular messaging and social media service WeChat, their Tencent Video platform, the movie ticketing app Maoyan, and a lot more.
Venom is just the second Hollywood film to lock down a China release date this fall, joining Shane Black's The Predator (Oct. 26). The last American film to open there was Tom Cruise's critically acclaimed Mission: Impossible - Fallout in late August, which ultimately grossed a monumental $181.1 million (approximately 23% of its final $790M global tally).
One of Marvel's most enigmatic, complex and badass characters comes to the big screen, starring Academy Award® nominated actor Tom Hardy as the lethal protector Venom.
