It's been 25 years since Mario last appeared on the big screen, but the legendary character is ready for his second shot. Nintendo announced today that they have partnered with Illumination Entertainment on a brand new animated movie starring the iconic Italian plumber.

There had been reports back in November that Nintendo was close to signing a movie deal with the studio behind Despicable MeMinions, and Sing to create an animated Super Mario Bros. movie, and now it's official.

"Nintendo and Illumination are partnering on a movie starring Mario, co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri!" Nintendo of America announced on Twitter.

Shigeru Miyamoto, of course, is the creator of Mario and many other iconic Nintendo characters, while Chris Meledandri is best known for his work on the Despicable Me franchise.

The last major film starring the iconic Nintendo character was the 1993 live-action adaptation Super Mario Bros., which starred Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi, respectively. The film was a bomb both critically and commercially, but has since garnered a cult following. There's no word on when the Super Mario animated movie will hit theaters, but with the character riding high following the successful launch of Super Mario Odyssey on the Nintendo Switch, now might be the perfect time for him to return to the big screen.

@Leomessi10 - Same, the movie is a terrible adaptation but in its own vein I quite like the live action movie.

@azimiq - nah, Mario is a Nintendo property, which means Disney pays THEM if they wanna use him, Nintendo can do whatever they want with him. they even lend him to Ubisoft recently for that Mario/Rabbids game (that apparently is good).

This could be amazing, or an absolute catastrophe

Whatever they do, it will be better than the live action version.

Could be good. I may have to buy the soundtrack at least if they incorporate all of the classic game themes.

Did Nintendo just finally officially announce this, because it seems like I’ve known this for a while?

@TheUnworthyThor - Yes Nintendo made it official, we've heard of it, but neither Nintendo or Illumination confirmed it

This is a dream come true. I know it can be done right. Bring on the rest of the Nintendo universe!

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - I want a Legend Of Zelda film, but Illumination wouldn’t be my first choice for that.

@Chewtoy - I would still love to see Zelda and Metroid as live action movies, but animated would be the way to go if there was a plan to create a connected universe on the big screen.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - I’d rather see Zelda animated, at least, but Illumination hasn’t done anything more serious or visually stunning... at least to my knowledge.
