"I'm sorry."

As promised, HBO Max debuted this week's episode of The Last of Us two days early to avoid clashing with the Super Bowl on Sunday and it was arguably the show's most impactful hour yet as Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) met Henry (Lamar Johnson) and Sam (Keivonn Woodard), who played a critical part in their escape from Kansas City... until tragedy struck.

Spoilers to follow, but the episode picked up with a quick flashback as we met Henry and Sam as they started to run from Kathleen (Melanie Lynskey) before ultimately running out of food and being forced to go back on the streets, where, as fate would have it, they witnessed Joel and Ellie crashing into Kansas City. We then move back to the moment from the end of last week's episode where they confront the pair and the four decide to form an alliance to get out of this city alive.

They bond throughout the episode and plot their uncertain futures together as everything seems to be going according to plan too, until they run into a sniper, who Joel manages to take out, but not before he was able to alert Kathleen and Perry (Jeffrey Pierce) of their presence. All hell breaks loose shortly thereafter as all of Kathleen's forces come gunning for Henry's head and things really take a turn for the worst when a downed truck falls into the ground and unleashes a horde of infected - including one nasty bloater - who promptly decimate the population in horrific fashion.

While Kathleen and Perry get killed pretty brutally, all four of our heroes manage to escape, but not unscathed. In a touching scene between Ellie and Sam, we learn that the youngest member of their new group has been bitten and in a last-ditch effort, Ellie attempts to save him by using her own immune blood, believing she is the cure. However, fate is a fickle mistress, and Sam still turned, forcing Henry to make the heartbreaking decision to take his brother's life... before tragically taking his own.

Joel and Ellie bury their friends and leave a simple note, "I'm sorry," before moving on to the next leg of their journey: Wyoming.

Check out the new preview for season one, episode six, titled "Kin," below:

Plus, check out the featurette for episode five:

The Last of Us features Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Anna Torv as Tess, Nico Parker as Sarah, Murray Bartlett as Frank, Nick Offerman as Bill, Storm Reid as Riley, Merle Dandridge as Marlene, Jeffrey Pierce as Perry, Lamar Johnson as Henry, Keivonn Woodard as Sam, Graham Greene as Marlon, Elaine Miles as Florence, and Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker.

THE LAST OF US story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

What was even the point of the Karen, all she did was talk, steal screentime from Henry/Sam and then die.

Episode 5 is one of the best episodes of TV I've seen in some time. It makes ep 3 feel like a blimp on the radar honestly. But then again I thought ep 4 was also better than 3.

@McMurdo - Agreed. Three wasn't bad because it featured a gay love story. It was bad because you do a completely unrelated side episode on the 3rd episode of a season. Other shows that have done this well have done it much farther into the show's run. And typically those unrelated episodes still relate to some character that we have known for the show. Bill and Frank may be mentioned here and there, but that side story had no relation to the overall plot.

The "Backstory!" episode of Mythic Quest was amazing because it provided some needed depth to a reoccurring character that you had previously only seen as a doting old fool.

"The Constant" is consistently seen as one of the best episodes of Lost but features a main character and lore that is important to the overall plot.

For a show that looks to only feature 20 total episodes, spending 5% of it on a side story seems pointless. Had they condensed the Bill/Frank story to 15-20 minutes of the episode, I doubt so many people would have taken issue with it.

@mountainman - I liked ep 3 it was compelling. But it was also quite obvious. And mostly pointless to the story at hand. But I think ep 5 makes me appreciate it more now as with Henry and Sam we now realize we are seeing what a modern apocalypse really looks like. But it doesn't come close to ep 5. Ep 5 is a straight up thriller tragedy.

@mountainman - it's 10 episodes btw not 20.

@McMurdo - There are supposed to be 2 10-episode seasons total. So 20 is the total show run.

And overall I liked some aspects of episode 3. Seeing the wary lonely prepper trust and then live life with someone is an interesting and unique angle. I just feel like the same point could have been made had that montage been shorter.

@mountainman - I see I see okay. Makes sense.

There really was no reason at all for the Kathleen character. At the least, more or less, they managed to get Henry and Sam right.

Episode 6 will be the one that truly makes it or breaks it.

@TheLight - I liked Kathleen she felt like a sociopath narcissist who had little remorse for anyone but herself. She has given up on caring about morality or anything with real meaning. She just wants the kid who turned in her brother dead. Her brother is probably the only person in her life patient enough to hold a conversation with her.

I am digging this show.

Too bad if it's not exactly like the video game which I have not played but soon will. I heard it's great.

The third episode just told us how woke this show was going to get.

That lost me.

I already wasn't jazzed about yet ANOTHER zombie show. They are becoming white noise at this point.
But add to it a pointless subplot and I can only imagine what else is coming after that.

@TyrantBossMedia - check out ep 5. It's peak TV. Worth it imo just to get to this. Ep 4 was better than ep 3 too. So it actually only gets better from there.

@McMurdo - I trust your opinion. Maybe I'll give it a look.
