After multiple delays, we finally have a release date for Marvel's Midnight Suns, and this time it could be set in stone. The upcoming tactical role-playing game from 2K and developer Firaxis Games (Civilization, XCOM) is set to launch on December 2, 2022 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Windows PC.

For those still playing on a last-gen console like the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or even the Nintendo Switch, you'll have to wait a bit longer. We still don't have a release date for these older consoles, but 2K did reiterate that the launch is coming "at a later date."

Accompanying the release date announcement was a brand new trailer showing off the card-based tactics gameplay. We also get to see some of the non-combat oriented gameplay, such as the role-playing elements in which you interact with other characters and influence the gameplay and those heroes' abilities. In between combat missions, you'll also be managing an upgradeable base of operations called "The Abbey."

Set in the darker, supernatural side of the Marvel Universe, Marvel's Midnight Suns is a tactical RPG from the creators of XCOM. As the Hunter, a legendary demon slayer with a mysterious past, you'll lead a team of legendary Marvel heroes as they attempt to stop the Mother of Demons from completing an ancient prophecy and summoning her evil master, Chthon.

Inspired by the classic Marvel Comics storyline, "Rise of the Midnight Sons," Marvel's Midnight Suns explores the darker side of the Marvel Universe. You play as the Hunter, an ancient warrior (and fully customizable protagonist) who has been resurrected by the Midnight Suns to help defeat Lilith, Mother of Demons. You'll fight alongside an unlikely team of Super Heroes and supernatural warriors including Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, Captain America, Iron Man, Blade, and more.

It was also announced that Marvel Entertainment will be released a series animated prequel shorts for the game. A set of five short videos will "provide backstory on how Lilith became the Mother of Demons, and how Super Heroes like Blade, Magik, Ghost Rider and Nico Minoru came together to form the young core of the Midnight Suns."

The first video will premiere on October 31, 2022 with subsequent videos releasing weekly. You'l be able to watch them via the Marvel Entertainment YouTube Channel. The intro teaser for the series was shared as well.

Marvel's Midnight Suns has been met with intrigue along with some hesitation given the game's development woes. Admittedly, the tactics strategy gameplay is not for everyone, although Firaxis is about as good as it gets when it comes to developing for this sort of gameplay genre. So there are some high hopes for this game. Are you excited for Marvel's Midnight Suns?

Ah yes. That game I keep getting excited for until I realize it's a card game.

Would've been awesome if it's like the successor to ultimate alliance.

@Origame - it's 2022, who with a ps5 wants to play a turn based card game. Strange decision this game.

"or even the Nintendo Switch"

Why does this sound kinda condescending though? Switch is bigger than ever.

Anyway, that releasedate is sooner than expected. Really thought we had another 2023 release on our hands, with all the delays as of late

@bkmeijer1 - Yea, don't mean for it to sound condescending. The Switch is a fantastic system, but that's mostly due to Nintendo's rich catalog of games. As a console, it's certainly innovative but pales in comparison to the tech of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Thats why many consider it a "last-gen" system.

@MattIsForReal - okay, gotcha. It's hardware is definitely not as good as the current gen, but the full sentence (also the part I didn't quote) made it sound the Switch wasn't as popular to me.

Maybe calling it condescending is a big word on my part, but thanks for explaining it anyway.

@bkmeijer1 - considering it's a third party title optimized for current hardware, it makes sense. Ever play mortal kombat 11 on the switch?

@Origame - can't say I have. Can imagine Switch might be the hardest console to port too though

@bkmeijer1 - it's actually fairly easy, but compromises are needed to be made when compared to current console games. It's basically just functional.

@Origame - making compromises sometimes isn't easy too. Alrhough it's mostly hardware compromises then I guess, so maybe that is indeed fairly easy

@bkmeijer1 - we all love Nintendo. But since Gamecube they're behind generations.

@Fogs - true. I feel the quote was more aimed on the popularity of the console rather than it's hardware though

Was hoping this would play more like traditional Xcom, but I do like the roster.

The last five Avengers are out of place in the roster, they shouldve included helstrom, satana or someone with supernatural powers

If this was a third-person or Diablo-style top-down-view game, I’d be incredibly excited. Since it’s a turn-based card battling game, there is absolutely zero appeal to this.

Ffs, I wish they’d just through that $$ at make a feature-length CG film. I couldn’t care less about playing a glorified card game.

they misspelled "sons"
Origame

@IvanBadski - I think that was on purpose since there are female members so sons doesn't make much sense.

Sun's is probably being used metaphorically to emphasize their shining light in the dark.

I'm not into card-based games really, but SOMETHING about this game when I saw the gameplay just drew my attention instantly. Maybe it's the story, the graphics, but really, the gameplay did it. If it sucks, it sucks, on the developers themselves. I do want to give it a chance though, and why not give card-based gameplay a shot with a property I love?

So I am excited for it. I'm willing to give it a good chance, plus I need some PS5 games...the library is pretty dead right now.
