Producer Offers Update On Tomb Raider Reboot; Movie To Take Lara Croft "Back To Her Roots"!

The upcoming reboot of the video game turned movie looks set to take Lara Croft back to her roots, and you can find out exactly what that means in this revealing interview with producer Graham King...

Thanks to Collider, we have some new details on the status of the planned Tomb Raider reboot. After two fairly successful movies starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, the studio are now planning on exploring the early years of the iconic video game character...exactly what an upcoming video game from Square Enix will do. Here's what producer Graham King told the site. You can find more by clicking on the link below.

On When Production May Start And The New Direction Of The Franchise:

I think hopefully next year. We just got the script in on Tomb Raider and it’s really good. It’s something that, for me anyway, is different, you know rebooting a franchise that I didn’t produce to begin with. But there’s something about her character and going back to her roots, and that’s what we’re doing with this. You’re actually gonna meet her before she has all her powers as Lara Croft. It’s more of a character study, but it’s a really fun, fun adventure story.

On The Chances Of Seeing Angelina Jolie Cameo In Some Way:

I don’t know, you know we’ve spoken about Tomb Raider and we’ll have to see. I mean she’s so wonderful, she just directed this movie for me, In the Land of Blood and Honey, which I think we’re about five weeks from releasing and I can’t wait for people to see that movie. She did an amazing job as a director, absolutely amazing. Maybe I’ll ask her to direct it (laughs). We did a screening of the movie in L.A., like a preview, and I didn’t tell anyone who directed it, then afterwards I asked the focus group who they think directed it, and they said Roman Polanski or Clint Eastwood, which is “wow.” But she’s that good, and the film is that good.

What do you guys make of these plans for the franchise? When even the makers of the video game are taking the character "back to her roots" it seems like a change of direction for Lara Croft is wanted by all parties, and we could be in for a treat if the movie takes its inspiration from what we've so far seen of that particular reboot.

Guys didn't you know? Lara Croft can fly, is super strong, is immortal, and can time travel. That's how the whole reboot thing happens, she travels back to when she was a baby, kidnaps her infant self, and raises her differently. Hence, new status quo.

He did not mean she had actual powers guys! haha! He meant her strength as a woman, and as the tomb raider! At least, thats what I got out of it...

Gemma Arterton...The perfect woman for the job:

According to the Top Cow comics run on her(got em' all)
history as a heroine, it all starts when she, her fiance, mom and dad plane crash in the Himalayas where she's the only survivor. Having nothing, she uses what skills she's leaned from her dad to survive the elements. During this time she has an epiphany after discovering artifacts in a cave. Don't remember anything else.

Her skills are limited to gymnastics, martial arts and an expert in firearms having a dead-shot aim.

I sincerely hope this guy takes the character very seriously, and respects the source material.

Neill Blomcamp( District 9) to direct.

I like the way they're going about this. This has a lot of potential. I just hope they don't use the story for the rebooted video game because I don't think that would translate as well on the big screen.

It sucks that the Olivia Wilde casting was debunked. I think she would have kicked ass as Lara Croft. My top choices for the role are Hayley Atwell, Emily Blunt or Gemma Aterton.

@tweeeeenkies Good choice! She has the right look and attitude to pull it off.

@headlopper That's interesting stuff. Yah, I grow up playing the Tomb Raider games(Didn't read the comics) and I hope they do the character justice.

Emily Blunt or Olivia Wilde would be my two top picks. I really don't like Gemma Arterton, she's not that good looking and she annoyed the hell out of me in Clash and in Persia.

@mgeoff88...Thanks...I love her. She is a great actress, and down right sexy. She is perfect forthe new Lara Croft!
I know some people think she is plain when she acts, but she is perfect! Great at action, and very beautiful...So talented

Oh yes, the trailer for the new game looks very good!

I usually hate video games, with the exception of Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat, but this looks AMAZING!

I love the Tomb Raider comic books, and online game (the newest online game was great)

I would say either use Gemma Arterton or Jennifer Lawrence. I would have Angelina either direct or cameo as her mom.

@AlexDeLarge...Allison would be great! She is already in shape, the model for her, and ready to get dirty!

The director would be an idiot not to pick her or Gemma Arterton!!!
Wonder if she can act?

Seriously Hayley Atwell has the boobs, the acting ability, and her Peggy Carter in the Captain America movie is exactly what Lara Croft should be. A no nonsense driven character who understands that she's hot and everyone depends on her, but knows that it's all about the mission, and is still very much in the end a woman to her men.

Headlopper: you said it all, the TOP COW comic book series was well developed.

She hunts and hoards treasures to find the peace of mind she had with her parents, and that´s it.

tweeeeeenkies3@ That i dont know. But she could perhaps pull it off under the guidance of good director and script.
There is many young unexperinced actors/models who have proofed to be great in acting and now are famous. So who knows?...
She definitely deserves a chance thou.

@AlexDeLarge...I completely agree...Like, Julia Voth, the model for Jill Valentine in the newer Resident evil games...Se is 26, and starred in the action movie Bitch Slap, and a lot of directors seem to like her now.

I think Allison is perfect...She has the look, the voice, is experienced in different figting styles, she is perfect.

Gemma is my #1 choice, but Allison is 2nd.

I think Christina Cox would be the perfect Lara Croft.

Of all those mentioned, only Hayley Atwell:
(a) Has the looks
(b) Can do the stunts
AND....(most importantly)
(c) Can act.

The rest are nothing more than eye candy, and not especially appealing eye candy, either.
