Last week, X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn left production on the film's highly anticipated sequel, Days Of Future Past. We also heard that Bryan Singer - who launched the X-Men film franchise with 2000's X-Men and 2003's X2: X-Men United - was the studio's top choice to take over directing duties for the film. Now, Deadline confirms that Singer will helm X-Men: Days Of Future Past, which is described as "apocalyptic" by creative consultant Mark Millar. Additionally, Vaughn is near a deal to produce, alongside writer Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner. Singer's next film, Warner Bros.' Jack The Giant Slayer, has been slated for a March 1st, 2013 release.

Most of the cast members from First Class - which includes James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence - is set to return for the sequel. 20th Century Fox hope that they can make the film's July 18th, 2014 release date. Filming is said to be commencing in early 2013, after Lawrence wraps up Lionsgate's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

UPDATE: In their article reporting the news, Bleeding Cool say that they've heard that there is a "meaningful number" of cast members from the original X-Men film who will be present in Days Of Future Past. Patrick Stewart (Professor X) and Famke Janssen (Jean Grey) previously teased their possible involvement with a future X-Men movie, while Shawn Ashmore (Iceman) and Daniel Cudmore (Colossus) recently expressed interest in reprising their roles in Days Of Future Past.

Yeah, Superman Returns was rubbish. But X-Men and X-2 were great, so I'm optimistic!

Singer is a horrible director, the X-Men franchised is ruined, Marvel needs to buy the rights back, and blah blah blah blah.

There. I just saved you 4 comment pages .

I'm glad Fox hired Bryan Singer to direct X-Men:Days of Future Past. I thought he did a great job with the first two X-Men films & I enjoyed Superman Returns (Regardless what people say)

Oh, so this is the bad news of the day, huh? :P

Mark Millar better keep Bryan Singer in check. He's a good director, but the aesthetics of this colorful team were really dull in the films he directed. Days Of Future Past may be a our first real X-Men film. The previous have only breezed the surface of the mythos, and if you know the comics, X-Men is heavy stuff and deserve an epic portrayal.

Well, I certainly hope he has progressed past those stupid leather costumes. I want to see the real X-Men this time around. And Fix the continuity, this is the perfect time an excuse with "Days of Future Past" so don't blow it.

@UltimaRex- You'd be surprised.

@YoungThanos- Wow. You just assumed I don't like the Marvel "Revolution." I like what Marvel is doing and I like there movies. But I'm not some ass-kisser who blindly accepts whatever is thrown at them and is unable to allow any legitimate criticisms.

Not sure how I feel about this but singer just does not do it for me.X-men for me was A bit OVER RATED and i dont think he handles action to well.WHY HIM? X2 was great but I just dont understand for the life of me why he had lady deathstike kicking the living SHITE out of wolvie I mean the guy is a very skilled fighter but if i didnt know who wolvie was and I just went to see the movie I would just have thought he was a guy who cant fight but has claws and is saved because he can heal him self and also more than half the actors were miscast in thier roles... SMH thanks Singer.Superman returns LOL dont get me started.

Captain Obvious said it all... obviously.

Waiting for a title change... "Out of the Closet" or "Back to the Future" or "X-Men - What Time Is It"... nothing original here.

How can Colussus be in it when he was a teen in the last movie? Oh, of course, time jumps, flashbacks, whatever, yeah yeah yeah....

@SpideyQuad- Michigan, actually.

@YoungThanos- Millar was brought in as a creative consultant. Studios hire people like that all the time. By the way, who cares if it's a shared universe? Fox only has the Fantastic Four and X-Men and it's obvious they won't ever be put together. So why make a big deal out of characters sharing the same universe when they are all on the same team?

I see the word Apocalyptic and so help me, I can't help but think of the big A himself. I know he hasn't nothing to do with DOFP, but God I want to see him sooooo bad. Soooo bad.

I'll forgive him for Superman Returns if he corrects the timeline. Fair trade?
