Hugh Jackman On His Hesitance To Return As WOLVERINE Yet Again

We'll be seeing Jackman in action as The Wolverine this summer and in 2014's X-Men: Days Of Future Past, but what about afterwards? Here, the Oscar nominated actor comments on his hesitance to continue in the role as well as what went wrong with X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

In his impressive career, Hugh Jackman has done what few actors have done and consistently play one superhero on the big screen for over a decade. He starred as Wolverine (the role which really launched his career) in the X-Men trilogy, as well as the spin-off X-Men Origins: Wolverine. He also cameo'd in X-Men: First Class, and will be returning to the iconic role in not one, but two upcoming films: The Wolverine on July 26th, and X-Men: Days Of Future Past on July 18th, 2014. There has been speculation as to whether or not Jackman will keep playing the character after Bryan Singer's "inbetweenquel", as he isn't signed on for any more films. Producer Hutch Parker recently said that a third solo Wolverine movie would have to have the right story to even consider it, and speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Jackman confirms this. However, he doesn't sound quite as optimistic about his future as Logan. "I wasn’t even sure after the first [stand-alone] film if I would do another. I won’t say never, because I’m still loving it. But there would have to be a pretty compelling reason." Parker weighs in, saying that recasting Wolverine would be "blasphemous".

Additionally, Jackman looks back on developing 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Commonly considered one of the worst comic book movies in recent history, the spin-off is often criticized for including/introducing far too many characters at once without properly developing them. In response to this, Jackman says that it was more like a fourth X-Men movie than a solo film starring Wolverine. "...we could have done better. Somehow the first Wolverine movie ended up looking like the fourth X-Men — just with different characters. I left unsure if we’d achieved our goal, which was to make sure people understood my character." Would you like to see Hugh Jackman return for more X-Men and/or Wolverine movies, or should someone else get a shot at playing Logan? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

So many things made Origins suck - but Jackman's performance wasn't one of them.
Gotta give it to the guy for his passion and dedication in bringing the Wolverine to life on the silver screen.
It seems to me he had a real affinity for the character evident since we first saw his character look around over his shoulder in the bar cage-fight in the original X-Men film.
So whether or not this is the PERFECT Wolverine film - THANKYOU Hugh for everything you've done for the character.

I would like to see him control his own wolverine movie without Fox's input.

I'm really proud of Hugh for not being a money hungry jerk. Even though we all know he probably gets payed tons of cash the guy really cares about perusing the role of Wolverine! :D

Fox-Men will whither away without Jackman as Wolverine.

Why? people are actually asking that..really.

Hugh is a great actor and performer...we have been lucky to have him as Wolverine..BUT..if either this new one or DOFP pisses off the fans and creates a shit storm, he is DONE.

I think Hugh has couple more movies in him! I say F it. Don't fix whats not broken, and Hugh's Wolverine is most definitely far from broken. Keep up the good work Hugh!

Go ahead and take a break Jackman. Know one has been more dedicated to a character like you. Just retire on a high note, don't end the charecter with a repeat of origins. Even though I kinda like the movie, could've been better.

Actually would like to see Hugh returning again for Old Man Logan.

Make another movie or a trilogy in 2-3 years. Make him look older. Make it take place in the future, a future similar to Batman Beyond (2100 AD perhaps). Would love a Hulk cameo also.

As bad as Wolverine: Origins seemed to be, it was actually pretty good compared to Catwoman and Electra.

Much like Christopher Reeve playing Superman, Hugh Jackman has made a movie version of Wolverine that will always be the standard against which any other actor will be compared. Like Reeve, even when the movies weren't all that great, Jackman did a great job with the character. His dedication to getting in shape has been amazing, and he's given Logan a very likeable character.

Yeah, the character is different than the comic book version. Jackman is too tall and not berserk enough. So that gives the next guy somewhere to go.

@TelaVizion -

Agree!!

ITs like Hugh has no real control or imput on his own movies, specially his fourth movie being Wolverine.

Kind of sad, being the "big star" many fans think he is

Actually Hugh has been producer on both standalone Wolverine films, both the ill-fated 'Origins' and this new one.

Now that could mean he has just fronted his own money but he most definately has had creative input on both films.

Like I said. So much more than any one person makes a film and even with the best intentions it can go tits-up.
I think more of the problem was with the screenplay personally.

I used to not like Hugh as Logan. But he's growing on me. But they just didn't get Logans psychology right. He's a man who did a lot of dirt. Killed a lot of people who got close to Romolus. If Fox would've went that route with Origins I think it would've been a better film in terms of character development. But I digress. Those guys think they can write better than Comic Book Writers who make thousands of dollars for Marvel.

And to back up what I mean by doing dirt. I mean he killed people who were sometimes defenseless. He wasn't always on military missions like they tried to make in origins.

Old Man Logan. Make it happen. Little grey in the hair and Hugh Jackman keeps the character. Fox vs Marvel stuff will keep it from happening but one can wish.

I think Hugh should do one more solo film to round out a trilogy. There are many storylines that can be adapted that I think would work well as a send off for Jackman

It's not Jackman I hate, it's Fox Studios! Unless Fox looses the rights to all the X-Men, I couldn't really care less if they recast Wolvie or keep Hugh till he's in his 80's and rolling in a wheelchair himself.
