Mark Millar Shares His Thoughts On Wolverine's Role In Future X-MEN Movies

20th Century Fox creative consultant Mark Millar talks here about ensuring that Wolverine isn't overused in any future X-Men movies (including Days of Future Past) and shares his thoughts on The Wolverine screenplay and more.

"When I got this job they’d started shooting a couple of weeks," Mark Millar told SciFi now in a recent interview when asked about his involvement with James Mangold's The Wolverine. "The screenplay to The Wolverine is really, really terrific – I’m really, really delighted with it. Obviously the casting’s all be really good, the director’s brilliant." However, when he was quizzed about whether the character works best on the big screen as part of a team or by himself, the comic book writer looked back on his time at Marvel in order to explain how he think Wolverine's solo adventures can mix with those he goes on as part of the X-Men. "You know, I wrote the Wolverine comic twice – I did the Old Man Logan story and Wolverine: Enemy Of The State – and I don’t think it detracts having individual Wolverine adventures from the X-Men. He’s like a lone wolf character, he disappears and does his own thing sometimes and then he comes back and hangs out at the mansion, so it does feel quite natural to for him to be in these movies."

Many fans have found fault with the amount of attention Wolverine received in the first three X-Men movies. This is something that Millar can relate to, and he had this to say about finding the right balance of how the character is used. "You don’t want to have him out there all the time, because I think if you’ve got him in X-Men and Wolverine movies and they’re all running at the same time, it’s a little bit too much but as long as you’re smart with it and there’s a lot of other characters to explore as well. The X-Men universe is about the same size as the Marvel universe in terms of the number of titles it sustains at any one time, so there’s a ton of stuff to play with there and a lot of characters I’d like to explore there too." Do you agree with Millar's comments? Would you like to see more Wolverine solo movies or is it more interesting to see him fighting alongside his fellow mutants? Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place!

Make an Old Man Logan movie. Clint Eastwood as Wolverine, Harrison Ford as Hawkeye.

It would rule so hard.

Mark say's :"The X-Men universe is about the same size as the Marvel universe." Im sorry but has Mark been reading Marvel lately?? There aint no X men Or marvel Univers anymore Marvel took that wall down with the new Marvel now titles, So how in hell is he gonna stand there and act like Marvel is still divided??? Everything is mashed up now in the comics and as far as i can trow it the comics is and will allways be the source material!! And yess i know about the right and all that legal s#!t, as far as im concerned Disney should buy back all the rights!

As MOVIES, I don't understand why people hate X-Men, X2 or First Class, especially the former two.

As comic accurate adaptions, okay yeah I can see why.

Although, I still think people are way too harsh here on X1 and X2.

I feel like Singer did the best he could with the source CONSIDERING studio interference.

Singer said no to leather suits in DOFP so thats a clear indication he cares about the source material

That was my problem with xmen, they focused to much on wolverine and then gave him his own bloody film anyways! Everything that was explored in the xmen films about wolverine could of been done in his own spin off films, which is I hope they don't centre it around Logan in days of future past

I hardly HOPE Wolverine isnt the star of Days of future past.

It will be an ambitious sequel and the most ensemble movie to date, so Wolverine should yield the lead to the whole team this time.

Hopefully Singer and Millar respect this key factor this time

I believe Marvel Studios would treat the X-Men as their own separate universe as well. When I say that, I don't mean characters can't crossover in Avenger events — the X-Men and many of their conflicts are so personal to them as a mutant race. While Shi'ar invasions and Sentinel genocides are wide-scoped, the story told on film should stay focused on the mutants. X-Men stories would be treated as their own contained world within the MCUniverse, as I expect from the cosmic side with Guardians Of The Galaxy and the enclosed urban crime fighter world for Daredevil and Punisher.

I too am tired of the over saturation of Logan/Wolverine in the movies but i must say while it is not a Wolverine saturated tale, Logan is a crucial point to the Days of Future past story. He is kind of arrogant but I've no doubt that Mark Millar will not let the future of the X-Fox universe be complete shit. I do however wish Marvel/Disney would just get the rights to all of there characters back and then we could have a multi-billion dollar cohesive Marvel Cinematic Universe.

@AcidHeart Well i think what he meant was the context of the X-Man franchise itself. you could make a whole universe with just the X-Man, as long as you don't screw the Canon of the series it can and could work. or Chris Nolan's Batman universe, its just batman, in Gotham, and that's it, batman and his rouge gallery.

The X-Men Universe is as big as the rest of the Marvel Universe, in terms of the amount of X-titles there have been, as well as the amount of characters and teams.

Think about how many teams and solo characters that could have movies, if they wanted.

X-Men
X-Factor
X-Force
Excalibur
New Mutants
Weapon X
Alpha Flight
Generation X
Wolverine
Deadpool
Gambit
Cable

Think about it. You could start with an X-Men movie and continuously spin-off new franchises. Each team really has a different function.

X-Factor could use either the concept of a covert team sponsored by the government or a team of investigators. X-Force could be about a wetworks team. New Mutants would follows the students. Excalibur could be a team that had fantasy adventures. And so on.

If handled correctly, there's a lot they could do with the X-Men franchise. They could carry this on for years.

dont really know which universe is bigger, if X-men one, The Avengers one, Fantastic Four or even Justice League one

but one thing is for sure, the XMen world is huge.

too many years of history, characters and teams.

Fox is really smart by hiring Mark Millar and getting Bryan Singer back. These two together will make bigger and better movies in the near future. Haters will end loving them. Time will tell

All this crap talk about wolverine is bs, wolverine is the best character of the xmen. How boring can a Scott summers movie be! No other character can pull off a solo flic get real.

Wolverine sucks ass. All the scenes involving him are exactly the same.

Jackman in a tank-top, Jackman screaming into the sky because someone has wronged him, Jackman extends claws, Jackman runs with claws extended yelling...Jackman gets knock on his ass until he finally wins.

Rinse and repeat. -_-

How bout that.-_-

Wolverine is to the X-Men what Steve Carell is to The Office. It would probably work, but the fact can't be escaped that he is a pivotal character whose character adds a lot of positive and negative to any team dynamic. He was such a big part of the original trilogy, and has been in the X-Men comics almost constantly over the past few decades that to me it would be just wrong to leave him out.

I think it's pretty safe to say that, for the most part, Wolverine was the most popular character in the X-Men universe when the first X film was being made, so to appeal to mass audiences, he had to be a main character. And Haters aside, Hugh did a pretty decent job bringing Logan to a non-animated format. But that meant that the popularity of the character to non-comic book fans equaled more Wolvie for X2. It's just marketing. If I can get my chick to see a CBM so she can check out Jackman's pec's, then the studio just sold twice as many tickets to me as they would have otherwise.

apart from x-men 2 all of fox's comic book movies aren't nothing special they have their moments but that's about it.

as for wolverine old man logan now that is i think mark millar's best comic book run,it should be adapted into a animated movie.

thewonderer - 1/15/2013, 2:04 PM
It doesn't make their crap movies justified,

but it does make their good movies exemplified.

Like why do people want Fox to give up X-Men? Even if Marvel Studios had it, I really do not think they'd utilize the property for at least the decade if that.

Because of Fox, we got talents like Fassbender as Magneto, Stewart as Xavier, Jackman as Wolverine, etc.

I trust in Fox NOW because First Class was amazing, The Wolverine looks great with a good director and script, and DOFP is in good hands with good writers and a specific great comic to base it off of.

In other words, Fox looks to be going in the right direction here.

Wanting a shared universe (trying to fix continuity), hiring talent, etc.
