There are a little over two weeks to go before we all finally get to watch X-Men '97, the long-awaited X-Men: The Animated Series revival which now has an official episode count.

The longest live-action MCU TV show to date is She-Hulk: Attorney at Law at 9 episodes. On the animated front, What If...?'s first two seasons share the record at 9 episodes apiece, but X-Men '97 will beat all of them with an impressive 10 instalments (according to a press release sent out by Disney).

Work has already begun on a second season, while there have been rumblings about a third batch of episodes as well. Back to the show's return this month, though, and we're hearing it will premiere with two instalments.

Assuming we then get one episode per week, the X-Men '97 finale should drop on May 15.

In related news, scooper @CanWeGetToast claims (via Toonado.com) that Your Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man (formerly known as Spider-Man: Freshman Year) will also be 10 episodes long, with each chapter running for roughly 30 minutes.

It was at the San Diego Comic-Con when we first learned of plans for the series, and aside from that title change, it's been all quiet since. Still, exciting things are clearly on the horizon for Marvel Animation.

"X-Men'97 revisits the iconic era of the 1990s as The X-Men, a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them, are challenged like never before, forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future," reads a brief synopsis.

Cal Dodd (Wolverine), Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm), George Buza (Beast), Adrian Hough (Nightcrawler), Lenore Zann (Rogue), and Chris Britton (Mister Sinister) will all reprise their X-Men: The Animated Series roles in X-Men '97.

However, Catherine Disher, the original Jean Grey, is now voicing Dr. Valerie Cooper. Chris Potter, the original Gambit, is now playing Cable. Lawrence Bayne, the original Cable, is now playing X-Cutioner. Ron Rubin, the original Morph, is now playing President Robert Edward Kelly. Alyson Court, the original Jubilee, will take on the role of Abscissa.

Ray Chase is the new Cyclops, and he'll be joined by Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, JP Karliak as Morph, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, Ross Marquand as Professor X, Giu Augustini as Sunspot, Gil Birmingham as Forge, and Eric Bauza as the Sentinels.

X-Men '97 is set to premiere on Disney+ on March 20. Check back here soon for more on the series!

I miss thentime when a series will have 20+ episodes.

WruceBayne
WruceBayne - 3/5/2024, 12:15 AM
@vectorsigma - I miss those days. The episodes back in the day were all self contained but you got a new episode everyday. I remember rushing home from school to watch Batman: The Animated Series at 3:30. Those were the good ole days.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 3/5/2024, 12:28 AM
@WruceBayne - yeah, the streaming model made it extinct. It was good while it lasted
WruceBayne
WruceBayne - 3/5/2024, 12:47 AM
@vectorsigma - absolutely
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/5/2024, 2:26 AM
@vectorsigma - I don't. All of those shows (that I watched) had a bunch of filler. And not just serialized shows, but the episodic shows as well.

Think it really depends on what story they wanna tell and how long the episodes are. A season needs less with 1 hour episodes than with 30 minute episodes.
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 3/5/2024, 4:34 AM
@bkmeijer1 - i agree that the fillers sometimes are dragging. But that adds to character development.

And heavily marketed as a sequel to the 97 series and even attempted tonuse the old animation style, x-men shouldve followed that model. Oh well, the times we live in
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/5/2024, 6:24 AM
@vectorsigma - I agree. Shows like Avatar did benefit a lot from the filler episodes. Added a lot to the characters, and that was missing from the live action show.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 3/5/2024, 10:12 AM
@WruceBayne - which days are you referring to? About all self contained episodes.
WruceBayne
WruceBayne - 3/5/2024, 10:32 AM
@Slotherin - I was saying that with most episodes we got the complete story for that episode as opposed to today when the season tells one ongoing story through an 8-10 episode season.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 3/5/2024, 10:52 AM
@WruceBayne - ah. Then yeah. Sorta.
I was initially going to point to multiple episode stories in both Batman TAS and X-Men.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 3/5/2024, 10:54 AM
@WruceBayne - I feel like Spectacular Spider-Man blended it well by there being arcs that spanned on, but most episodes being something you can enjoy as a contained story.
I liked that about Batman TAS, there were multiple self-contained episodes or sequel episodes and maybe a few stories told in 2 parters like I believe Two-Face's debut fittingly was.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 3/5/2024, 10:55 AM
@WruceBayne - Robin's Reckoning was one of my favorites
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 3/5/2024, 11:07 AM
@bkmeijer1 - and i might not even try watching the live action series. But good example on the point
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/5/2024, 11:35 AM
@vectorsigma - you won't miss anything, unless you wanna see a streamlined version of the greatest hits in live-action

@bkmeijer1 - thanks for the tip!
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 3/5/2024, 2:22 AM
I thought they were already confirmed to have 10 or 12, so no surprise there it's the longest. Do wonder if both shows still get two seasons, and if they premiere before Secret Wars.
