The director who helped launch the X-Men said that he likes to "trick audiences into thinking they're seeing fireworks" when he's really commenting on social issues.

Bryan Singer, the director of the first two installments of the X-Men franchise, said that he is ready to return to the property. At the South Korean Pusan International Film Festival, Singer said:

"I'm still looking to possibly returning to the X-Men franchise. I've been talking to Fox about it. I love Hugh Jackman. I love the cast."

Singer said that he enjoys using the X-Men and science fiction to comment on important real-world issues:

"The excitement about working in science fiction and fantasy is — the stories, if they are good, are about the human condition."

It's time for new blood! And, while we're at it, can we please get rid of the all-leather X-Men costumes? I mean, look at that picture above...that doesn't look like the X-Men!

I don't know. He did make XM 1 and X2 which are great, but he did make Superman Returns and that wasn't faithful to the comics at all, but it was solid. I just don't know. I'd rather they just start with First Class and get a fresh take on the X-Men in there, with a new director and cast.

Huh? How is he a sell out?

Im sure we will be getting a whole host of comments about how Singer [frick]ed up the X Men because Wolverine wasn't wearing yellow [frick]ing banana spandex and all sorts of other pedantic crap. The dude made one very good and one excellent movie. Anyone that claims to be an X Men fan, that is, actually reads comics and not just looks at the pictures, should know that the X Men were always about reflecting the injustices of society and as Singer says, the human condition. Sure they also had awesome action and stuff and maybe he should have done some more visually, but action nuts are always going to bemoan the lack of action in any movie no matter how good it is. Apparently TDK wasn't great because there was no action! Jesus Christ, just look at explosions on Youtube or something if thats the most important thing to you in a movie. Anyway, Rant over...commence the "Singer is gay and stupid" campaign.

@Ror: Dude, I didn't say Wolverine should wear spandex yellow--the brown costume would have been nice--but look at that picture: it looks like a teeny-bopper biker gang, not the X-Men. And, c'mon, Wolverine's mask is one of the most iconic masks in comics and we never get to see it!

Bijous - 10/11/2009, 8:23 AM
@Ror: I get where you're coming from and I saw some social commentary in Singer's films, but he didn't really make any controversial moves with these films. He could have gone way deeper into the social comparisons between the civil rights movement--which was the basis for Stan Lee's original concept--and the gay rights movement--which is the current basis in the comics (X-Men are even living in San Francisco).

I don't have anything against Singer personally or anything(but we are f*cking done professionally), I just want to see a new take on the franchise, and bring some new life back into it.

@Tyler: I agree, which was my first statement (and the first thing I thought when I read this headline): the franchise should move forward, but let's bring in someone with some fresh eyes.

Bijous I actually wasn't referencing your post with that! We posted at the same time. And I'm not saying that I wouldn't like to see some variation on the costume myself, I;m just sick of people saying the movies sucked simply BECAUSE of the lack of costumes and stuff from the comic. As for the making the movies more in depth and controversial, dude i really think he did the absolute most he could with a big budget studio sci fi movie. Can you imagine the fanboy outrage if he had anyway! Some people already think those movies were too "talky" as is.

Well this is good news!!

X2 & 1 was [frick]ing good, he'll bring back the magic of X-MEN and we can forget about the other two!!! ; D

@Ror: How would you have Singer progress? What angle/storyline would you want to see him take it in?
InTylerWeTrust
InTylerWeTrust - 10/11/2009, 8:33 AM
Singer did a great job with the first 2 X-movies. Sure, the costumes weren't the best, and he may not have been THE most faithful to the comics (he was still faithful, but not towards some of the characters), but he made damn fine X-films.

Bijous - 10/11/2009, 8:36 AM
@Tyler: I'll ask you the same question I asked Ror: how should the storyline progress? What's next? Sinister? Apocalypse? Shi'Ar?
InTylerWeTrust
InTylerWeTrust - 10/11/2009, 8:37 AM
Well, Apocalypse/Sinister are due for their screen time for sure. They would be the next logical step in the franchise IMO.

At least it doesn't say Bret Rattner or that would suck.

I think Singer should come back. X2 was really cool and a new trilogy with Apocalypse would be the shit.

By the way check out Green Arrow:Savage Hunt

Here's the plot run-down:

X1: There are mutants. One mutant leader is good and wants to be friends with humans; the other leader is bad and wants to turn everyone into mutants or kill them off.
X2: Parents hate mutant children and so does the government.
X3: Many mutants want to be "cured" and those that don't should be anyway.
X4: ?

MarkCassidy - 10/11/2009, 8:40 AM
I'm not even saying I want to see him return to it, I wouldn't mind but new blood is good too..provided they don't go all Ratner on it again. If he was to continue, I would love to see either Sinister or Apocalypse. I would actually love to see Angel become Archangel more than most things. For continuity I guess I wouldn't mind Ben Foster again, but how wrong was he for that role! I mean hes a great actor, but Angel??

Cap, I don't hate you, I just hate your damn posts!

Did somebody say....BRET RATTNER?!

Bijous
Bijous - 10/11/2009, 8:43 AM
@Ror/Tyler: I think Sinister is the next logical plotline for the franchise because it plays into the previous themes (see my comment above) about creating/curing mutants, etc. In the comics, Sinister was working behind-the-scenes with DNA for years, even experimenting with Cyclops and Jean Grey (can we go back to calling her Marvel Girl ever?).

Cool bring on singer

but it must b hard with the costumes tho cuz lez face it if u were 2 put the actual costumes into a real life move...erm it would suck..trying to take hugh jackman seriously as wolverine while seeing him run around in yellow (or brown) spandex would bother me and look a lil gay on the big screen...hmm i dunno...no leather and no spandex please
Bijous
Bijous - 10/11/2009, 9:02 AM
@TheLivingWeapon: I totally disagree. You're basically taking the "superhero" out of it by removing the costumes, turning it into a Wanted-style sci-fi series. If you're gonna do a superhero movie, then don't be ashamed to make it a superhero movie, is what I say.

InTylerWeTrust - 10/11/2009, 9:21 AM
Let's get Snyder for everything now right? Superman, X-Men, give him Fantastic Four while we're at it!

Seriously, I see this guy's name suggested for just about every CBM nowadays, it's quite repetitive.

We NEED Singer back. A new director could work out but look at Gavin Hood. Fox knows Singer is money and would give him the freedom to make the X movie he wants to make. If youre mad Singer left X Men, why not let him return. If anyone needs to leave a comic franchise its Sam Raimi. Spiderman 2 rocked, but enough of the tragic villains looking for forgiveness and MJ in trouble.

I agree with Bijous, a superhero movie should show superheroes. Watchmen was good, despite everyone wearing spandex outfits. Hasn't Marvel proved that it worked with Iron Man, Spiderman and the Hulk?

We have our non-suit wearing Heroes on television already, I don't need to see the same thing in theatres as well.

Suit up!!! Oh, and I don't have a problem with Singer. The problem with new blood, means new direction and I would love to see how Singer would clean up Radner's X-3 situation.

@stop/Bijous: Sorry, LivingWeapon, I also agree that costumes are a must in a superhero flick. Yes, they can be done poorly and cheese out the film, but they can also be done brilliantly. It's part of the comic book "convention" that they wear costumes. You just have to accept that going into the film. Leaving it out is like taking salt out of your diet: it leaves everything bland.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 10/11/2009, 9:43 AM
But a sellout is someone who compromises their ideals or principals and such for money. Singer made some movies..then he made another movie, and now he wants to revisit the first set of movies. How does that in any way make him a sell out? When he left the X franchise it was actually in pretty good hands with Mathew Vaughn at the time..it was only after he left that Ratner came aboard. And Supes Returns turned out, at least imo, to be a damn good movie. I'm sure Singer would have loved to make a sequel..hopefully with less reverence of Donner and some more action(Dead super kid would help too!) but its not his call.
