X-Men: First Class NOT a Reboot Says Film's Director

Matthew Vaughn confirms that the X-Men prequel fits into the continuity set by the previous movies; and he isn't worried at all that too many mutants will be in it.

Here are a few of the highlights from MTV News' interview with KICK-ASS director Matthew Vaughn regarding his latest project, X-Men: First Class.

Regarding following the X-Men movie legacy:

"I have to give a lot of credit to Bryan Singer, because he came up with a very clever, very interesting way of integrating the characters into recent history — not necessarily too recent, though. I don't want to spoil it for you, but when I read the script that was around in May, I thought, 'This is a really clever idea.'"

Regarding continuity; will X-Men First Class use the same timeline and be "an official, in-continuity prequel"?

"Yeah, I would say absolutely so. You've got Magneto and [Charles] Xavier when they first meet. The backdrop of what's going on in the world when they first meet, it's very interesting. You see them and their relationship develop and play out with this major political event in the background."

Regarding the 'Too Many Mutants' worry:

"In terms of having a lot of mutants, it doesn't feel that busy. I don't feel worried about it. I think it will be really cool to see all these guys doing their stuff. I'm very keen that it has a lot of heart, this movie," he added. "You understand where these characters have come from, and you obviously know where they're going, but to see that very important point of their lives where they're discovering their power and working out their ethical take on what to do with their power — it's a very interesting story to tell. I want it to be a very good film, and I'm working very hard to create one for you."

Will Scott Summers (Cyclops) & Jean Grey (umm, Jean Grey) get more attention in this film with Wolverine out of the way?

"I can't shed any light on that at all. I think that would be giving too much away. You'll just have to wait and see. It's going to be worth it."

Good. I would prefer if they stick to the established continuity.

Damnit! My hopes for the original five are deflated now. Oh well, hopefully Vaughn makes a good film regardless.

Well, I wasn't really trusting that information until now. I guess this could officially be the 1st "good" news attached to this movie.

@ MPP - because that is his latent/hidden mutant power. The ability to be in everything, all of the time, all at the same time, without the need for rational explanation*

* please see all X-Men books, Avengers books, Alpha Flight stories, Marvel Team Ups and miscellaneous Marvel books that are in desperate need for an increase in sales for reference and relevance on the above statement.

So if it's staying with the continuity,
Iceman and Angel will not be in it.
If they are in it then this dude's a liar.
If they aren't in it, people are going to be pissed.
They've put themselves in quite the predicament here.

Although it has a great director, I'm sure that it's going to end up just as big a mess as X-Men Origins: Wolverine!

That movie was "in-continuity" and now it looks like the introduction of characters like Cyclops and Emma Frost will have no relevence in this film and Deadpool is going to be a reboot anyway! (probably for the best on both counts though to be honest)

But who really cares about a movie from Fox when we've got Captain America, Thor, Green Lantern and Cowboys & Aliens also coming out in 2011!
Deathlok
Deathlok - 8/3/2010, 9:55 AM
@Jazzman, Poni

I have noticed several articles about this. But I think the articles themselves are confusing people. We've known that Bryan Singer has been involved with this project. Why would he reboot something that he created? The cast was also confirmed long ago with no mention of Iceman or Angel, who would have to be present for the original team. I think people are just getting their hopes up that this new movie will restore some sense of coolness to the X-Men films and they want to believe it's a reboot. But it's obviously not. Bottom line, Singer sucks at comic book movies.

Well. I stand corrected. THIS is the first bit of encouraging news I've heard about this film. Thanks for clarifying this.

Pietro: You can bet your house that Wolverine appears in this film. Can you honestly imagine an X-film that does NOT feature Wolverine front and center in every scene? A few of us would be quite happy, especially if this film actually featured the REAL "first class", but we'd be drowned out by the legions of Wolverine fanboys who will scream bloody murder if the whole thing does NOT revolve around their boy.

As I have said before...prequel...reboot. Same thing in this case. Unless they are going to come back with another continuity film after this that follows up XMen 3 with the same prior cast, this is still going to end up being a reboot, in a manner of speaking. Do we really think they are going to do that?

OdinsBeard - 8/3/2010, 10:04 AM
ever since i saw kick-ass a few weeks ago i've completely changed my tune - i think Vaughn can pull off a great movie! im not a huge x-men fan anyway so i just hope this is a good film with a good story. and with the cast they have i have confidence.

i don't see how Wolverine could be in this at all. if this isn't a reboot then he shouldn't be. in X1, no one knew who he was, not even Xavier. He has no place here.

Wolverine is everywhere! [frick]! In comics he is in like every [frick]ing cover of Marvel's Heroic Age and now he is [frick]ing up Marvel's screentime. Next thing you know when Deadpool releases, he will follow the Logan's path. [frick] you FOX for FOX sake just kill yourselves.

@ DGr8nova

If you haven't noticed, Deadpool has already followed in Wolverine's footprints. the guy is in almost just as much stuff as Wolvie now.

Its a shame, because Deadpool used to be an awesome character until they tunred him into a complete moron. He used to just talk a lot, like Spiderman. but now he's just...well, a complete moron of a character.
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 8/3/2010, 10:13 AM
well that sucks.

@ CDB: that doesn't matter. if they want him in it he will be in it.

They can fix most of the continuity stuff for one reason. X-Men comics involve quite a bit of Time travel and Time travelers. I think that's how he updated it in current time yet not completely as he kind of says in this interview.

CDB: I completely agree. I used to love reading Deadpool. The stories featuring him and Siryn were especially excellent as they delved into the character a lot and looked at his feelings towards being scarred etc while also being great fun. Now, they're just trash and as he's now nothing more than a jabbering idiot, and barely likeable or amusing IMO...just irritatng in all honesty.
RedDevil
RedDevil - 8/3/2010, 10:19 AM

Yeah I know, Deadpool was one of my favs when he used to joke around and kick major ass and have an interesting plot, now he is a douche with literally no personality but mindless killing and with the deadpool corps stuff, I really haven't been following him in comics. Heck I do not even know what's going on with him now, is he still funny? Most likely. Is he still cool? I have no [frick]ing clue.

this is the list i wish for an x-men movie under marvel:

1.x-men first class(original five WITHOUT wolverine)
2.then they can follow up with a movie titled Astonishing X-Men.
3.Genosha
4.Sentinels!(not just the head in the danger room in x3.pft)

whedon shud have done this instead of avengers. haha

This article confirms nothing other than the fact that Vaughn is a walking, talking, breathing contradiction on two legs. In one article he states that he will do as JJ Abrams did with Star Trek, which was a REBOOT, and here he states that it is "absolutely so" a prequel. How the hell couldn't we be confused??? This movie is still not confirmed to be one more than the other. When he gives his explanation as to how it would be a prequel, all he says is that he is using the same characters and that they would meet up in the same way as they did in the previous films. Well isn't that what Abrams did with Star Trek even though he actually DID reboot??? Yeah, this guy makes loads of sense. He just confirmed that he knows jack shit about the difference between "prequel" and "reboot".
ManThing
ManThing - 8/3/2010, 10:51 AM
oh well. Yeah this is Fox.

There's no way they would be able to keep Wolverine out of the movie because they think that's what we want.

I don't WANT this thing to be a trainwreck.

But the established continuity is a cluster[frick] of stupidity, and if they don't take steps to fix things it will end up just like the last two.
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 8/3/2010, 10:58 AM
jazzman@ I know the difference between a reboot and a prequel. I don't buy this is going to end up being a prequel in this case no matter what they claim. They may say it is going to be, but 3 years down the road I would be willing to wager we will see another XMen movie with this cast of characters and actors instead of the old cast from the prior movies and that, in essence, smells more of reboot to me. Time will tell.
Shaman
Shaman - 8/3/2010, 10:58 AM
Tea- Did he not say that he would do as Abrams did with Star Trek? Does he actually know that it was a reboot? Does he not realise that even though James T. Kirk was in it, it wasn't a prequel? Maybe he's dumb enough to think he's doing a prequel only because he's using the same characters but he's actually rebooting all along? The guy's as clear as morning piss.

jazzman- he said he would do like Star Trek, not Star Wars. Abrams' Star Trek was a reboot, not a prequel. So Vaughn really doesn't know what he's saying.

Tea- EXACTLY!!! I really don't think he knows wht he's talking about. So now... it's quite clear that nothing is confirmed yet. Gawd... why can't they just come out and say it once and for all.
