BOURNE 5 Kicks Off Production Next Week; Matt Damon Teases Plot Details

That's exactly the question star Matt Damon & director Paul Greengrass asked themselves before embarking on Bourne 5 and now a new interview with Damon has shed some light on the answer.

It's been eight long years since super spy Jason Bourne disappeared into the night by sea in The Bourne Ultimatum, and after years of fans clamoring for more, Jason Bourne is finally ready to resurface. However, it should be noted that the world he left was vastly different to the world he'll reenter next July.

Speaking with Buzzfeed News, while promoting his October release The Martian, star Matt Damon spoke in length about his upcoming fourth Bourne adventure and why it's taken so long for him to reprise his most popular role to date. Damon started out by first reflecting on the original trilogy and how the films managed to serve as a sort of commentary on the Bush administration: “We always looked at those movies as really about the Bush presidency, and so we kind of had to wait for the world to change... What does the character have to say?”

To answer his own question, Damon went on to reveal that even though he and director Paul Greengrass would revisit the idea of a new Bourne story every once in a while over the past eight years, it wasn't until Edward Snowden's NSA whistleblowing revelations that an idea for Bourne 5 actually materialized: “Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world... It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.

Damon also confirmed that Bourne 5, which will also star Julia Stiles, Tommy Lee Jones, and Alicia Vikander, kicks off production sometime this week in Greece and will eventually conclude in Las Vegas: “We’re starting in Greece, you know, the beginning of democracy... And the movie ends in Las Vegas, the most grotesque incarnation of….” He didn't finish that last sentence, instead opting for a laugh and letting fans imagine what kind of new predicament the super soldier will find himself in when he makes his long-awaited return.

So, what do you guys think? Are you ready to see Jason Bourne kick more ass? Sound off with your thoughts below!

Will Renner be back? I wasn't crazy about Legacy but I think he should be back in some capacity.

Sounds like Cap 2 and a little bit of civil war with all the spying and civil liberties plot points

I agree, Legacy wasn't the greatest, but I would love to see how Renner's character is doing. Not a team-up movie, but maybe a scene or two would be nice. It's really great to have Damon back as the lead. The original trilogy is pretty important to me, they're some of the best spy movies there's even been.

Too bad Matt Damon's career is basically over.

He's box office poison now.

Very much looking forward to this. But I loved Legacy as well so I hope to see a sequel to that story too. And after that a team-up would be sublime.

Lol...Damon's career over? That's funny. The guy is at the point in his career where he can pick and choose whatever role he wants. One of the better actors of our generation.

And the Martian looks bloody fantastic.

Cool. I've enjoyed all 4 previous Bourne movies. Whether I watch this in the cinemas depends on what comes out around the same time.

Never saw the Renner Identity, seemed like weak-sauce trying to wring the franchise dry by adding a totally new character (I mean, I would have had less of an issue if they had just cast Renner as Bourne). So damn glad Bourne is back, and looking forward to this.

“Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world... It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”

Except, as has been pointed out elsewhere, The Bourne Ultimatum answered ALL those questions about Bourne living in a post-Snowden world. Hell, Bourne himself was basically Snowden, teaming up with Landy to blow the whistle on Blackbriar and expose them for spying on and even assassinating US citizens.

This just makes me worry that they have nothing left to say with this franchise, and any future movies will just be retreading old ground. Which is why I'm 100% certain the franchise should've ended with Ultimatum.

The Bourne trilogy is up there with the greatest trilogies, IMO. In no particular order:

Star Wars
Lord of the Rings
The Dark Knight trilogy
Indiana Jones
Toy Story
Jason Bourne

Ironically, Damon is just now the age of David Webb from the original books... If I remember correctly he was in his late 30's in the first book and well into his 40s and even early 50s in the subsequent books... That was the fun of the character; older but still badass. Especially in Supremacy when he had to duel against a 20 something British Commando using the name Jason Bourne. Webb often had to resort to fighting dirty against these younger well trained foes, but he had that Batman type "will" to win no matter the odds. First 3 books were infinitely better than the movies, but I hardly think of the two mediums even being related beyond namesake... I'm glad Damon and Greengrass are back... I'd like to avoid the handcam this time around; some of the fight sequences make me motion sick.

Legacy was a disgrace for the Bourne franchise, Renner did it what he could to save the movie with his performance, sadly was not enough, that being said I hope they keep Aaron Cross out of this.

I didn't mind Legacy and I'm looking forward to seeing a Cross/Bourne event eventually. That would be sick.

I loved the original 3 films. But I hate there inspiration and bringing politics into it, come on. they need to be coming up with there own material. Still looking forward to it.

Then you've only seen the weakest of the original trilogy. The shakey cam made it almost unwatchable. You HAVE to see the first, it was outstanding.

I love The Bourne Trilogy. It's a shame Legacy wasn't as good as the first three movies, even though Jeremy Renner did a good job with what he had to work with.

Really excited for Bourne 5!!!
