INDIANA JONES Franchise Will Never Recast Harrison Ford's Adventurer According To Kathleen Kennedy

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has revealed that after making the upcoming Indiana Jones 5, they won't ever cast anyone other than Harrison Ford to bring the title character to life on screen...

In 2018, Lucasfilm released Solo: A Star Wars Story, a movie telling the origin of Han Solo. It was by no means a disaster and boasted a talented lead in Alden Ehrenreich. However, the actor was faced with the impossible task of following in the footsteps of the irreplaceable Harrison Ford, and we soon realized that the consensus was most fans didn't want to see someone else take on such an iconic role.

Talking to Vanity Fair (via ActionNewz.com), Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy reflected on the decision to recast Solo and brushed off any suggestions of one day finding a different actor to play Indiana Jones.

"There should be moments along the way when you learn things. That may have certainly been a learning moment. Some people have talked about how, well, maybe Solo should have been a TV show. But even doing Solo as a TV show without Harrison Ford as Han Solo...it's the same thinking," Kennedy explained, reflecting on past mistakes. "Maybe I should have recognized this before."

"We would never make Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford. Having just finished the fifth movie, I can tell you, there wasn't a day I wasn't on set where I wasn't like, 'Yes - this is Indiana Jones.'"

Indiana Jones 5 is likely to be Ford's last time playing the character, and it's a little surprising to think that Disney will then forever leave the franchise on the shelf. The expectation is that Ford will be de-aged for parts of James Mangold's upcoming movie, but you have to believe Lucasfilm is mulling over some ideas to continue the franchise, even if it's with a completely different lead character.

The movie will star Antonio Banderas, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Toby Jones, Thomas Kretschmann, and Mads Mikkelsen. It's set to be released on June 30, 2023.

Kathleen Kennedy is a terrible president for LucasFilm. She learns the wrong lessons.

If you can recast James Bond then you can recast Indiana Jones. You can do anything if you do it in the right way.

Solo had many problems but recasting the lead actor was not one of them.

@kingjoeg - Exactly. I actually thought Alden Ehrenreich was a pretty good choice for Han, the problems were elsewhere. But now she's acting like that was the main problem and it shows that she didn't get the real reasons why Solo flopped.

@kingjoeg - the only problem with Solo was they decided to make a Han Solo movie then commissioned writers to do their best to reverse engineer the story, instead of a talented writer coming up with an amazing original idea for a Han Solo origin film he wrote with heart and soul and all the attention to detail a fan who loves Star Wars would put into a passion project, then pitched that to Disney who decided it was great enough to make into a movie.

What they did was manufacture a heartless soulless cash grab to capitalize on the IP they just bought, and we could tell. That's what the entire sequel trilogy was, and we could tell. We don't want products, we want art with heart.

@kingjoeg - Every time she opens her mouth it's revealed she has no idea what she is talking about. This is the difference between Feige and Kennedy. Kennedy is a shallow fan of films in general, but Feige is a diehard Marvel fan. Which is what Lucasfilm needs, someone who knows and geeks over the intricacies of their franchises.

Because anyone with half a brain would know about the Young Indy Adventures and that multiple actors have already played the character. Also, when is indy going to get his eyepatch?

@kingjoeg - No Indiana Jones isn't James Bond. Even Ford agrees himself they can't recast him.

Literally Ford is the whole thing, why do we even need more Indiana Jones after he's done with it? Just make a new original property.

@TanukiTrooper - They played the young version of Indy. Lucas himself said he would never recast Ford as adult Indy.

@kingjoeg - and there been other actors playing Indy in the past.

@Nightwing1015 - I think they Retcon the eyepatch thing. They deleted the scenes with the old Indy when they put them in VHS and DVD.

Oh she may not recast Indiana Jones but I heard this movie will replace him with that woman who is co-starring after Jones dies.

I liked Lucas’ idea of originally giving Indy a daughter who follows in her fathers footsteps. As long as she’s cast well and written well the fans would most likely be receptive to her taking the family nick name, or adopting a new one like Montana Jones.

They were saying this way back when they were making Solo though (presumably to help court Ford for this film) , so it’s not a lesson learned from the results of making the Star Wars spin-off.

I’ve always found it a weird line to draw, since nobody had ever played Solo but Ford, but Indiana Jones had already been played by 4 or 5 different actors.

What they mean is they'll still replace him with a female

Not recasting Indy is the right move. Doesn't mean they can't do Indiana Jones style movies, potentially with legacy characters. I'd watch a fun, Indy-less Indy movie with Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Ke Huy Quan.

But she knows that The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles is canon and adittionally to Ford reprising the role there, 3 other actors played the part? + River Phoenix in Last Crusade. So there already are 5 canonical Indy actors.
Kyos

@AnungUnRama - Yet Harrison Ford is very much the actor people will associate with the role the most, even though Flanery spent more time actually playing Indy. Don't think most regular Indy fans could even name Corey Carrier and George Hall as actors who portrayed him. As far as mainstream pop culture awareness goes Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones.

This is so [frick]ing dumb. Stop blaming actors for shitty films made by directors and producers.

Well they don't need to do a tv show or recast him, since we already have the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles that does exactly both of those things.

As for continuing the franchise post-Indy 5, I think they could just continue with one of his kids or grandkids. From that show we know he has them. Or just with an older Short Round if they wanna keep the same timeframe

But they’ll happily replace him with Phoebe Waller-Bridges character in a Disney+ series. 🤷‍♂️

cool, then just stop making them altogether. The movies weren't great because Indy is this wholly interesting character, the movies were great because the stories and the adventure. If it's being led by a 98 year old man, then it's lost already

Indiana Jones died when River Phoenix died simple as that you kids aren't old enough to remember what went on back then
