MAD MAX Prequel FURIOSA Lands 2023 Theatrical Release Date From Warner Bros.

While they may have sacrificed their entire 2021 slate, it looks like Warner Bros. is still keen on releasing future films in theaters first, as they've officially set a release date for Furiosa!

Eight years after Academy Award-winner Charlize Theron (F9; The Old Guard) made the part iconic, Furiosa is returning to the silver screen in a big way with her very own film. Except this time, it'll be rising star Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen's GambitThe New Mutants) who takes on the role to tell the untold origins of one of Max Rockatansky's fiercest allies.

While their 2021 theatrical slate will be splitting time with HBO Max, Warner Bros. has officially announced that Furiosa will hit theaters on July 21, 2023. It'll open a week before an Untitled Marvel Studios Film, which could potentially be Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Academy Award-winner George Miller (Mad Max: Fury RoadThree Thousand Years of Longing) will return to the director's chair, utilizing a screenplay he co-wrote with Nico Lathouris (Mad Max: Fury Road).

In addition to Taylor-Joy in the title role, Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Love and Thunder; Avengers: Endgame) and Primetime Emmy-winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (WatchmenThe Matrix 4) will co-star. Details on their characters are currently being kept under wraps, but Hemsworth is rumored to be playing the villain.

Filming is expected to begin at the tail end of next year, presumably after Miller wraps Three Thousand Years of Longing and Hemsworth completes work on Marvel's Thor: Love and Thunder. Both are already shooting in Australia, where Fury Road also filmed, so it seems increasingly likely Furiosa will also film there.

In other news, Warner Bros. has also dated Dave Green's animated hybrid Coyote vs. Acme for July 21, 2023; and The Color Purple musical for December 20, 2023. Both are currently slated to open theatrically as well.

wonder how long it will be before Mad Max 5 come out. George Miller is getting up there in age

@dracula - Gibson could direct?

Wonder if Miller will ever cast Gibson in a new role. The drama around him has died down and wouldn't be the first time he casts a previous mad max actor in a new role

@dracula - I'd rather just see an "Old Man Max" movie with Gibson in the wasteland that continues the story of the original trilogy.

@HeavyMetal4Life - that would be cool, if he can play riggs again (lethal weapon 5 is in the works), then yeah he can play Max, but would be cool to see him on screen with hardy without giving max a multiverse

@dracula - well honestly Fury Road is pretty far removed from the original trilogy and feels like its its own thing. They even retconned his origin story with the flashbacks. But an older Mel Max would not mean that a younger Hardy Max could not exist in the same universe- just focusing on two different time periods.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I guess, although considering how long it takes for these movies to be made, would personally want to see Hardy finish his trilogy before they think about a fourth entry in the Gibson series

@dracula - yeah, that's a lot to ask considering how long these movies take to get made. But Hardy is a young guy; Mel isn't.

@HeavyMetal4Life - true, well hopefully Miller lives long enough to do both, he is older than Gibson. Surprisingly Gibson is on the younger side of those 80’s action stars, only in his 60’s, most of everyone else is in their 70’s

@dracula - I'd rather see him return as Max himself in a film with an older version of him making his final stand. The Hardy film is just set between that and Thunderdome

Fury Road's an all-timer. Hyped for this.

It'd be nice if Miller can shoot this back-to-back with Mad Max 5. I need more of this universe.

Fury Road was an alright film if you imagine Hardy just plays a guy named Max and not Max Rockatansky. It's Miller's creation though, so I guess he can do with it what he pleases.

That said, I'll check out Furiosa solely to see if ATJ can impress me again. She really came through with The Queens Gambit. Hopefully she can keep it up.

Not that I didn't like Furiosa but I don't see why a prequel for her is necessary. She was a cool character, granted, but I'd much rather have a fifth mainline Mad Max movie.

Am I the only one that thinks this chick looks like Sid from Ice Age? Her eyes are too damn far apart.

As awesome as Fury Road was and how well Hardy did, still think it would be been awesome seeing Mel return

Mad Max Fury Road was a pretty good (but slightly overrated film) I am glad they are following up on it. What I am not glad about is the absence of Charlize Theron and some of the other actors from that film. I think that is a mistake and will make the worlds feel disconnected. The other problem I have with this is the casting of Anya Taylor-Joy who looks nothing like Charlize Theron. There are plenty of other act tresses that at least look like her. I think that an actress like Lucy Fry would make a far more compelling younger version of Theron than Taylor-Joy.

LUCY FRY

But again...Warner Brothers! I am very skeptical about how this turns out!
