Chris McQuarrie Cuts The Fuse On MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5 Production Shut Down Rumors

Chris McQuarrie Cuts The Fuse On MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5 Production Shut Down Rumors

A rumor circulated that Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible 5 had shut down production for a week in order to work out a more perfect finale. Well, director Chris McQuarrie has debunked the rumor.

In a summer full of juggernauts, Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible 5, the follow-up to 2011's blockbuster Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, ranks amongst the biggest of the big, especially after the last film grossed over $694M at the box office. A few weeks ago, Paramount announced, in a welcome decision, that they had shifted the film's release up five months to July 31st in order to take full advantage of the IMAX possibilities in the late summer, similar to how Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy managed to dominate the previous summer.

Earlier today, The Hollywood Reporter released a report claiming Paramount had shut down production on the highly anticipated sequel for a week or so in London because the film's ending had been deemed unsatisfactory. They also claimed that director Christopher McQuarrie had been given a little extra time to work out a new and improved finale alongside a mysterious unnamed writer friend, who would not be paid or credited for the work.

Using anonymous sources, THR claimed McQuarrie was scrambling to come up with an ending, while another one of their sources contradicted the initial claim and said that the film was actually in a good place, but "Chris (McQuarrie), Tom (Cruise), and a third person wanted to take a minute to get from what they thought was a good place to a more perfect place." They added that the studio was not concerned and that the issue was a non-issue likening it to the issues that plagued World War Z's final act before the film went on to be a surprise summer hit.

Well, as it turns out, following a trio of tweets from McQuarrie himself, the issue looks like it really was a non-issue! As in, there was no issue to begin with! McQuarrie has sent out the following three tweets, two of which are directed at THR, from the set of Mission: Impossible 5, more or less confirming that production is still on and should put this rumor to bed. Check the tweets out below:

This makes considerably more sense as it's not uncommon for a film to take a break to prepare what is sure to be an extremely demanding, high-octane action sequence. However, it's always great to see McQuarrie come out and debunk the rumor himself. The rumor was always one that was hard to believe as based on the collective track records of superstar Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie, the chances of something being amiss with their film's finale was very, very slim. Near impossible actually.
