FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot Loses SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Director Jon Watts

The news that Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts would take the helm of Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot was met with open arms by fans. Unfortunately, the filmmaker has decided to move on from the project, with Deadline reporting that Watts is just looking to take a break from superheroes.

He's spent the better part of a decade helping to bring the web-slinger to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Spider-Man: No Way Home was a particularly taxing experience. Shot in the midst of the pandemic, it was one of Marvel Studios' biggest movies yet and required a lot of work.

In a joint statement, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Co-President Louis D'Esposito said, "Collaborating with Jon on the Spider-Man films has been a true pleasure. We were looking forward to continuing our work with him to bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU but understand and are supportive of his reasons for stepping away. We are optimistic that we will have the opportunity to work together again at some point down the road."

In his own statement addressing this news, Watts added: "Making three Spider-Man films was an incredible and life changing experience for me. I’m eternally grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I’m hopeful we’ll work together again and I can’t wait to see the amazing vision for Fantastic Four brought to life."

It's no secret that Sony Pictures hopes to bring Watts back for Spider-Man 4, but it's unclear whether he would be interested. Fantastic Four was never given a release date by Marvel Studios, but with it rumoured to be heading our way in 2024, there's plenty of time to find a new director.

As for Watts, Apple Studios won an auction for a movie he intends to write and direct with George Clooney and Brad Pitt attached to star. He's also said to be in line to direct at least one episode of an upcoming Star Wars TV show previously described as "Stranger Things in space."

Are you disappointed that Watts won't be bringing the Fantastic Four to the MCU?

Great news. Now give it to Peyton Reed

Or better yet, Marvel should repay their debt and give it to Edgar Wright

@Cap1 - Fantastic Four does not belong to Edgar Wright, it belongs to Marvel. So they don’t owe him anything. Edgar Wright is a great director, but he wanted a lot of creative control on a film that’s part of a cinematic universe. Fantastic Four will be no different.

@Cap1 - eh, antman and the wasp was alright, but gives me the impression that the first movie was so good because of edgar wright
Cap1
Cap1 - 4/29/2022, 5:30 PM
@LiteralSense90 - i’m aware a Marvel property belongs to Marvel. They also didn’t go for Wright cos they were far from the cinematic giants they are now then, so were worried his take could jeopardise what they were building. They don’t have that worry anymore

@Cap1 - I don't think he'll want to for the same reason Watts won't. Both of them have directed 3 superhero movies.
Cap1
Cap1 - 4/29/2022, 5:33 PM
@dracula - yeah i’d prefer Wright over Reed. Mainly saying Reed cos of how passionate he sounded about doing it, I can envisage that passion seeping into the film more than it does with Ant-Man

@Cap1 - Edgar Wright is just not a good fit for a large franchise film. Doesn't make him a bad director, but he's not a fit. Both he and Marvel tried to make it work, but at the end both felt it best to part ways.
Cap1
Cap1 - 4/29/2022, 5:35 PM
@MCUKnight11 - based off his comments in the past about doing it, I think he’d jump at the chance. Watts is also more sought after than Reed is
Cap1
Cap1 - 4/29/2022, 5:36 PM
@Itwasme - ur probably right (pardon the pun), but I can dream. Plus, with directors like Raimi, Gunn and Waititi all in the MCU mix, I think the playing field has changed quite a bit since he left Ant-Man, so there’s a better chance now than there was

@Cap1 - "Repay their debt" LMFAO.

Someone doesn't know how things played out.
Cap1
Cap1 - 4/29/2022, 5:52 PM
@Roodi - He wrote a script, Marvel didn't like it, they then wrote another script without his input. As he said himself, he wanted to do a Marvel movie, they didn't want to do an Edgar Wright movie. I'm aware of how it played out as far as it's reported dude, but cheers anyways (not to mention it was a partly tongue-in-cheek remark)

@Cap1 - yes!!

@Cap1 - You are correct that Wright has explicitly said the major issue was that he was taken off as writer while still directing and that zapped the enthusiasm out of it, then when he got the new script (post Wright and Cornish but pre McKay and Rudd-as-writer) and didn't like it, he decided to leave.

However, an article at the time that was right about who did the post-Wrighr draft (they are co-writers on Ant-Man and the Wasp with Rudd) said that Wright's biggest issue was how "bad" Scott Lang would be. In Wright's script, he was a master thief; in the post-Wright script, he was a low level con man; in the final script, he is a thief who only stole from bad people.

Since Feige and Wright became friends again last year, then as long as Wright stays on as writer and he and Marvel agree on the FF's morality, they should be good to go.

I liked NWH, but his previous 2 SM films are low tier MCU for me.

Hopefully they can bring someone with a more distinctive style for visuals.

@kylo0607 - upon rewatching NWH, the first half of the movie is pretty bad. It plays out like a bad episode of the Flash.
