New 52 Wonder Woman Team Give Their Thoughts On Why We Haven't Seen Her On The Big Screen Yet

Writer Brian Azzarello and artist Cliff Chiang sit down with LA Times' Geoff Boucher to discuss their take on the character as well as why they reckon we have yet to see Princess Diana grace the big screen..

Wonder Woman is easily the most well know and arguably popular comic book character not to have a movie based on her exploits. This year marks the character's 70th anniversary and aside from a couple of rumors and half assed hints that doesn't seem any closer to becoming a reality. In the pages og DC's New 52 Bruan Azzarello and Cliff Chiang have been doing a great job with Wonder Woman, while also tweaking her origins a little. In a great, in depth interview with The LA Times' Hero Complex the duo discuss this, but also give their thoughts on why it has taken so long, and what some of the problems may be in adapting Wonder Woman for the screen. Here is an excerpt from the interview..

GB: Superman and Batman are taking flight again on the big screen but Wonder Woman is still waiting her turn. It sort of boggles the mind especially when you consider the fact that Ghost Rider, Swamp Thing, the Punisher and Hellboy each have made it to the screen two or more times. Do you think that speaks to something in the audience or in the creative world? In other words, is it the fact that we don’t want to see a movie bad enough or is it the fact that Hollywood can’t make it good enough?

CC: Wow, that’s a big one. I would say that the audience has wanted different things out of a Wonder Woman movie over the years and that the creative side hasn’t quite figured out the way go. Wonder Woman presents a thorny question: How are you going to show the premier female superhero to the audience in a way that will satisfy that audience? I think now is the time for a Wonder Woman movie. I think it would be great. I think people’s ideas of what a woman can do and the way women heroes can be presented is much broader. You think back to the old TV show, it was pretty campy, but it was the ’70s. The thing is Lynda Carter never made fun of Wonder Woman, which was great and it’s one of the reasons the show really inspired a lot of people to fall in love with Wonder Woman. She did it with a straight face and one of the things we want to do is sort of present this no-nonsense woman warrior. That’s not to say she isn’t compassionate, she’s just ready to get down to business.

BA: I don’t know, they like her on TV. At the theater? I don’t know the answer. I think when people go to comic-book movies they’re going with a preconceived notion of the characters, although I guess “Iron Man” broke that mold. But you go to a Superman movie or a Batman movie and you know who they are. What sold the first Superman movie was the fact that he could fly and the special effects were so great — ‘You’ll believe a man can fly,’ that was the tagline. They are kind of these clear niches where they work, Batman in Gotham City and has seriously creepy villains, Superman is in Metropolis and he fights with the smartest man on Earth. With Wonder Woman, I don’t think people know what they would get out of that right now. Lyle Waggoner as Steve Trevor?

Bottom line is, after that failed tv show WB are going to be even more cautious about a Wonder Woman flick. There is no doubt that the character poses a bigger problem for screen adaptation than many others, but if the right director and writers are found it could be really great I think. Drive director Nicholas Winding Refn has been VERY vocal about his desire to make a WW movie. but as much as I admire his talent he has admitted not knowing very much about the character's comic book history. What do you guys think? Who is the right man/woman to finally bring this character to our screens?

Wonder Woman should come soon, and I believe she will. Just approach it like Thor and it will be awesome! Diana Prince deserves a movie! And MAKE FLASH COME!!!! DC has some of the greatest superheroes of all time, and they need to come now!!

Oh and whoever's penciling Wonder Woman's new 52 book sucks. Lazy half assed art. Batwing > Wonder Woman.

WB doesn't think a female hero can carry her own movie, even Wonder Woman. It's that simple, and maybe even true. The problem is that she's the only recognizable thing from her own verse. What Warners should probably do is borrow one of Batman's villains to borrow some of that cred. Let a sequel tackle her own rogues.

PartyHard- Of course everyone has their own tastes. Some people love John Romita Jr.'s art. I can't stand it, personally. I like clean lines and shiny colors. I find the art in WW to be very sketchy/unpolished as if the artist hadn't sharpened his pencil once. And i find the colors to be really flat. Of all the new 52 books, Batwing has what i would call the best art so far.

@Alucard...Gemma is GREAT I love her...
I think with training she could pull off Wondy. But, she is better for Lara Croft to be honest.
I want Julia Voth ;)

a Wonder Woman movie is not fricking hard to make if they can have fantasy mixed with reality work on film i.e. Thor and Harry Potter they can do it with Wonder Woman.

These guy's are right! They DO need to be very careful.
You can take this character in many different directions, and whatever that direction is, it most likely will define her for future projects. Some directions:
1) '300'
2) A love story
3) Full blown action/fantasy like the 'Pirates' movies.
4) Greek mythology
5) Cookie-cutter 'hero' movie.
6) Cliched feminist empowerment yarn.
7) Prelude to a tie-in for a 'Justice League' movie.
8) A family based drama/ origin story
9) A survival film where Paradise Island is threatened by the 'outside world' and now have to defend it.
10) A combination of 1-9.
DON'T SCREW THIS UP DC/WARNERS!!!

if u going to do a Wonder Woman movie the costume should be like a proper Greek warrior costume and not the silly stripper costume like the comic book.

@kashchei2003

that look sick the costume is from Xena i bet :P

@alucard365- Me too. It's just that I know how these Hollywood guy's in project development sessions think. This probably will be on the table, especially after 'The Avenger's' takes CBM's to a whole nutha' level.
soaponapope
soaponapope - 11/4/2011, 2:08 PM
its not about the costume, the reason nobody can make a good wonder woman movie is because they don't know how to portray the amazons. they are supposed to be this society who are trained from birth to be warriors. yeah they are this island of hot women, but their first answer to everything is the sword. they are sophisticated, but also inherently violent, but not barbaric. juxtaposing that attitude in our society, that sees heroes as people who try and show us that violence is not the way, with a hero whose philosophy is the complete opposite and who was trained to be a warrior and killing machine from birth, is a big part of who she is and none of these hollywood screenwriters get that.

@alucard...She isn't a television actress actually.
She is a model and upcoming actress. Watch her in B*tch Slap...The movie is not great, but she is! She plays the main character.
She has been in a few TV guest spots, but that is it. I want someone unknown.

@MrEko

the only thing that came close to Wonder Woman tv show/movie was Xena Warrior Princess lol. i always hated that stupid Wonder Woman costume i dont care its Wonder Woman history in the comics its just a silly stripper costume. the villains like Ares or Hades in a Wonder Woman movie would work.

@marvel72

whats that taking a risk or just WB did not care about these character. Jonah Hex should of been like True Grit imo. i mean how hard to make a serious western out of Jonah Hex. WB just dumb down the character and film so bad.

Green Lantern well that character it self was a big campy and silly they should of reinvented the character to work on film.
mgeoff88
mgeoff88 - 11/4/2011, 3:35 PM
I think DC was getting ready to use their other well known superheroes, such as Flash, Green Arrow, and Wonder Woman. But when the Green Lantern movie failed, it kind of throw a wrench into their plans. There was a lot riding on the Green Lantern movie because DC was ready to take more risks by using other characters from the DC Universe, but they were also testing the waters, as it were, to see how a non-flagship(Superman and Batman) character would fair.

Wonder Woman is a hard character to bring onto the big screen, and on top of that, DC is probably going by the history of solo female superheroes movies that have all been critically panned and didn't do very well at the box office either, which is a shame.

I think DC and Marvel need to let the past be the past and put the same amount of effort they put into movies for male superheroes like Iron Man, Hulk, Batman, Spider-Man etc, for female superhero movies. And speaking on the Wonder Woman movie, I say Bridget Regan, Tanit Phoenix, Erin Cummings or Megan Gale, for WW.

@Froggy Nice picture! I've seen her in LEEE's fan cast, and I just couldn't see her as WW, but that photo manip has me thinking otherwise.

what about Abbie Cornish she was good in Sucker Punch

marvel72
marvel72 - 11/4/2011, 3:45 PM
@ jazzman

maybe abit of both,jonah hex should of had a true grit feel to it but personally i don't know why dc chose jonah hex over say wonder woman or the flash.

as for the green lantern,i've only been reading since rebirth so i wouldn't class him as campy maybe in the early days.

i think biggest problem with the green lantern film was the script,editing & a few of the characters i.e blake lively & hal's mate with the glasses.

sort out that shit & i think it would of worked.

First of all, that animated movie may have had it's moments but it was extremely flawed! I could write an entire article about what I didn't like about it. Thor did well. It's a very similar story. Swap out Asgard for Olympus. The Immortals is how I always pictured a WW movie. The Gods can take any form they choose. They can look like us. Just have Diana come to our world to find and defeat Ares and his sons. Get a good supporting cast like Jane Lynch as Julia Kapatelis and Lynda as Hyppolyta! What's so difficult about it? She is the female Superman to an extent. She needs to be FLYING and lifting trains and such. Damn, I wish I could write the [frick]ing thing!!!

@marvel72

i agree Jonah Hex over Wonder Womanwas just stupid by WB. Green Lantern silly abit campy and silly a guy who uses a ring and create silly things out of green energy. i remember telling some people and they find the character abit silly. plus casting Ryan Reynold was not a good idea also i know he did alright job but people rather want to see a unknown actor for the role. also why the f**k WB hire blake lively jeez

@rbfn04....It is called working out, correct dieting, and Hollywood magic. It is not hard.
Look at Chris Hemsworth and Henry Cavill...they weren't huge at first, and now look at how big they are. Women are just a capable to get in the correct shape.

For pete's sake, the problem is the guys in charge! Boot them out of the head honcho positions, put in people who want the movie to happen, it'll get made! THAT's the key to getting a Wonder Woman movie out there!
