EDITORIAL: TIME FOR CGI cinema to take over live action failures

WHY THE NEW TRAILER FOR MASS EFFECT 3 - HAS ME CONVINCED THAT THE TIME HAS COME FOR CGI ACTION MOVIES TO HAVE ANOTHER GO.

During "The Walking Dead" a trailer for Mass Effect 3 was shown in a commercial break. I've never played any of the Mass Effect games, mostly due to having a PS3 (I know 2 is on that console now), but the visuals and cinematics were phenomenal. So much so that I will probably get 2 and 3.

Today in gaming most cinematics are great. For example look at the Final Fantasy series (pretty much the CGI cinema pioneers). I remember playing TEKKEN just to see the movie sequences 15 years ago..or so. These types of cut scenes are now common place in just about every game made for consoles and computers. Environments, facial expressions, colors, textures, all amazingly real and tangible. They bring a "reality" to the fantastical that goes beyond, 2D page art, or run of the mill "cartoon animation".

In 2001 Square spent an estimated $137M on Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. The movie grossed just over $85M worldwide. This was not due to poor or less than stellar CGI animation (especially for 2001), instead the script was too far removed from any recognizable FF franchise game.
Here is the Trailer for FF: Spirits Within - a bit dated but still hold up.

NOW it's 2012 - Just imagine what $137M can do now. To Paraphrase George Lucas, the technology has caught up to the medium and has become cheaper to work with. How much better would the FF movie look with that budget if made today? What about other Comic, Game, or Anime properties that just can't be made into live action films for whatever reason?

For example: Dragon Ball Z - DB: Evolution was pretty bad even for a fan, but what if they took all that was great in manga/anime and rendered it in a CGI cinematic film? Or Justice League (DCUO - a little crude but good), Bleach, Transformers, Another FF film?

Here is DCUO trailer

To be clear, I'm certainly not talking about a Disney Pixar type film, Frankly "capcom" quality CGI (IMO they are the worst) I mean fully rendered cinematic movies that allow a creative team the ability to make a movie that does justice to and honors the source material. Scenes, action, characters, powers, etc...can be shown as they are meant to be, and be fully believable.

Here is Mass Effect 3

I would love to see anime Goku come to life in in 3D CGI in a quality that is Mass Effect 3 or other similar games. I think it's time. Lets stop make crap like Ghost Rider and DB:E, and put these guys where they belong in a way that fits the story and character.

We have the technology, we can rebuild it, make it stronger, faster, better.

I don't want to sound like a dick but a $137 million is still alot especially during these times, when you know the worlds economically [frick]ed, if you haven't noticed none of the studios want to take risks, look at WB they have been on axing rampage of late. By the way I am not saying I don't agree with you, because I do but I highly doubt its going happen maybe some point in the future when things are slightly better.

My point was more of a "what if?" Today "big budget movies" are $150M to $300M GR:SoV was est. $75M

I think it's viable today as long as correct stories and tie-ins are made...like DC and Marvel - game studios could make 45min - hour+ movies and put them directly to DVD.

Larger budgets go to the big screen. It certainly beats 75million for a movie that may not make that money back.

granted I also recognize that many of these ventures are geared towards a specific audience...but here's to wishing.

one Final thing...movies still get made and they get made for a lot of Money...I don't think the "economic argument" holds water any more, especially when i'm just suggesting the type of presentation/media be better suited for the content. Right tool for the job type thing.

mass effect 3 trailer looked f*ckin excellent, always been a fan of star wars cgi intro/cut scenes.

wouldn't mind seeing some cgi cinema, but i don't want it to completely replace live action.

there is room for both.

I have been saying for a long time that the only way to do a great JLA movie is to go CGI. DO IT!

I dont think we'll get films like these cinematics. We do however get the Polar express, A christmas carol, Beowulf and Tin Tins of this world. Would be nice to have a straight up action film in mo cap.

Never gonna happen, buddy... yeah, fanboys would love it, but the general audience, at least stateside doesn't take cartoons seriously . No matter how good it looks, an all cgi movie is just a cartoon. sure shrek and toy story are blockbusters, but they are for kids and not serious at all. Action movies are about spectacle. The action is supposed to be amazing. Example, transformers would not have been impressinve with out the the "real world" elements. They were with real people, on real streets in a real city which made it super cool that the robots looked so real...

@MoonDoggyX

i disagree. Like all movies, it just needs a great script. I think more superhero movies should be CGI as many comic elements don't work otherwise onscreen--which is why many (most) CBMs struggle.

A good movie is every bit as much about visual presentation as it is about story. Maybe even a little bit more. Cgi cartoons just don't have the visual impact that live action does. An all cgi hulk ripping a car in half would not be as impressive as cgi hulk doing the same thing in a live action movie because the live action gives us reference to normality. That way when we see something that normally happen in the real world, its special.

@MoondoggyX I agree that live action has it's place...like the Hulk or Transformers, Batman, Iron Man etc...

However, some things just can't be done...that's why they are done in Anime, games, or just comics.

I think CG Cinematics has come far enough to be the right media to present some of the "cartoon" characters as you put it, in a more realistic setting, higher quality setting.

TMNT tried this several years ago...I thought thye did pretty well but still lacked something...oh yeah good story and direction. But then again we look at GL, Ghost Rider, Electra, Wolverine, DB:E.

Live ACtion is limited, and when we try to push past the limits as is generally done in Comics and Anime, it looks hooky and bad. ANSWER: CG Cinema. Whether it's a feature length move (90-120min) or a DVD release size (45-70mins) It's an untapped medium that I think would take off, now that technology has come as far as it has.
