Doing the rounds to promote the upcoming release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Chris Pratt explains why he didn't copy the video game Mario, but also proves he was more than capable of doing so if asked!

Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt is a Hollywood A-Lister and, on the surface, an ideal choice to bring Mario to life in Universal Pictures and Illumination's The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Alas, it's become clear the vast majority of gamers don't agree and Pratt has been coming under fire from the start. For those to hear the classic Mario voice in this movie, the actor putting his own Brooklyn-inspired spin on the plumber has resulted in a lot of upset Mushroom Kingdom enthusiasts.

It's easy to understand why as, on the surface, it appears to be another example of Hollywood casting a big name without respecting the source material. However, if what we've heard in the trailers is any indication, Pratt has nailed the catchphrases and is adding at least some of that familiar flair to the iconic character.

During a recent appearance on the BBC One Show (via Toonado.com), Pratt shed some light on why he didn't try to emulate the classic Mario voice but proved he would have been able to do so if asked!

"We were trying to find a way to put that into the movie, but in a way that would be congruent with a storyline," he said before Luigi actor Charlie Day chimed in by adding, "Yeah you can't say 'Itsa me' for 90 minutes." Pratt, however, would go on to perform those lines in that classic video game style and has since received praise from fans for doing so.

Still, we appreciate where both he and Day are coming from as what works in a game won't necessarily translate well to a 90-minute movie.

From Nintendo and Illumination comes a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go!, Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru), the film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Jack Black as Bowser, as Toad, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to be released in theaters on April 5, 2023.

He didn’t really prove anything. Most people can say “Let’s a go” and “It’s a me” with that inflection and sound. Not knocking him btw. But I will say that in the first trailer, he sounded kinda like Bradley Cooper doing Rocket. I’m excited for this movie either way. Probably gonna take my niece to it.

@PatientXero - was thinking the same thing. Everybody can say "its-a me" like that.

@bkmeijer1 - I think the most important thing was he pointed out that no one actually wants to listen to an entire movie where the main character talks in that high-pitched shrill.

bkmeijer1 - 3/22/2023, 4:45 AM
@MattIsForReal - for sure. It's just that he didn't really prove he could if it were the case. But indeed, he doesn't have to a high-pitch anyway

Y’know, despite only being in my very early 20s, the Captain Lou Mario from the Super Show was my first introduction to a full-on voiced Mario (though my introduction to the franchise was Paper Mario and the Thousand-Year Door), and while I love Charles Martinet, I think me growing up with that as my Mario voice is the reason I don’t mind Pratt more Brooklyn Everyman angle.

@kRAVENkIaw - This is true. I grew up with Lou Albino as Mario alongside the classic DIC cartoons... as well as Bob Hoskins from the 1993 movie. The N64 voice was cute and fun but that was afterwards... Mario had a real Brooklyn accent before it.

A lot of people forget, Mario being from Brooklyn was very much the canon story, up until Yoshi’s Island. I personally think the Brooklyn origin makes for a better story. Never liked him and Luigi being raised in the Mushroom Kingdom.

I just love the fact he's an outspoken Christian. Feels good to see a guy like that win. He seems like a really good dude. God bless him.

The article is pretty old, and all the example pics and gifs are missing, but you can still know how to do it if you follow the instructions. It's been a long time since I made one, but this article is always helpful.

Honestly I think he'll be a great Mario and he's right, the original high pitched voice wouldn't work for actual dialogue.

Now we just need a Crash Bandicoot movie and the 90s/2000s Sega, Nintendo, Sony Trinity can be complete

Oh shit, toss in a Spyro movie too

Oh and Skies of Arcadia because it was the Greatest Dreamcast Game

Getting over the voice was a no-thought for me. It's not like the legacy of the haracter is all of a sudden erased and tarnished. It's just a movie, and it looks darn fun.

Is anyone really going to pay big money to see this in a theater????

I had fun playing Donkey Kong when it was new in arcades, but ????????

Luckily my Grandweasels are too old to drag me to crap like this.

@DocSpock - as a life long Nintendo fan, I will be. Also Mario games sell like hot cakes

Mario kart 8 on switch has sold 52 milion copies

Mario odessy has sold 23 million copies

The old plumber is still very popular.

"Yeah you can't say 'Itsa me' for 90 minutes"

That's exactly right. Not just annoying for the voice-actor, but also for the audience I think. Taking a more everyday man sound, like Pratt, might just work better.

Seth Rogans voice really doesnt match Donkey Kong. I dont think he even talked in the games
Mrcool210
Mrcool210 - 3/21/2023, 5:59 AM
@Matchesz - He didn't. The only place I can think where he talked was the donkey Kong country cartoon. And Rogen definitely doesn't sound like this guy.
