Guillermo del Toro is set to follow up his Academy Award-nominated Pinocchio adaptation with another stop-motion animated tale.
Deadline reports that the Hellboy director is developing an adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning British writer Kazuo Ishiguro's fantasy novel, The Buried Giant.
The story focuses on "an elderly Briton couple, Axl and Beatrice, living in a fictional post-Arthurian England in which no one is able to retain long-term memories. After dimly recalling that they might years earlier have had a son, the couple decide to travel to a neighbouring village to seek him out."
The Buried Giant was nominated for the 2016 World Fantasy Award for best novel, and the 2016 Mythopoeic Award for Adult Literature. It also placed sixth in the 2016 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel.
Del Toro will produce as well as direct, and is also co-writing the script with Matilda the Musical scribe Dennis Kelly.
"Guillermo del Toro is a visionary filmmaker and master of his craft,” said Netflix Film Chairman Scott Stuber. “We couldn’t be more proud of the prestigious recognition for his Pinocchio, and we’re pleased to continue our creative partnership as he develops his next project with Netflix.”
“The Buried Giant continues my animation partnership with Netflix and our pursuit of stop-motion as a medium to tell complex stories and build limitless worlds," added del Toro. "It is a great honor and greater responsibility for me to direct this screenplay which Dennis Kelly and I are adapting from Kazuo Ishiguro’s profound and imaginative novel.”
No other details were provided, and it'll probably be a while before we get any solid updates.
