DETECTIVE PIKACHU Topples TOMB RAIDER To Become The Highest-Grossing Video Game Movie Of All Time

Congratulation are in order, as Pokemon Detective Pikachu has now surpassed Angelina Jolie's 2001 Tomb Raider adaptation to become the highest-grossing video game movie of all time. More past the jump...

Pokemon Detective Pikachu can now lay claim to being the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, along with the best-reviewed.

With a current worldwide haul of $412 million, Ryan Reynolds' diminutive detective has zapped 2001's Tomb Raider ($357M) starring Angelia Jolie out of the way to become the final boss of big-screen video game movies. Will Sonic the Hedgehog have anything to say about that next February? Unless it surprises a lot of people by being not terrible, we doubt it!

There's a sequel to Detective Pikachu in the works with Sonic writer Oren Uziel penning the script, but no release date has been set.

Tell us, do you think the first live-action Pokemon movie deserves its spot as the highest-grossing video game movie? Sound off in the comments.

Movie was great and had a lot of heart. I can't believe they pulled it off.

@MexCowboyNation - It didn't. World of Warcraft made 433.7 million worldwide and Rampage made 428 million.

@TanukiTrooper - I believe this is for USA domestic gross. If adjusted for inflation Tomb Raider was the #1 highest grossing video game adaptation.

@Mrcool210 - we have no context for story or how much was studio interference, changes made by director, or improv on the part of the actors. Relax.

@Mrcool210 - Uziel is also on board to write the Supergirl movie for DC/WB.

That deserves an equal

It's so weird how movies based on superhero comics dominate the box office and somehow video game movies have yet to find a way to truly compete. I mean, this is a movie based on (a spin-off of) one of the most popular media properties of modern times, it's beating an almost 20 year old record, and it's still only #276 in the all-time worldwide box office ranking right now.

I'm starting to have real trouble imagining which game adaptation will be able to play in the big big leagues at the BO. I'm fairly sure, though, that it won't be Sonic.

Oh, wait, WarCraft should be higher worldwide thanks to China.

@Kyos - it will be pokemon, with a sequel, mark my words

@Kyos - well games are designed for playing first rather than engaging stories. Even in story heavy games the devs make concessions with the story for the sake of better gameplay. So the source material being pulled from is already requiring major creativity while still needing to prove itself like superhero movies needed to.

Cool. A lot of people(including myself) thought this was gonna blow up past a billion. Crazy.

@Roodi - I thougt the same, i think the problem was that china didnt respond as expected and in EEUU always dislike movies that are not from theyre culture...
But the movie was great and plant a way, a GOOD sequel will hit the billion

While I haven’t seen it myself, I bought into the hype and thought it was going to be bigger than it was.

Congrats because it deserves it. The movie ended up surprising me in more than one way and with enough heart in it as well.

@HeavyMetal4Life - People severely overestimated the general audience's interest in it.

I got excited for a minute there when I misread the headline as “DETECTIVE PIKACHU Topless”...
