Like every Marvel Studios movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opened strong with $120 million over the four-day Presidents' Day weekend, but negative reviews and a low CinemaScore had us wondering if Peyton Reed's threequel would be able to maintain its momentum.
Well, the latest box office updates are in, and it's not looking good for Marvel's first Phase 5 film.
According to THR, Quantumania is expected to drop 71.6 percent to $30 million-plus over the course of its second weekend on general release. If these projections prove accurate, Ant-Man 3 is in danger of suffering the worst second-weekend decline ever for a Hollywood superhero film that opened to $100 million or more at the domestic box office.
Universal’s Cocaine Bear actually beat Ant-Man 3 on Friday with $8.7 million versus $8.3 million.
Major studio blockbusters often prove to be somewhat critic proof, but that hasn't been the case for the MCU. Eternals was the first movie in the franchise to drop to "rotten" status on Rotten Tomatoes, and underperformed. Quantumania became the second, and looks likely to follow suit.
What do you guys make of this development? Did you anticipate Quantumania taking this big a hit at the box office, or do you think it deserves more success? Drop us a comment down below.
Super-Hero partners Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) return to continue their adventures as Ant-Man and the Wasp. Together, with Hope’s parents Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and Scott’s daughter Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), the family finds themselves exploring the Quantum Realm, interacting with strange new creatures and embarking on an adventure that will push them beyond the limits of what they thought possible.
